Bio

Claudia Faniello was born on 25 February 1988 and raised in Qawra Malta, along with her siblings Fabrizio and Miriana. Claudia Faniello started her musical career at the young age of 12, when she began to participate in a variety of television shows and festivals, successfully placing amongst the top. In 2001, at the Phoenicia Hotel in Malta, she won the 'Talentissimi Juniors'. A year later she sang live with Malta's National Orchestra in aid of impoverished children at the University of Malta. She was accompanied by Malta's ambassadors in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004, Julie & Ludwig and also her brother Fabrizio (represented Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001). At the Mediterranean Conference Festival, in 2003 she sang at a concert with Fabrizio Faniello while a year later she sang again with the National Orchestra with Nadine Axisa, Fabrizio and Philippa. In 2005 she classified fourth on 'Hotspot' - a TV show programmed on Net TV.

She won the Festival Kanzunetta Indipendenza 2006 with the song "Ma Nafx". Claudia was determined to continue her path of success and left Malta in June to participate in the Crotone Music Show, where she was greeted with great enthusiasm from the Italian crowd who responded positively to her interpretation of 'Bajja tad-Deheb'. 'Wild Flower', her next single, was premiered during a Music Show held in Crotone, aired on Rai Tre, and shortly afterwards in Malta.

She represented Malta in the Suncane Skale festival held in Montenegro with the song "Caravagio" which was also a hot favourite with the Montenegrin public. The year came to an end with a nomination for Best Female Artist in the Coca-Cola Malta Music Awards 2008. A busy year followed, with various songs and the participation in Mario Carta's Concert as a supporting act, and the opportunity to once again represent her country at the prestigious Golden Stag Contest in Romania where she performed the song "lei li ra". She released her debut album "Convincingly Better" in August 2010. This was a different sound from what she was mostly known for, shedding a light on her real self. The album features pop/rock tracks including her single "I hate this song". In 2012 she recorded promotional duet version of "Echoes", French Eurovision entry of Anggun.

Claudia's distinct vocal timbre that varies from a low husky lamentation to a strong soulful voice shows off her versatility and represents who she is as an individual. Her charisma, along with being very sensitive, somewhat fragile yet feisty, ambitious and confident, attracts a lot of people. These characteristics reflect upon her life experiences and have always helped her in taking on different challenges both personally and musically.

Her first experience in the Maltasong for Europe Festival was in 2006, with the song "High Alert!" finishing 12th. Since then she has competed in 2007 - "L'imhabba Ghamja" (7th in semifinal), 2008 - "Caravagio" (2nd), "Sunrise" (3rd), 2009 - "Blue Sonata" (4th), "Midas Touch" (semifinal), 2010 - "Samsara" (8th), 2011 - "Movie in My Mind" (9th), 2012 - "Pure" (2nd), 2013 - "When It's Time" (7th).

Faniello won Maltese ticket to the Eurovision with "Breathlessly", her 11th national preselection entry in 9 years of participation. The winning song is a ballad, composed by Philip Vella and Sean Vella and written by Gerard James Borg. "I had a break and returned only after three years, because I wanted to focus on my career and because I wanted to be back with the right song... and I really believed in Breathlessly,". She feel "Breathlessly" captures so many special emotions in just one song. She said that, "If it manages to touch people the way it has touched me, then I will be happy. After all, the most beautiful things in this world need to be felt with the heart.".

Philip Vella is one of the most successful composers in Malta. He has won the main national festivals of Malta several times such as the Song for Europe festival, and other local and foreign festivals. Many of his compositions have been used in various special occasions in Malta such as the anthem used in the official celebrations to mark Malta’s entry into the European Union, ‘Worker of the Year’ manifestations, the anthem of the ‘Small Nations Games’ held in Malta in 2003. He also wrote the song to celebrate ‘Year of languages’ in 2002 and also composed the music for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth heads of Government meeting, held in Malta, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Gerard James Borg has written five songs which have represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest, including 7th Wonder, the song that brought Malta just 12 points away from victory and finished in second place. In 2014 he co-wrote the entry Shine for Russia which placed seventh in the Grand Final. In total he has written over fifty songs for various Eurovision selections all over Europe, coming close to a win on many occasions. Outside of the Eurovision arena, Gerard has written for artists in different countries and has also enjoyed chart successes. In Malta he is also a published author and his debut novel, Sliema Wives, and his second novel, Madliena Married Men, have both soared to the number one spot in the bestseller charts after their first week of release. He is currently working on new projects which includes his third novel.

A good morning to everybody! Woke up this morning cherishing nothing but special memories from an exciting evening that...

- What are the three most interesting aspects about your entry?
- A deep emotion. A fluid passion. A defined sophistication.

- What are the three most impressive facts about you?
- I work as a learning support assistant - meaning I work with kids who have intellectual, physical and behavioural difficulties. I spent most of my teenage life suffering from bulimia and today I go around schools, youth centres & hospitals raising awareness of the illness with the general public. I'm a travel junkie & love history. I must have been an Egyptian in a previous life!

- Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?
- I don't believe in lucky charms or any particular routines however I usually say a little prayer & remind myself of the journey I went through to become who I am today. Self-motivation.

- Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important for you?
- The Eurovision stage has evolved into something so big that it is important for every artist. I grew up watching the Eurovision Song Contest, and my brother represented Malta twice in the contest. It took me nine years to get there, so you can understand that for me, it is not only about my career, but it comes from the heart.

Draw of the opening and closing act took place on 28 December during the press and participants meeting: Klinsmann Coleiro will be singing first while Claudia Faniello will be singing last, in 16th place before the televoting starts.

Music festival will take place on 18 February at the MFCC at Ta'Qali. This year, the national final jury will be the general public who will use televoting. New CEO of PBS John Bundy stated on 23 October in an interview to Illum that in 2017 the singer who will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Ukraine will be chosen by the public. In recent years, the public vote had a weight of only 16.6%, while 5-person jury which included international professionals, accounted to 83.3% of the vote. Public who can only phone once from every number.

Mr Bundy said: "The public will decide who it wants to represent us in Ukraine in May. We are asking the singers to concentrate on the song, the voice and the sound of the song and forget what is happening behind them. The 16 singers will all be treated equally. These are all winning songs and that is why they need to all be treated the same. We have therefore created a special schedule for the equal promotion of every singer"

The winning song will represent Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Kyiv, as this year national selection rules do not provide the artist an option for a song change.

The presenters of the final session will be facing a stiff challenge as this will be their first experience. Daniel Azzopardi is well-known for his role as Guido in the high-popular TVM series ‘Strada Stretta'. He will be accompanied by Charlene Mercieca, a courageous woman who has been bravely fighting cancer. "Charlene Mercieca, who has undergone cancer, will be one of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest presenters and wants to put forward a positive message. She is a highly positive person who has undergone difficult periods throughout her life and wants to reflect her difficulties by giving a message in the opposite manner, that of moving from a difficult to a positive life", says John Bundy.

После этого она принимала участие в 2007 - "L'imhabba Ghamja" (7я в полуфинале), 2008 - "Caravagio" (2я), "Sunrise" (3я), 2009 - "Blue Sonata" (4я), "Midas Touch" (полуфинал), 2010 - "Samsara" (8я), 2011 - "Movie in My Mind" (9я), 2012 - "Pure" (2я), 2013 - "When It's Time" (7я).
