The past two weeks have been nail-biting and exhilarating - 30 finalists from across the African continent, have been battling it out for the best song in Africa, during the 2020 edition of the AfriMusic Song Contest. The much-awaited moment to announce which songwriter takes the coveted title has arrived AND the winner of the 2020 AfriMusic Song Contest is Dhortune ThatOndoBoy representing Nigeria with the song Yèmi, who led the contest in the finals with an astounding 315,314 public votes.

This year's competition was the hardest one yet, with entries from 29 African countries and 113 songs competing in the National Selections - 30 best from which have qualified to the Grand Final. Voting for the best song, was indeed a challenge, with so much talent that Africa had to offer. This year's final results were so close, and for the first time in its history the contest had numerous tiebacks in both selection phases. The winner of the AfriMusic Song Contest is selected by a positional voting process. Each contestant receives two sets of points, one set from the judges panel and another from the public voting. Points are combined and divided 50/50 between judges and public votes. The song with the highest number of combined points wins. In the case of tie-backs, the song receiving the highest points from the public vote is the winner. In fact, in this year's final only one song managed to score points from both public and jury.

"This year saw the two top contenders, both representing Nigeria. Dhortune lead with the public votes, while Zinny lead with the judge's votes. Following in similar format to that of the Eurovision Song Contest voting rules, should finalists combined scores result in a tie for the title, the finalist with the highest number of public votes, will be declared the winner. Following the tightest and closest results during the National Selections, the decision across the AfriMusic executive board was unanimous, there can only be one winner and the same rules for the finals, as with the Eurovision Song contest should apply. This resulted in Zinny taking second place, with quite a big difference in public votes received, to that of Dhortune. We have seen an amazing global reach, where votes from countries such as, Brazil, Mexico, America, Canada, Australia, Russia, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Sweden, France and many more, were received in supported their favourite AfriMusic contestant. Dhortune was a well deserving contestant from the start, as we saw how his fans and public got behind him in support. His ability to market himself alongside all the promotion AfriMusic were doing, was quite remarkable. This shows the power of social media and digital communication today", said Suzie Vicente, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the AfriMusic Song Contest.

A fast-rising Nigerian artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and a performing and recording artist, Olamidotun Richard Oluwatimilehin popularly known as Dhortune ThatOndoBoy (Iam dhortune) is sure to have an impact on music fans from all over the world. His musical style is a fusion of contemporary Afro-Highlife with a modern tune, his songs also promotes the Ondo-Yoruba African culture. He has written songs for several artists in the music industry and is currently working on his debut album scheduled to be released this year. "Yemi" is a soulful piece, beautifully made to eulogize the efforts, sacrifices and the unconditional love of our mothers. It speaks of a child who seeks to make his mum proud for all she did for him right from the time he was conceived to his adulthood.

"The love of this project grows with each year. To see our slogan “Connecting Africa through Song” come to life, is truly a remarkable thing to witness. The beauty of this project, is that the whole AfriMusic team, has a sense of getting to know these contestants on a one to one basis, as the team witnesses their musical journeys progress, even far beyond the announcement of the winner. To see how fellow contestants support each other, connect and at times even collaborate, is the true purpose of this platform, amongst taking their music internationally. This year has been no exception, despite the global restraints the world is currently facing, with the Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly Eurovision 2020 has been cancelled, along other major events around the world, so plans for AfriMusic in 2020 have be halted. We have a few other announcements to make in the coming weeks, despite the global lockdown and we look forward to sharing them with our fans and partners soon." said Michelle Fernandes, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of the AfriMusic Song Contest.

Best English Lyrics, presented by Andy Mikheev, editor-in-chief of ESCKAZ.com: Nigeria - Zinny - Little Girls Grow

"We are living at a time for new role models for the little girls. Millennial teenagers, including Greta Thunberg, Malala Yousafzai, Emma Gonzalez and many others all around the planet are having a global impact and indeed are changing our world. Today's kids are intelligent, environmentally-conscious, politically-active, and socially-sensitive. While they grew up being told what to be, now they want to find their own way and to write their own story, as Zinny's lyrics brilliantly put it. It is really a great type of a topic to reflect in Afrimusic entry"

Best French Lyrics, presented by Nisay Samreth of Eurovision-fr.net: Burundi: Miss Erica ft. Sat-B - In My Heart
Best African Song, presented by Nisay Samreth of Eurovision-fr.net: Tunisia: Mathcima - Samra

BUZZ award, presented by Roy van der Merwe, ESCCovers editor-in-chief: Burundi: Miss Erica ft. Sat-B Satlight KING - In My Heart

"Times are changing and SOCIAL MEDIA has become such a big part of life in all spheres, that we thought an award recognizing the role of social media is something important in music competitions. Based on the data provided by the organizers, we have published articles on all 30 finalists in the 3rd edition of Afrimusic song contest on the combined Eurovision Coverage facebook. Although some posts appeared sooner than others, we took into account aspects such a performance of the post within 24 hours since it was published, shares, likes, comments, views and other interactions. The post on Miss Erica of Burundi got almost more interaction than all other 29 finalists combined. It was crystal clear to us that Miss Erica knows how to make the most of social media"

Just like at Eurovision, the qualifiers will be announced in a random order, with detailed results to be released following the Final.

The same voting system will be applied to compile the results for the Grand Final of Eurostream 2020, to be held on Saturday 9 May, at 21:00 CET. The twenty qualifiers from the Semi-Finals will be joined by the countries of the Big 5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom) and the 2020 host country, The Netherlands, who are already pre-qualified for the Grand Final.

The entrants for the first and second edition of the contest, have branded the AfriMusic Song Contest as Africa's most thrilling music competition platform, reaching all 54 countries in Africa. There is no doubt that Africa's songwriters will continue to share African sound globally and make their mark abroad.

On March 18th, the Eurovision Song Contest announced the cancellation of their event in Rotterdam, The Netherlands expected to have taken place in May 2020, due to the Covid-19 Global Pandemic. "All events around the globe have been heavily affected by this devasting pandemic, which has caused disruption to all walks of life, no matter what continent you live in. Due to the severity of the virus, the AfriMusic Exco continue to closely monitor the situation and have encouraged all our contestants to adhere to the advice and guidance provided by the World Health Organization and Government guidelines applied in their respective countries. The contest has not been affected due to its digital presence, but the overall prize to fly the 2020 AfriMusic Song Contest Winner to Rotterdam in May, has most unfortunately been impacted. Alternative measures are currently being explored and an international opportunity for the overall winner will be announced, as soon as global normality resumes. During a time of universal uncertainty, our utmost priority is focused on the health and safety of our contestants, staff, AfriMusic and EuroVision community. We wish to extend well wishes to all that have been affected by this pandemic in Africa and extend a mammoth thank you to the health workers and other front-line workers keeping resources," said Suzie Vicente, forming Founder and Co-CEO of the AfriMusic Song Contest.

Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam is cancelled. It is with deep regret that EBU has to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam. Here is the full statement:

Over the past few weeks, we have explored many alternative options to allow the Eurovision Song Contest to go ahead. However, the uncertainty created by the spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe – and the restrictions put in place by the governments of the participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities - means the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has taken the difficult decision to not continue with the live event as planned. The health of artists, staff, fans and visitors, as well as the situation in the Netherlands, Europe and the world, is at the heart of this decision. We are very proud that the Eurovision Song Contest has united audiences every year, without interruption, for the past 64 years and we, like the millions of you around the world, are extremely saddened that it can not take place in May.

Jon Ola Sand, Executive Supervisor: "We are very proud of the Eurovision Song Contest, that for 64 years has united people all around Europe. And we are deeply disappointed about this situation. The EBU, together with the Host Broadcaster NPO, NOS, AVROTROS and the City of Rotterdam will continue to talk to see if it's possible to stage the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam in 2021. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the process of staging a great Eurovision Song Contest this year. Unfortunately, that was not possible due to factors beyond our control. We regret this situation very much, but I can promise you: the Eurovision Song Contest will come back stronger than ever."

NPO chairwoman Shula Rijxman: "This decision by the EBU was inevitable, given the circumstances currently affecting all of Europe as a result of the coronavirus and all the measures that governments must now take. This is a big disappointment for the Dutch audience, the fantastic team behind the scenes, the presenters and the artists. In recent months, a large group of people have worked hard on the Song Contest. We thank them for their great commitment and regret that the results of the efforts will not be visible in the short term. We would particularly like to mention the municipality of Rotterdam, which has proven itself as the ideal partner in this project in the past year. This edition was an excellent opportunity to understand each other differently in a period of uncertainty in Europe, but above all an opportunity to really bring Europe together. Music is universally binding and - I am sure - it will stay that way. Even after this corona crisis."

Sietse Bakker, Executive Producer Event, understands that many people are disappointed that the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will not take place: "For the artists from 41 participating countries, our opening and interval acts that put their hearts and souls into their performance. For the fans who have always supported us and have kept confidence until the last moment. And not least, for the fantastic team, which has worked very hard in recent months to make this 65th edition a great success. We understand and share that disappointment. Some perspective is appropriate because, at the same time, we also realize that this decision and its consequences don’t compare to the challenges faced by people affected, directly or indirectly, by the coronavirus and the difficult but necessary measures."

We ask some patience as we work through the ramifications of this unprecedented decision and patiently await further news in the coming days and weeks. During that time, we would like to pay tribute to all the Host Broadcaster team in the Netherlands and our 41 public service broadcasters who have worked so hard planning this year’s event. We are all heartbroken that the Eurovision Song Contest will not be able to be staged in May but feel confident that the whole Eurovision family, across the world, will continue to provide love and support for each other at this difficult time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you cancelling the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam?
With the escalating spread of COVID-19 throughout Europe – and the restrictions put in place by the governments of participating broadcasters and the Dutch authorities - it is impossible to continue with the live event as planned.

Why not postpone the event?
The current situation across Europe is likely to remain uncertain for the coming months and at this stage we cannot guarantee we would be able to stage an event of this size with this many stakeholders later this year. A Contest later in the year would also reduce the amount of time the winning broadcaster would have to prepare for the following year’s competition.

Could you not have held the contest without an audience?
We are carefully following the advice of the relevant authorities to protect the health and wellbeing of all citizens. Dutch restrictions on gatherings of large numbers of people and international travel restrictions mean that holding the event, even without an audience, is impossible at this time.

Why couldn’t you have held the show remotely?
It’s in the DNA of the Eurovision Song Contest to bring delegations, artists and fans together in one place and provide an equal platform for all artists to compete together on the same stage and the same opportunity to shine. We felt that under the extreme circumstances we face this year, organizing the Eurovision Song Contest in another way would not be in keeping with our values and the tradition of the event. The unique format of the Song Contest as an international live event means that it is not possible to identify any realistic alternative. We therefore have no choice other than to cancel the show.

Will the selected artists be able to perform their songs next year?
This is to be discussed with the Reference Group and the participating broadcasters and a decision will be communicated later.

What will happen to my ticket?
You will be informed about this as soon as possible. Among other things, we will look at whether the buyers will get their money back or whether the tickets will remain valid until next year. As soon as there is more clarity, ticket buyers will receive an email with their various options at the email address from which they purchased their tickets.

Can I get a refund now?
At the moment we are looking into the various options. As soon as we have more information, this will be communicated on songfestival.nl.

What happens to my tickets that I bought on Ticketswap, via AVROTROS, or via the fan club (OGAE)?
The same applies here as for "regular" ticket buyers. As soon as we have more information, this will be communicated on songfestival.nl and you will receive an email at the email address from which you booked the tickets.

Do we have a date for next year’s Contest?
The EBU, NPO, NOS, AVROTROS and the City of Rotterdam are continuing their conversation regarding the potential hosting of the Contest in 2021. It is currently too early to discuss any specifics regarding the event next year.

Should broadcasters be allowed to submit same entries as were supposed for the Eurovision 2020 for the Eurovision 2021? Write in other suggestions.

This year is the European Broadcasting Union's (EBU) 70th anniversary and to mark the occasion, EBU is searching for inspired interpretations of Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum - a captivating piece of music composed in the 17th century which is also the Eurovision anthem. Play it on spoons, do it as rap, folk, opera, grime or drum 'n' bass. Go solo, improvise a choir, go vocal, local or global - it's your call. Above all, be creative, be different, be daring. EBU is looking for entries that reflect the EBU’s public service values of universality, diversity, excellence and innovation – so the scope is endless.

For inspiration, listen to Charpentier's original version and find a version of the anthem re-worked by a yodeller, accompanied by Swiss alphorn and accordion!

What you need to do and when:
Entries must be posted on Instagram in the form of a video (60 seconds or less), between 12 February and 1 April 2020, using hashtag #EBU70contest and tagging @ebu_hq
The winning entry will be selected towards the end of April. The contest is open to over-18s only – check the rules first.

The prize for the winning entry:
Two tickets to the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam
Hotel accommodation on the night of the Grand Final (16 May 2020)
Reimbursement up to CHF 800 for travel expenses (including two flights within Europe)

Noel Curran, Director-General, EBU, "Public service media delivers value for millions of people with dynamic, informative and entertaining content. But, for our 70th anniversary, we're handing the creative baton to our audiences – some of the most innovative and diverse in the world. This is a landmark year for the EBU – in 70 years we’ve seen huge advances in technology, platforms, programming and services and will continue to do so – but creativity was, is and will always be central to what we deliver. We can’t wait to see how the public interpret this special musical challenge."

Romania will be represented at ESC 2020, in Rotterdam, by Roxen, a complex artist with a dreamy sound and a rich, profound, unique voice.

Roxen, like many other young people, is concerned with the environmental threats and believes that we need to respect more the planet we live on. She cares deeply about nature and wishes to preserve it for future generations. "I believe we are all interconnected. In the end, every flower is a soul blossoming in nature. We should all allow ourselves to blossom." She is also passionate about other artistic fields: painting, acting, writing and dance. Roxen finds relaxation in meditating and travelling.

In the beginning, she felt she belonged on stage. To this day, each of her musical experiences is the beginning of a journey into another dimension. Roxen's musical aura is a spell virtually creating a whole new world. A world where people don't reduce life to black and white. A world where people are able to see rainbows. Over the years, Roxen went through challenging moments, but managed to overcome them through ambition and perseverance. Those qualities also enhanced her artistic approach in fighting for her dreams and reaching the top of musical charts.

Roxen, a surprising young artist, was born in Cluj - a major Romanian city - and started singing when she was only 7 years old. She won several musical competitions and knew from the very beginning that music meant everything to her. "As a child, I participated in various competitions and festivals. I have always dreamed of making high quality music, performing on the most important stages and in front of the largest audiences. Now I an just so excited, I feel I am facing the biggest test in my career, totally out of my comfort zone. I love the feeling, as I have always been attracted to new experiences, to all the challenges in my life. I am happy and grateful for this opportunity. At the moment, all my energy and focus go towards Eurovision – I want to do my best for this!", Roxen confessed.

Currently, Roxen has 2 songs in the Romanian radio charts tops: "You don't love me" and "Ce-ti canta dragostea", both played in heavy rotation on the most relevant national stations. According to Media Forest weekly charts, Roxen is the 3rd most played artist on Romanian radio stations. Her video for "You don't love me" feat. Sickotoy has a hypnotic quality, creating a unique universe of clubbing and nightlife. Just a few weeks after the release, the song was included in the playlists of the most relevant radio stations in countries such as France, Mexico, U.S., Spain, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Kosovo, Slovenia, Kazakhstan, Estonia and Moldova with almost 8 million views on YouTube. The music video for "Ce-ti canta dragostea" has almost 9 million views on YouTube and is the most searched Romanian song on Shazam.

With a dreamy vibe and a cosmic look, Roxen thinks that music is a sort of therapy for her, but also for her fans. Her songs possess the magical power of healing and bringing harmony. Her music is universal, just like love.

The NDR has decided to place the selection of the German entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in the hands of experts. Two independent juries have determined who will be representing Germany in Rotterdam: a "Eurovision Jury" composed of 100 persons from all over Germany and an international expert jury of 20 music professionals. These music professionals have all been part of their home country's national ESC jury at one time. At the Eurovision Song Contest half of the points that are awarded come from the viewers and half from the national juries. The NDR based its process on this principle.

In a multi-stage process these two juries have evaluated both the artists and the songs. Who will be competing for Germany in the ESC finals, and what will be Germany's song will be broadcasted by ONE on Thursday, 27 February, at 9:30 p.m. in "Our Song for Rotterdam." The 45-minute show will be presented by Barbara Schöneberger.

Thomas Schreiber, Head of Entertainment at ARD: "Of course we were, unhappy with our result in Tel Aviv. In Rotterdam we want to repeat the success we had in 2018. The national and international experts were enthusiastic about our act, and it prevailed in competition with a group of fantastic participants. We are confident that our selection will meet with very broad approval among the ESC fans and - we hope - with great enthusiasm."

Christian Blenker, Head of ARDs Team for the Eurovision Song Contest: "Our two juries possess great musical expertise and a unique ESC instinct. Through this process we have also gained much more time for preparing the staging. We already have received the initial exciting ideas provided by internationally successful choreographers and staging professionals. In addition, the more than 600 artists who were present during the selection process are still protected. None of them has lost, and some of them may be participating again in the coming year."

Last April, some 2.26 million people in Germany were invited via the social media to be part of the Eurovision jury. At the end, 15,000 people took part in the online survey. In the run-up to the ESC 2019 in Tel Aviv, they had to predict the rankings of ten randomly selected ESC entries of that year and thus demonstrate their feel for a sound assessment of ESC entries. The best 100 of them were selected. The members of the international jury of experts were also selected according to whose assessment was very close to the actual results.

Alexandra Wolfslast, Head of Delegation for the German entry in the Eurovision Song Contest: "We know that many fans have been waiting for information for a long time. But we need the time to already concentrate on the many things we need to prepare for Rotterdam. So we are all the more pleased that we will be able to present this fantastic act on February 27th."

Benny Cristo heads to Rotterdam to represent the Czech Republic at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. His entry "Kemama" has collected 22 points from the audience and the jury. The best for foreign listeners was the group We All Poop and the ten-member foreign jury supported singer Barbora Mochowa. "The voting results show how strong the line-up of all seven finalists was. We will be honored with any of them representing us in Rotterdam. I firmly believe that we will build on the successes of the past years and the Czech Republic will make it to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time in a row. We are also pleased with the growing interest in this competition, which confirms the interest of fans who have voted 10,000 more this year than last year," says delegation head Cyril Hirsch . All seven clips were viewed by almost 1.5 million viewers on the Internet during the national round.

"I'm on an emotional merry-go-round. It's been ten years back, when I last begged people to vote for me, and since then I've been trying to prove that I know how to make music and I'm not just a person who came out of the talent contest to sign up for the next one. But the Eurovision Song Contest is different. I believe that thanks to the experience that the Czech Republic has given me, I will not disgrace myself and demonstrate the best I can. I'm very happy," Benny Cristo comments on his victory in the national round.

Romanian broadcaster TVR will collaborate this year with the most dynamic player on the Romanian music market, Global Records. Elena Știrbescu, project manager, stated that public television, as the organizer of the national team, started from a rigorous analysis of several elements, such as the results obtained by Romania at Eurovision over the years, the selection mechanisms practiced in different countries and the specificity of the local market. "The level at which the Eurovision competition is taking place in recent years, the complexity of the shows from the international stage, as well as the imperative of achieving excellence by the song and the artist representing Romania, have naturally led to this new vision and to collaboration with a partner. established in the field, as is Global Records", stated Liana Stanciu, head of the delegation at ESC2020. TVR has opted for this partnership based on a number of factors, such as the impressive figures the company has recorded in recent years regarding the presence of its songs and artists in the radio and TV charts, the figures related to YouTube accessions, the number of countries where the tracks produced by Global Records and the number of subscribers on social media accounts are listened to.

Taking into account these performances, the Romanian Television chose to collaborate, for the 65th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, with a record company that has a significant contribution to the imposition of Romanian music internationally, both by selecting the most competitive pieces for different types of audiences and territories, as well as through the promotion mechanisms and channels used with remarkable results. Another relevant factor in making this decision was the fact that this partnership between TVR and Global Records is one with zero financial value, but in which both partners invest financial, technical and artistic resources for representing Romania at Eurovision with an artistic moment of value, complex and attractive for both the Romanian and international audiences.

"Eurovision is the biggest competition in the world dedicated to music. Global Records has accepted TVR's proposal to collaborate for the selection of the representative of Romania in Rotterdam and is involved without any remuneration in the whole process dedicated to national selection. It is an honor and a challenge for Global Records to assist in choosing Romania's representative for Eurovision 2020. At this moment, we are just thinking about how and what we can do to represent Romania in Rotterdam with the best artist, the best piece and the best show. to make it happen, we made available and made available to TVR all our resources and expertise in the music industry. All to represent our country at the best international level. We look forward to starting the job and going to Eurovision with fresh forces",said Lucian Ștefan, CEO of Global Records.

Global Records has the most impressive portfolio of Romanian artists, producers and composers, whose songs quickly become national and international hits. In 2019, the Global Records hits, for 29 weeks, were placed on the first position on the Romanian radio stations and were listened to more than 1.8 billion times on YouTube. Global Records' YouTube channel network has more than 10.2 million subscribers. The tracks released by this record company have exceeded 100 million downloads on the Spotify and Apple Music platforms. Posts to the label's Instagram account reach over 1 million. In 2018, the tracks released under the Global Records brand have been heard all over the globe, specifically in 195 countries. They totaled 642 million views on YouTube. Fans around the world spent 34.8 million hours - the equivalent of 3,970 years - listening to the tracks by Global Records artists released that year. Of the 47 weeks of 2018, Global Records has been number 1 for 25 consecutive weeks on radio, respectively 30 weeks on TV. The cumulative numbers of subscribers who follow the artists in the Global Records portfolio and the record company itself exceed 20 million for Facebook and 11.5 million for Instagram.

AfriMusic Song Contest

Afrimusic Song Contest.

Sat-B - In My Heart

Sat-B - In My Heart

AfriMusic Song Contest 2020.

Global Records.

Global Records
