Bio

In addition to music Joci is serious athlete playing basketball. It caused a major dilemma as to which way to choose, because the sport was standing in front of the promising opportunities. After all, with a great internal struggle, the music road chosen. However, he remained completely unknown before competing in the talent contest Üstökös in 2001. It was a turning point in his life, because it was then when he decided that his life in the future will be determined only by family and music. Joci was influenced by music of the 1960s and 1970s, rock, pop, soul, and R&B music.

"I believed in my song, it was the most important song of my life" - said Joci after his victory. He stressed the fact that the winning song in 2017 was "a very big message for Roma people". This is proof that if you work hard for your dreams, you can succeed. Pápai added that in Kyiv in May, he will fight for the country's success and will try to do his best. He also stressed that the song will remain in Hungarian for the contest, as it has very strong national flavour.
- What are the three most interesting aspects about your entry?
- First, honesty. Second, the song is the summary of my life as everything in Origo is one hundred percent me. Third, this song is a blend of styles, it's modern world music – electronic beats meet with Hungarian and gypsy styles, it's an extraordinary yet finely balanced combination.
What are the three most impressive facts about you?
I'm very proud of being an honest person. Though I've had my fair share of struggles, I'm very emotional and I'm filled with love to the brim. I got so much love from my parents and this is so important to me – I wouldn't be able to write good songs without inner peace and balance and I am forever in debt to my parents for this. I hope to pass that profound love over to my children.
- Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?
Yes, definitely! I'm very close to God and he's very close to me. Therefore I can't get on stage without saying prayer. I can actually feel God's presence when he is there with me on the stage which is the most extraordinary feeling – when I'm there I see everything absolutely clear, it's like being in a slow-motion scene.
- Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important for you?
I love Hungary and the unique Hungarian music. I'm the first gypsy to proudly represent Hungary at the Eurovision Song Contest and I'm grateful for having so many people behind me.
Since Gábor Gundel-Takács, Hungarian Eurovision commentator of the past ten years left the national broadcaster, MTVA introduced new commentators for this year's event: Kriszta Rátonyi (who co-hosted this year A Dal) and Freddie 2016 Eurovision entrant.

25/04: Press-conference of Papai JociInterview of Joci Pápai to Origo.hu

- Yeah, I've watched my performance twice already, once during the show, right before the grand finale and I've also seen the part when I burst into tears during singing my song, Origo for the last time. I don't think that my victory has sunk in: my heart knows it already, but I still need to grasp it with my mind. It was an electrifying evening, indeed. You get hungry if you make it to the final four and you start to believe that you can actually win. I believed in my song from the start, I knew that it was very powerful and that it can make it to the top. But I never would have thought that I could win – I simply couldn't allow the thought to cross my mind as I was so afraid of being disillusioned. I remember when they read out my name it was a really special moment, I hope that I'll never forget that – it'll really give me strength for the rest of my life. Being able to represent a whole country at an international contest – and to do that with the help of the audience's votes: this makes me feel complete.
- You said that you know that your song was powerful. Why is it so and what's the message of Origo?
- For me this song is like the achievement of a lifetime, it represents my whole life. I wrote both the music and the lyrics and I've managed to write it just as I wanted to. Pain, knocking around, being offended, coming together and the love of music – these are significant things in my life and are all included in this song. I know that this is a bit of a cliché but the message of the song is hope. We shall never give up and we have to fight for our dreams and desires. I'm the living example why you should never give up: my dream has come true.

- I've always been a dreamer, even as a child my feelings prevailed. I'm very emotional and I can't deny my feelings. I have to do what that the voice within tells me to do.
- Getting to the Eurovision Song Contest – is that something that you've strived for?
- I've applied for A Dal (the Hungarian national selection show) first in 2016 and then this year. I really wanted to submit this song but it wasn't written for Eurovision. But then everything clicked this time: I finished the song right before the application deadline and I was told that I can perform at the TV show when we were shooting the music video. As if we were doing everything on purpose – except this was not the case!
- Why do you think that everything fell into place right now?
- I worked hard to write the very song that I had dreamed about. I composed it with the guitar and wrote the lyrics the same day. Something was going on inside me and I couldn't wait. We used my ideas in the arrangement also – the success, however, is down to my whole crew!

- I'm not reading the comments now and I did not read them during the show – but I know that there's been scores of them and I'm forever grateful for that. My closest friends told me that out of 800 comments 750 are about people being rippled with gooseflesh and being in tears and that's the real feedback for me. The jury in A Dal were not content with the visuals but it got better and better and in the final it was very good indeed – we've managed to put the mood of the music video to the stage.
- What happens in the coming weeks?
- Preparation for the Eurovision Song Contest. We have to discuss everything; I want to go to Kyiv fully prepared.
- What result would you be satisfied with?
- I don't like pondering on possible results and I don't want to promise that I'll be in the top 5. What counts for me is that after I come off stage I have the knowledge that I did what I could for my country.

- I got a most brilliant and most noble armour: I have to be able to wear it and to wear it with responsibility. I'm very proud and I will rise to the challenge. I have immense support from my friends and family but I couldn't spend quality time with them since the final.
- How much time do you spend with your friends?
- My friends are so important to me – I don't have that many, but the ones I have are true friends. I like to live my life with ease, to stay in ‘the zone' – so this rush is quite hard for me. I really need to recharge at home with my family with my two kids – they are my safe haven.
- Are they aware of what's happening?
- My daughter is 12 and my son is 6. They know what happens to me but they deal with it in a low-key manner. They don't brag about it, they don't talk about it too much and this is a good thing.

- I think I've already opened up with Origo. Pain, suffering, distress are part of human nature and I'm no exception. I've been building walls of isolation around me and recently I've started bringing them down – and I started to experience success since then. I have to open up to get the world to know me, to see into my soul.
- Were success and fame your goals as a child?
- I've never strived for fame, I wasn't interested in that, quite the reverse. I would only deal with music if I could, but in Hungary that's not an option. That's also what I meant when I said that I've built walls: I'd always say that I'm a composer, a singersongwriter, that's what I do. But that's not what you do in Hungary. You have to do ‘extra-curricular' things to show your personality. I used to think that fooling around in a TV show is no-go for a true artist, but you have to let go of these thoughts. The only thing that counts is to give something back to the audience.

- Right from the start I was living with a huge gipsy orchestra led by my father. There were 70 people on stage singing and dancing – you can imagine the amplitude of their energy! What they did on stage would have been up to par everywhere in the world. These are the roots that I can go back to anytime. However, I tried to distance myself from this legacy for some time. But I don't mind that as it was still growing inside me and this was the time to bring it to the surface. It was meant to be like this.
- Can you make a living as a singer in Hungary?
- Honestly, for me being a singer was the only choice as that's the only thing I know how to do! That's my path and I can't sacrifice my only and my biggest treasure. And you can see this in my song, Origo. It's as if I were not the author but merely an agent in this whole thing. Maybe the words were given to me by God and He helped with the melodies. He was with me during the whole of A Dal, in the prayers before I entered the stage. There's an indescribable connection between us. And I'll need him more than ever in Kyiv.

- I'm a professional hypochondriac! I worry way too much which is something I inherited from my father. I tend to get nervous, that's why I need to be alone before I go to the stage. I shut out the world outside for 90 minutes. Everyone knows this in my team and they all leave me alone. I do this no matter if I perform in a kindergarten or in front of thousands.
- Do you think that the way people look at you changed recently?
- I hope not! I levelled up but I'll try to be the humble little boy I was at the age of 5.
- Were you humble?
- And cool at the same time! But my parents planted love in my heart and my whole life is centred on this love. I had had a beautiful childhood and love defined our lives despite not always being in a good position in terms of money…

- Absolutely! I don't know what I'll do for 14 days in Kyiv without my family. But I'm a grown-up man so I have to get myself together. Once I was in Greece for six days and I called my family crying to tell them that I want to go home.
- There must be people who bear malice towards you. How about them?
- If you are being attacked that means that you are at the right place. Each and every successful person gets befouled from time to time. My solution is that I don't care. I'm pretty sure that some people dislike the fact that a gipsy goes to the Eurovision Song Contest, but I'm not reading the comments. I think that the fact that Hungarian people placed their confidence in a gipsy guy is a breakthrough. I'm the first gipsy to proudly represent Hungary at the Eurovision Song Contest and I'm grateful for having so many people behind me.

Preselection

Entries in A DAL (lyrics and music) must not have been commercially released and performed in public, and must not have appeared on any media platform (TV, radio, online) before 1 September 2016. The maximum duration of each song is 3 minutes. Only such artists' submissions are accepted who have previously released a music album or had national radio airplay and/or television appearances, and who have a valid contract with a record company and/or with a professional management. All artists competing on stage must be aged at least 16 on the day of the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv, i.e. 9 May 2017. Performers of the songs have to be Hungarian citizens or have to speak Hungarian as their native language. Composers who are foreign citizens and whose native language is not Hungarian may only enter the contest if their song is recorded with an artist who complies with the regulations.
The applicants acknowledge and agree that the Hungarian National Final (A DAL) is a competition of songs and not of performers. Therefore DUNA has the right to decide upon the performer of a song, if necessary. Songs submitted to A DAL 2017 should preferably be written in Hungarian language. However, the contestants may enter their songs in English and/or in any language of officially recognised national and ethnic minorities living in Hungary as well but then the Hungarian translation of the lyrics has to be provided in any case. DUNA has the right to decide upon the language in which the winning song of A DAL 2017 is submitted for the Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv.

The winner of A DAL 2017, Hungary's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest and their team undertake to dedicate exclusive attention to the participation in the contest in the time period between the national final and the grand final of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest and will do their best in order to reach the highest possible result, including the compliance with all the deadlines set by DUNA and the EBU and the compulsory participation in promotional events related to the Eurovision Song Contest. Furthermore, the winning artist of A DAL 2017 undertakes to perform without fee at up to five events organised or promoted by MTVA until 31 December 2017.

Special guests of the shows: Margaret Island (Heat 1), Csaba Vastag (Heat 2), Irie Maffia (Heat 3), Szilvia Péter Szabó (Semifinal 1), Magdi Rúzsa (Semifinal 2), Freddie, Caramel (Final)

• Ferenc Molnár Caramel, award-winning singer (Fonogram Award)
• Adrienn Zsédenyi Zséda, award-winning singer (Fonogram and EMeRTon Awards)
• Károly Frenreisz, founder of the bands LGT and Skorpió, a legend of Hungarian rock music
• Miklós Both, award-winning composer/guitarist/singer (Fonogram and Budai Award, known from his band Napra)
As in previous years the viewers will take on the responsibility of the fifth jury member: A Dal 2017 app will be available through the MédiaKlikk Plusz app.
Ferenc Molnár Caramel was revealed as a new member of the jury for A Dal 2017. When asked about the differences in judging the performances of A Dal 2017 to other competitions, he said:
"The biggest difference is the fact that in A Dal we aren't expressing an opinion about the performer but rather about the song itself. The voice of the artist is important – but the melody and the creativity play a much more important role here. If you ask me, I'd like to find today's hit song. I had been a jury member in various talent shows and I can't wait for A Dal to begin. It's an electrifying task as you have to listen to the songs in a slightly different way. The voice is significant of course, but at the end of the day it's just another instrument of delivering the message. And it is the message that I go for. That being said, an outstanding voice is a treasure indeed – so we will keep our ears open. At this point I am quite sure that the next edition of A Dal will be amazing. The competitors will blow your mind; the songs are simply top notch. I'm sure that the show will be very exciting. And in the finale we will find the song that will be a worthy representative of Hungary on international level – a song that will be engraved in all our hearts"
Levente Harsányi, Csilla Tatár, and Krisztina Rátonyi (Green-room, and 1st semifinal) hosted the show. The final reached 542,000 viewers, 13.7% lower than in 2016. Heat 1: 488,742, Heat 2: 486,117, Heat 3: 489,551, Semifinal 1: 261,603, Semifinal 2: 425,102, Final: 542,000.

Fonogram Award
Budai
