Bio

Joakim With Steen aka JOWST (27) from Steinkjer is a fan of pop music and opponent of the Law of Jante. He prefers Spotify over vinyl and Netflix over BluRay. He is good with the guitar, but has "keyboard and mouse" as his main instruments. He is creative, inclusive, impatient, innovative, curious, enthusiastic and possess a drive that allows him complete his goal.

At the age of 15 he got an interest in punk rock, songwriting and bands. After finishing music producer-education in Noroff, where he subsequently worked as a teacher, he started Red Line Studio where he has worked as a sound engineer and producer since 2011, doing the job full time since 2016. Among artists he worked with are Lence George, Skallebank, Clmd, Lali, Once Upon A Dead Man, Waikiki, Ole Stokke, Nicoline.

"I do not understand why we should have every Sunday free and quit early on Fridays and days with extra fine weather. If I had a boring job, so I might do it. But we live once and I want to get done as much as possible, as quickly as possible. And luckily I work with what I want to work on. As long as the name of the day ends with "day" - it's just a day for me"

In 2016 Joakim worked with Eirik Næss on the entry submitted to MGP which was sung by female vocalist. JOWST also worked on several potential songs for Ricky Martin which eventually didn't make the cut, and thus may be considered for MGP 2018. But it was only with the project "Making A Hit" and the song "Grab The Moment" that made him focused on his own music and JOWST. The goal of creating his own music is to achieve something more, push himself beyond the comfort zone. Something he feels he is doing that by participating in MGP.

"Working as a sound engineer and producer for many others in all possible genres, reflected enough in my own productions. And I'm a fan of mixing genres. That's how one can make something that will stand out"

Last year, JOWST has decided to work on a hit song in the modern way. Creating a fairly simple instrumental demo, he has published it in closed groups on Facebook asking if there's someone who would like to write lyrics for it and record the demo. He got three proposals, one of which came from singer/songwriter Jonas McDonnel. Jonas sent in a pretty poor technical demo, but with a brilliant chorus. In May the song, which turned to be a mix of HipHop and Pop was recorded. Joakim proceeded sharing each recording session materials on Facebook, letting friends follow, and provide feedback on, the whole process of writing and producing of what became "Grab The Moment". "There were a total of 23 studio sessions, until the song was completed. Had someone hired my affordable studio for so many days, it had actually costed 57.500 NOK (6250 Euro)". In late December, NRK has approached JOWST to tell him that they would like to have Grab The Moment competing in Melody Grand Prix 2016.

On vocals the song got Aleksander Walmann. He grew up in a musical family and has been keen in music since he was very young. In Spring 2012 he participated in The Voice, where he reached the final. Since then he warmed up for Sivert Høyem, Thom Hell, Ole Paus and Sondre Lerche. In addition he gave his voice to the character Roberto in the animated film Rio 2. He currently works in the studio where he is preparing new releases of his own music and for other artists in Norway.

Debut single of JOWST "Grab The Moment" was written by Jonas McDonnell and composed by Joakim With Steen. It was released on 15 February 2017, at Three15 Records.

Jonas McDonnell has been active on the music scene since he was a teenager and has been a member of several bands. At the age of 15, he made trance music and later he began to rap and write his own songs. After some years of rapping, he began writing and singing songs in the pop genre, accompanied by his guitar. In 2016, he started a collaboration with songwriter and producer Joakim With Steen. He wrote the lyrics for the song Grab the Moment, which will represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest this year. McDonnell has studied media, information and communication technology and design at Volda University College.

"I wanted to refuse to participate in Melodi Grand Prix when I got the offer, but then I remembered what the song was about, and that I get a chance of moving from playing on school evenings, to Oslo Spektrum and a million of TV viewers. The next goal will be playing in Ukraine, for over a hundred million viewers. With Grab The Moment I wants to inspire others to do the same, to take advantage of the chances you get and if you do not feel that you get enough of the chances you deserve: create them yourself!

What are the three most interesting aspects about your entry?
- My dynamic mask. The lyrics and the message of the song. The nice blend of many genres in an up-to-date mix.

What are the three most impressive facts about you?
- Aleksander was a finalist in the Norwegian The Voice in 2012. We won our national selection for the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. We were considered to be the biggest underdogs in our national selection.

Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?
- We both walk a lot, and get quite active. JOWST drinks a lot of coffee, and Aleksander always sings an Ed Sheeran song.

Why is the Eurovision Song Contest important for you?
- It's important for me that people get the possibility to enjoy and use my music for something good. There could not be a better way than showing it to all the viewers of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Interview

Next guests at the ESCKAZ / @EurovisionCoverage interview sessions are representatives of Norway and Melodi Grand Prix - NRK winners JOWST and Aleksander Walmann. Since they have appeared to be a last moment addition to the Eurovision PreParty Riga line-up, we’re happy to present both text and video interview with the artists.

"I feel awesome. I feel like I've been chosen to represent the whole country. Like if it was the national football team. And now we just cant wait to perform for almost 200 million viewers!", says Joakim With Steen who performs under name of JOWST. "JOWST is more like a concept, rather than just my artist name. Aleksander sings on this song, and he will probably sing on another one. He may just create the lyrics for someone else to sing. Whatever makes the best song possible. In a long term basis he is a guest, but right now, he is my partner (in like a band/duo way)", he explains.

At the Eurovision 2017 JOWST and Alexander will perform song "Grab The Moment", which they sum up as "an entry, made to inspire and motivate people through its words and music". "The song was shaped in my studio, as like a side project with my other work for other artists. I figured out that I wanted my friends, family and colleges get to see how I made music, and I wanted to get feedback on the production as i was working on it. We had like different instruments playing the cords. We tried rapping, we tried acoustic guitar, and a lot of things, and people told me what they liked best, and sometimes i went with what people said, and other times I did not. This all was with the guy who made the lyrics, and not Aleksander. Nobody got to hear the finish result before the final in Melodi Grand Prix", explains JOWST. The song wasn't even completed when it was submitted. "I saw the advertisement then it was still in progress, and thought it was good enough for considering. And thought: "Why not?"

When the song was finished and it became clear that it will be competing in Melodi Grand Prix, the search for the perfect vocalist has started. "We sent out a instrumental of the song, to maybe 10 vocalists, and got about 7 in return. One of them was Aleksander. I knew about Aleksander, from The Voice, but I never thought about him when we where searching for the vocalist. But when I've listened to it, I understood that this was the guy, right away"

JOWST thinks that the fact the song is in a very up-to-date genre helped them to win the national final. "And that the lyrics has meaning. Its more that just for show. And I believe people get that", he adds. There will be no changes brought in the song prior to the international final. "But we will probably do a acoustic version some time soon, and there will probably be an remix-competition some day soon too". There also are plans to film the music video for the entry. Speaking about stage presentation, he mentions that it will be similar to the Melodi Grand Prix one - "only bigger, more colors, and more “Dynamic”. We hope that we can impress with the music, and not with dancers or things that does not underline the message in the song"

Joakim explains that performing in a mask or with hidden face is a quite well known concept for producers, lik Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Alan Walker etc. "Maybe it is like the thing a producer needs to let himself get out on that stage in front of 1 million viewers. But I also think that it gets easier for another bedroom producer to see himself on that stage in the future. And I think that is inspiring. And that is what I want to do with my music - Inspire people", he says. In the national final JOWST and Alexander have been joined by two stage members - Ole and Daniel. "In a couple of days, we'll know if they both will join us in Kyiv. Because this time we want the so sing along in the chorus, and we must do a soundcheck first. We will also have two additional band members in Kyiv"

"We aim for the confetti rain in the end", confidently says JOWST about their contest goal. Speaking about preparation plans, he mentions that first of all they will make sure that everything is exactly how they want it to be on stage. "Other than that we will just keep the mood up, be positive and drink A LOT of coffee". Band plans to attend a lot of promotional events and at this moment are in Riga for the Pre-Party.

As we have reported earlier, JOWST has also listened all entries of the contest available on Spotify. Is he a Eurovision fan? "I am a huge fan of music in general. I love listening to music, and to think about music, and to think about other things while listening to music. I always watch the contest, but I have to say I am more of a fan this year", he explains. Band has attended promotional event in Norway organized by Ukrainian embassy and chamber of commerce, and managed to try out traditional vyshivanka shirts. "I have to say that I love those shirts! I will use it in Ukraine. Thats OK, right? It is not like it is not good to use it every day?", asks JOWST adding "I am very excited to go to Ukraine, and to taste the food, speak to the people, see the country and the culture".

In fact, JOWST has already submitted a track for MGP 2018, so he may become regular in the competition. He is also working on the follow up single which will be released after ESC. "We were talking about that today. And I have the instrumental, and the chorus. I think it is awesome, and I cant wait to work some more on it, but I’m afraid that I won’t have time to finish it before the end of the ESC contest".

"I hope you’ll listen to the lyrics of the song. Maybe read the lyrics while listening to it, and try to use it in your advantage. And just be a yes-man (or a yes-woman) and take all the possibilities that you get, even though that it is outside your comfort zone. This is what we call “Grab The Moment”

"The mask is there to stay", says JOWST in an inerview to VG. For the musician there never was a desire to bask in the glory. "I'm not in the Eurovision to be celebrity. It's the music that's important, and I want people to recognize themselves in the lyrics. It becomes easier when I appear as a faceless person", explains Joakim With Steen. "The mask is a shield for me. The last time I played live before Oslo Spectrum, was in front of 100 people in a rock сlub in Trondheim. So it was a big step to take".

Steen says that his partner thought it was funny to see him on TV, because she hardly recognized him. He moved on stage. "She giggled, for she knows that I'm not like that. I'm not one who goes out on the floor and dances. The truth is that without the mask, there would not have been much movement from me. I step into a role when I get it on"

The mask Steen used in Spectrum will be further developed before Kyiv. "We thought that we could plug in some batteries, and so it would flash. But actually it requires a special guy to sit throughout our show and control everything with color, so the mask should match the screens around. It is very comprehensive task".

As he explained in the interview to ESCKAZ, Joakim initially even didn't want to be on the stage at all - also because he was expecting a child in these days, but Aleksander managed to persuade him. "This is our common project. So we agreed that he could use the mask. The mask is important for our vision. It underlines the message and preserves the mystique".

On stage in Kyiv JOWST and Aleksander will have two more instrumentalists and two backing vocalists, who will not be visible on screens. "We are planning some surprises too", explains the guys.

Band is looking forward more pre-parties appearances. "The fans are so excited. And for me who has never been in London, this is a childhood dream come true. For us, these motivational trips are more than all the world's PR", said Walmann. For Steen, whose daughter Sofia is just seven weeks old, however, it is a little demanding. "Yes, it's a bit difficult, but we get help from family. So it's fine".

Interestingly, Joakim's partner is Russian-Lithuanian Rita Rybakova, and the couple thinks he surname may hint on the Eurovision success, as Norway had already Eurovision victory with certain artist named Rybak.

"When we found out that we were expecting Sofia, I had really thought that I should not be included in the Eurovision myself. But then I came to the conclusion that that is quite a lot more fun to show her this later that her father performed at the Eurovision. Not as much fun to say that I had just written the song", says Steen.

Preselection

Norwegian broadcaster NRK once again will be choosing its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest through national selection process Melodi Grand Prix.

Norway has launched its search for the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 entry on 9 June. "We are looking for the best songs that can take home the victory in Ukraine", says MGP-general Jan Fredrik Karlsen. "When one is MGP-general, you can not go into such a competition and not have the faith to win. I am 100 percent ready to take the Eurovision Song Contest back to Norway", he said.

"The invitation is open to anyone who writes songs. This is a unique chance to try to get a place in the world's largest music competition. We are open to all kinds of music within a broad understanding of pop music genre. It can be anything from hard rock, to bubblegum, and everything in between", says project manager Stig Karlsen

Deadline to submit entries is 11th of September, submission form is available here. As usual, there was no restrictions on the nationality of songwriters or performers. The entries should have been unpublished and not previously performed in public. At this stage there was no special requirements for the quality of the submitted demos. The most important thing was that the jury get an impression of the melody, lyrics and arrangements. There was no time limit on the songs submitted, but should the song be chosen, the track must be shortened so that it is no longer than 3 minutes. Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation reserved the right to select the artists who will perform the songs, but this is done in dialogue with the songwriters. Of 1035 entries 10 were chosen for Melodi Grand Prix final by the professional jury around November.

On 7 September, it was announced that MGP will do what Swedes usually do at the Melodifestivalen - reintroduce the international jury system that has brought Bobbysocks and Secret Garden to the top in the international song contest.

"We have received clear orders from the top management that we should win the Eurovision Song Contest again within a few years. We are aiming on it now and let's see if we might be able to win Eurovision already in 2017", says MGP project leader Stig Karlsen. After broadcasting chief Thor Gjermund Eriksen gave clear orders to ensure ESC victory, the MGP editors have been busy working on a plan to bring the international final to Norway. One of the measures is to reintroduce an international jury in the Norwegian ESC final. Now MGP editors do thorough work to ensure that the entry Norway sends to the international final has the best possible chances to hit an international audience.

"What we're doing this time is to involve an international jury. We will bring 10-12 European countries to the Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix final to help us to select the right song", says Karlsen. Exactly which countries will join in and how the votes should be weighted in relation to the public vote, is not certain yet. What is clear is that Norway already has good experience of the scheme. "Norway has used the international jury twice before, in 1985 and 1995 and both times we won. One might ask whether it is a coincidence, but I think it helps us on a road to victory. In 1985, Norway won the final for the first time with Bobbysocks "La det swinge". Ten years later the composer Rolf Løvland repeated the success with Secret Garden and the song "Nocturne."

Morten Thomassen of the Norwegian Grand Prix fan club welcomes back the scheme with the international jury. "It's a recipe for success, we've tried it on two out of three times we've won. And Alexander Rybak would have probably won anyway. I think it's a good idea to test the Norwegian taste against the international and to find a kind of lowest common denominator. Sweden had after some bad years in the late 2000s, achieved very good results internationally after they introduced international jury in 2011"

Stig Karlsen and MGP team are sure that road they now take will lead Norway all the way to the top. Although he can not guarantee that it will already happen next year. "We will get to the finals, and we shall win. Whether it happens in 2017, 2018 or 2019 - we'll see".

Ten countries will contribute a jury group to vote on the potential entries. They are Armenia, Finland, Ireland, Israel, Malta, United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, Hungary and Austria. The international jury will assess the ten entries based on the Eurovision classic point scale, 1-8, 10 and 12 points. The most popular song gets 12 points, and the least popular get 1 point. Each juror votes individually, points add up, and jury spokesman gives a result. The spokesman reveals only the country's favorite entry in the broadcast, but all points are included in the calculation when International and Norwegian votes are merged. Before Superfinal, international votes have a weight of 50%. The other half is made of Norwegian SMS votes. The international share is 580 points, and Norwegian votes will be distributed according to the percentages out of this figure. Top 4 entries qualify to the Superfinal, and then it is only SMS votes from Norway that will count. The one with the most SMS votes wins.

National final will take place on 11 March in Oslo Spektrum. Tickets for the show went on sale on 20 December at ticketmaster.

Line Elvsåshagen becomes new Melodi Grand Prix - NRK host alongside Kåre Magnus Bergh. "It's absolutely amazing, it's means there's no limit on how much glitter I can have on me", laughs Line. She has travelled around the world and became favourite of Norwegian TV viewers, now she gets a presenter job in Norway's largest music contest.

"It's amazing. I love MGP with all my heart. It is one of the best nights of the year. It definitely has the same status as Christmas Eve in my eyes", says Line adding that her favorite Eurovision entry is song of Moldova in Eurovision Song Contest 2009

Kåre Magnus is very pleased with his new colleague: "She's a weird, funny, talented and fearless energy bomb with pink hair who loves MGP. I am very excited to work with her, a cool lady with an infectious laugh", he says. Line is equally pleased to have Kåre Magnus at her side. "What would I do without Kåre Magnus? He is my safe haven in unsafe waters. I'm sure there will be lots of laughs and great atmosphere", she says.

Line thinks that MGP and Eurovision are important events that bind people across national borders: "I like the idea that in spite of conflicts and unrest, countries celebrate music and are rooting for each other. There is plenty of boring things in the world, we must celebrate fun and madness", she says. Kåre Magnus believes that it is important to have humour in MGP: "Of course we have to have good songs and music has to be taken seriously, but the important thing is positivity and fun. The humor and self irony is what separates MGP from other music competitions. It is important to hold on", he says.

The first item on the program is the presentation of this year's MGP artists and presenter couple is excited to showcase the top ten finalists in February. "I've got goose bumps several times and wanted to dance when I heard the songs. I am simply mega proud of what Norway has to offer this year!", Line says. Kåre Magnus agrees. "Yes, there is something for grandma and something for a teen. Here are the entries that could well catch it on in a European final. We go there for a win, don't we?".

On 07 February NRK held press conference to reveale participants in Melodi Grand Prix. The final will include everything from rock to country music and ballads. One of the returnees are Åge Sten Nilsen who competed in the band Wig Wam at the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv. This time he competes in the band Ammunation. Complete versions of participating entries will be presented on 15 February. 15 seconds extracts that were revealed at the press-conference can be heard here.

Среди артистов, с которыми он работал - Lence George, Skallebank, Clmd, Lali, Once Upon A Dead Man, Waikiki, Ole Stokke, Nicoline.

Но только благодаря проекту "Making A Hit" и песне "Grab The Moment", он смог сфокусироваться на своей собственной музыке и проекте JOWST.

Melody Grand Prix 2016.

Melodi Grand Prix.
