Bio

Imri Ziv is 25 years old and comes from the city of Hod HaSharon in central Israel. He is son of painter and high tech specialist, his brother is musician and graphic artist, and sister is a lawyer. Ziv admit that his first school years were not pleasant for him, he was subject of verbal abuses and insults, and eventually he was forced to change schools.

Ziv has discovered his interest to music at the age of 11, when he began studying at the School of Fine Arts in Hod Hasharon. From there he went to high school Ilan Ramon where also continued music studies, and the served in the Education Corps band. At the age of 20 Ziv first got to public eye competing in "The Voice of Israel" in the team of Rami Kleinstein in 2012, but he was eliminated early in the program on the stage of duels. He thinks this was a good experience, which taught him how to work with TV productions.

His comeback took place as backing vocalist. First he was approached by Kathleen Reiter to perform in KDAM-Eurovision 2013. "Kathleen was considered the favorite to win, and I decided to go for it. I did not really know what the Eurovision is, but it sounded cool.", Ziv explains. Reiter didn't win, but Ziv was noticed and two years later, when Doron Medalie wrote the song "Golden Boy", he approached Ziv and offered to accompany Nadav Guedj in Vienna. Again this didn't lead to a breakthrough, but he was climbing step by step and was eventually invited to back up Hovi Star in Stockholm.

It was Hovi Star who numerous of times proposed Imri to enter "The Next Star" program, but Ziv thought that reality shows were too emotional for him. Eventually, he came to conclusion that this still can be the opportunity he has been seeking, and he decided to give it a go. Eventually Ziv won fourth season of The Next Star program and was chosen to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Kyiv in May 2017.

Since a young age, IMRI has been singing professionally in many languages, including Spanish, English and Hebrew, and performed in dozens of concerts all around the world. In addition to singing, he also enjoys playing guitar and the piano, has studied acting and played in various Hebrew voice over roles in animated series. IMRI is currently a second-year Visual Communications bachelor's degree student.

"For four years, Israel has been missing the finals, and then when The Next star started to be used as selection show, we have qualified twice. My task and it is not an easy one, is to maintain this trend. I have already been there both times and I know how it feels, how your heart stops beating during the result announcement. It's an indescribable feeling. The song I would like to perform at Eurovision should be rhythmic and fun, and give the opportunity to showcase my vocal"

Credit: Ronen Akerman The Israeli song for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest is called I Feel Alive. The song was written and composed by Dolev Ram and Penn Hazut. The two writers behind the song I Feel Alive are also responsible for some of the biggest hits in Israel over the past year. The song was chosen from among dozens of songs by a special joint expert-committee, comprising of representatives of IBA (Israel Broadcasting Authority), Keshet Broadcasting (where The Next Star for Eurovision was aired) and IPBC (Israel Public Broadcasting Corporation), chaired by IBA's Dr. Moshe Morad. "I feel alive" is a contemporary dance song that mixes electronic beats, as well as pop elements, to create an up tempo anthem. It's a song about rising up to challenges and achieving one's goals, this aligns perfectly with Imri's own personal story.

Building on from the success of the mega-hit Malkat Ha'Shoshanim (Queen of the Roses), the official song of Israel's 2015 Gay Pride Parade that brought them to public attention, Penn Hazut and Dolev Ram have now established themselves at the forefront of the Israeli music scene. Working from their Tel Aviv studio, where they compose, write and produce, Penn and Dolev have created major hits which were performed by some of Israel's top artists that became part of the soundtrack of life in Israel today. They also produce commercials and music for the children's channel. The playlist of the songs they have created together, over the last few years, has accumulated more than 130 million hits on YouTube. Other popular singers with whom they have worked include Eyal Golan (Bati Elaich), Eden Ben Zaken (Queen of Roses), Sarit Hadad (Lama Li), Moshe Peretz, Dudu Aharon (Mazal Moznaim), Noa Kirel (Yesh Bi Ahava) and Lior Narkis.

- What are the three most interesting aspects about your entry?
- The number is a pop-dance song, to which I will bring an ethnic groove, representing my country, with an additional touch of emotion. The song is about my journey to success, trying to find my way and not giving up at any point. When comparing it to other songs from this year, it is different and going to set the stage on fire!

- What are the three most impressive facts about you?
- I think it's quite impressive that before turning 26, I managed to take part in two Eurovision Song Contests as a backing vocalist, and this third time as the lead singer. Apart from singing, I also studied acting and have played in various Hebrew voice over roles in animated series. At the age of two I already knew the lyrics to Queen's We Are the Champions and I apparently sang it in front of my family and friends on every possible occasion.

- Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?
- I always take time to do some breathing exercises before I walk onto the stage. However, I think I will adopt the routine which was used in the last two Eurovision Song Contests: we basically all stood in a circle, holding hands and singing a former Israeli Eurovision song, before going crazy and dancing to it.

- Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important for you?
Ever since I was a little boy, I dreamed of singing on a big stage in front of millions of people. You can only imagine how much of an honour it is for me to be given the chance to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest, not to mention representing my country. As an artist, I think Eurovision is a big stepping stone in my career and I hope it will allow me to grow professionally and release my own songs soon.

Interview

After his victory at the Next Star For Eurovision Imri Ziv spoke with ESCKAZ correspondent, head of the Eurovision Ukraine fan club Daniel Lutin. "I feel that I want to break this world out" - so poetically performer has expressed his emotions after the show has ended.

He said he is very much looking forward to a trip to Ukraine for the contest, since he himself is Ukrainian at a quarter. "So far, I only know a few words in Russian, but now I will try to learn some Ukrainian, I hope I will have some time for this,", he said.

The singer has not yet heard any options of his possible contest entry. "I know that the committee, which selects the song, will be meeting the next week, so there's still some time until that. First I need to completely realize what has happened and regain my consciousness, and then we will begin active work". When asked what kind of song he would prefer to perform - faster or slower, Imri said "I prefer a more active song, the one for which you can make a great stage show, but we still have time, and we will consider all the options to find the best entry possible".

"I am familiar with the Eurovision and its fans for two years now, I know how it important is this contest for them, and I'm so glad that the people of Israel chose me as their representative. I was reading what was written about our preselection in Europe, I am pleased that already there are people who are rooting for me and looking forward to my participation in the contest. Thank you all very much, kiss you all"

Preselection

For the third year, Israel was using the talent show "The Next Star", relabelled as "The Next Star for Eurovision" (הכוכב הבא לאירוויזיון, Hakochav Haba L'Eirovizion), of format known worldwide as "Rising Star", produced by Teddy Productions and broadcasted on the Israeli Channel 2 Keshet, as the artist selection for Eurovision. Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (IPBC), a new Public broadcaster, replacing IBA from 2017, launched a tender for the production of the TV show for the selection of Eurovision entrant, and as no other shows have submitted a bid, "The Next Star for Eurovision" was declared the winner of the tender.

The show will be made of ten episodes broadcast starting 2 January and finishing on 13 February, and it is expected that this year the song will be internally selected to the winner of the competition on a later date. There have been some changes in the jury panel for the show: Pop duo Static & Ben El Tavori and Assaf Amdursky have replaced Mooki and Assaf Etedgi, joining Harel Skaat and Keren Peles on the judging panel. Show will be hosted by Asi Azar and Rotem Sela.

This year's show saw some very touching stories, like the one of Yonit Zaidenberg, a transgender girl, coming from an ultra-orthodox family escorted by her father; 17-year-old Shahar Taboch who sang about the break up with his boyfriend; and 16-and-a-half-year-old Chen Maximov, whose high school friends show her no support.

In the early selection rounds the artist stands in front of a giant LED wall which in the real-time displays the user pictures of those who have voted for him via special application. The artist sees nothing but this interactive wall. Behind the wall are sitting jury members and the audience - and they see only the projection of the artist. If the singer manages to win the sympathy of the audience, the scale of loyalty, which is displayed on the TV screen, increases, the wall rises and the artist proceeds to the next round. In order to raise the wall, the artist need to win more than 70% of the vote. 10% of sympathy votes can be given by each member of the jury.

As the result of auditions in Israel to the next stage qualified 20 performers. However, next tour took place behind closed doors, and by the decision of the jury only 8 of contestants have appeared in the 6th show. To the semifinal will qualify only 6, and to the final show - 4.

The final, which will take place on 13 February, feature two rounds: The first will include two duels, where the winner will automatically qualify to the next round. The judges will then decide who among the two remaining non-qualifiers will join the thrilling dual of three. The contestant that will gain the highest percentage of the viewers' vote will become Israel's representative in Kyiv. Voting is run via Mako app, or online through Facebook login.

Malkat Ha'Shoshanim (Queen of the Roses), Среди популярных исполнителей, с которыми они работали - Eyal Golan (Bati Elaich), Eden Ben Zaken (Queen of Roses), Sarit Hadad (Lama Li), Moshe Peretz, Dudu Aharon (Mazal Moznaim), Noa Kirel (Yesh Bi Ahava) и Lior Narkis.

Queen We Are The Champions

Третий год подряд, представитель Израиля на Евровидении будет выбран посредством шоу "The Next Star", переименованного "The Next Star for Eurovision" (הכוכב הבא לאירוויזיון, Hakochav Haba L'Eirovizion), формата всемирно известного как "Rising Star", а в России выходившего как шоу "Артист", продюсируемого компанией Teddy Productions, и выходящего в эфир 2го канала Израиля Keshet.
