Bio

Carl Espen Thorbjørnsen was born in Bergen, Norway, in 1982. In English he calls himself Carl E. He is the oldest of three siblings, and grew up in a family with much love for music. Carl was raised by his mom, with his two siblings. They lived on an island outside Bergen, called Osterøy. Even though the island is not more than a 40 minutes drive from Bergen city, it is a very rural and idyllic place. Carl has always loved to spend time in the nature, and was a real fishing enthusiast as a boy. His mother sang a lot, and his childhood home was always filled with music.

Carl’s mother had a close relation to her sister, and her brothers in law. The extended family spent a lot of time together. Among cousins, aunts and uncles, you find the woman behind the song "Silent Storm", Carl’s cousin Josefin Winther. Four years younger than her cousin, Josefin has no problem recalling a day in her life being 12 years. Carl Espen had entered a local music competition on Osterøy, and Josefin was standing with her aunt in the audience. 17-years old Carl performed "Wild World" by Cat Stevens, and ended up winning the whole competition. Josefin was so proud. Since then Josefin has pursued her own career in music, and established herself as a critically acclaimed artist and songwriter. That fact that Josefin has followed her dream, has always been a big inspiration for Carl Espen.

As a young man Carl enrolled in the military, and served a half a year in Kosovo. In his grown-up life Carl became a carpenter, specializing in frames and glass. The last 12 years he has working in different companies within these industries. He has also done a lot of volunteer work for cancer research, and in the nighttime he has worked as a doorman at Bergen’s rock bar "Garage".

The music has always been a big part of Carl’s life, and he has carried his dream with him all along. Josefin has always thought that more people should hear his beautiful and unique voice, and August 2013 she finally sat down a wrote a song for Carl only. She saw that he had so much inside of him that needed to be expressed, and she wanted to give him the opportunity to express it through a song that was truly his own. The result was "Silent Storm". She played it for him and he knew instantly that this was his song. They decided to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, and the song was chosen for the Norwegian finals.

"Silent Storm" is an intense, fragile and powerful ballade, about searching for one’s place in the world. The song tries to describe this feeling that hits you when you have lived for a while, and you realize that you are not in the place you were hoping to be. That you haven’t found the place where you belong. Some people express their feeling, and some people keep them locked up in them selves. When you try to just live with them and to keep them locked up, it can perhaps feel as if you have a silent storm inside. Hence the title "Silent Storm".

For many years the songwriter Josefin Winther has collaborated with producer Magnus Åserud Skylstad. In 2013 they had a song in the competition performed by Hank, which was called "No One". This year’s ballade "Silent Storm" was arranged and produced by Magnus Skylstad, with lyrics and melody by Josefin Winther. Time has come for Carl Espen to show the people that he has a dream. And he feels that it's now or never. He knows that to perform "Silent Storm" properly, he needs to be 100% present in the words he is singing, and really dare to show that he is still hoping that "Someday I’ll be calm".

Interview

Our next guest at ESCKAZ.com is representative of Norway Carl Espen. "I feel extremely humbled, honored and proud. It is such a big declaration of trust and love to be voted to represent the country. It is a task I take very seriously", says Carl. At the Eurovision Song Contest he will perform song "Silent Storm" which he characterized as "a fragile, intense, genuine and powerful ballade about searching for one’s place in the world, and the hope that someday one will be calm". What is the story behind his participation?

"Well, it all started out with my cousin, Josefin Winther. She is an established artist and songwriter, and we know each other very well. She knew that I was carrying a dream inside of me, a dream about singing for people. She also saw that I had some difficult emotions, that I kept on my inside. She sat down to write a song, where I could express these feelings, and the result was Silent Storm. She says that she meditated over who I am a person, and then wrote the song. So it was especially written for me, first and foremost. After Josefin had showed me "Silent Storm", she suggested that I sing it, and that we send it to the preselections. I said yes immediately. I felt that this was something I could be proud of, and it truly represented who I was, especially on a personal level."

Carl, who still works in the glass company, says that he had to take numerous lessons with the vocal coach to get prepared first to MGP and now to Eurovision: "We have a warming up routine, where a lot of the focus is on the breathing, and really trying to "land" - stand steadily on the ground, and be present in the body. In a way it has many similarities to mindfulness. And then I try to seek into myself, and remember what I am singing about and why this is important to me". He adds that "the pressure is already enormous and being one of bookmaker’s favorite, doesn’t really change that. It flatters me, but more than anything it is inspiring and motivating".

"I am extremely happy with outcome reached at MGP, and that I managed to come this far. I am an inexperienced artist, and I have been working continuously since I was accepted with my singing technique. I still have a lot to learn, and I know I can improve even more as a singer before Copenhagen. What had helped me to win the most? It’s hard for me to say, but I what most people express that they like, is my voice, the song and it’s lyrics, and how I am as a person. I think people realize that this is important for me on a very personal level, and that I am not trying to be anything I’m not".

Regarding the Eurovision performance Carl confirms that he will have several musicians on the stage, but keeps the details for later. Carl already has been to Eurovision In Concert in the Netherlands and now is coming to London for another promo-event. "For me it is extremely exciting to meet fans, and the other artists and delegations. I have a lot of contact with my fans on social media, which I truly enjoy. Besides that, I try to take every opportunity to gain experience in performing, and these events are very good for me in that sense too", he says.

"My aim will be to sing the song, completely present in the message and the lyrics. If I manage to do that, I will be very happy with myself. I also strongly believe that people will recognize that I am genuinely singing the song, and hopefully people will feel moved by it. It really humbles me, when people say that they have been moved or touched by my song"

"The level is just so incredibly high", he says about the competition. "So many experienced artists, and great songwriters. It’s quite a company to be in. My personal favorites are Finland, and also Netherlands. I love the country feel to it"

Singer reveales his plans to release an album. "I have been in studio recording sketches for the following songs, and I can’t wait to show them to you. I will be bringing variety into my style, but Silent Storm is a very big part of my sound so far, and I am very proud of it. My next songs will definitely also have more uptempo stuff. My dream is also to record an album, and it might just look like that dream will come true!", he says.

We have also asked Carl about his tattoos, which are now integral part of his image, and this is what he had to say: "I have ca eight of them, including two roses on my shoulders, and two album titles. I tattooed "Grace" by Jeff Buckley because it really changed the way I relate to music. I tattooed "Cold Roses" by Ryan Adams, because it is one of the best albums I know of"

"I want to thank the readers and viewers of ESCKAZ for following me, and taking interest in who I am and what I do. I truly appreciate it, and it means so much to me, to know that you are there",

says Carl in the end of interview. You can read it's full version on our Facebook page

NRK1 will be airing it's preview show Adresse København for 4 weeks starting on April 26, 19:55. Show is hosted by Jenny Skavlan. Jury panel will include singer/songwriter Hanne Sørvaag, Datarock drummer Tarjei Strøm, journalist Ingeborg Heldal, singer/songwriter Jørn Hoel, songwriter and producer David Eriksen and MGP music director Vivi Stenberg. More information on the show will be announced shortly.

Since November last year, several times a week, Carl Espen is working with his vocal coach Live de Lange who polishes his vocal technique, reports Bergens Tidende.

"It will help me being more confident, to calm down nerves when performing on stage. Singing in front of 140 million people means a lot of pressure. So it is important the vocal technique is there. I'm starting to realize that I represent the whole Norwegian nation and not just myself. So the hours of work with vocal coach are completely decisive"

When NRK has received demo version of "Silent Storm" last fall, they liked both the song and artist, but were not convinced if he can deliver live. Thus Carl Espen, Josefin Winther and manager and Josefin's partner Kimberly Larsen proposed to make a vocal test. "We thought of him as a man who had potential, but there was a lot of inexperience and nerves. We were very, very unsure", says Mattias Carlson, stage director for the MGP. After a discussion Carl was given two weeks to practice and then come back and try again. Several hours of work with vocal coach, training in breathing techniques and numerous rehearsals, gave results. The feedback was very different, and NRK became confident enough to give it the go-ahead.

Now Carl and his coach are particularly the diction - how to pronounce words clearly and accurately. The ballad "Silent Storm" is almost a naked expression, only a piano and Carl Espen's voice move the whole song. In a competition where many of the participating countries are somewhat weak in English, the message of the song should be presented as clear as possible. All small details count in the battle for votes.

Live de Lange is impressed with Carl, and says he has evolved tremendously since he started taking lessons: "There's been a lot done in a short time. When Carl Espen came here, he was a typical voice artist who lacked a mature relationship with his own voice. He had developed many unusual practices that we had to get rid of". First of all she has noted that the vocalist works unsafe for his vocal, and started to correct it. Carl Espen had to learn to breathe differently, completely from scratch, so he is better able to keep on the air from the stomach.

"Carl Espen has still much to do, but he has a lot of potential. First and foremost, he has a very beautiful voice that fits the song he will perform at Eurovision"

Song has been written by Carl Espen's cousin, musician Josefin Winther. The title correctly reflects a state of mind. "For a long time Carl has been living with a dream to sing in front of many people. So I thought about what it would be needed for that to happen", says Winther. She usually lives in London, but has been following MGP closely. "I'm incredibly impressed by what he has done. It is so brave, and I know that it has costed him much to do this", says Winther. Carl Espen adds:

"The song has a very personal lyrics that many can recognize themselves in it. After MGP victory I've got fanmail from China, Australia and South America"

"It will be very special to play at the Garage. Party and concert at the same time", says Josefin Winther. This Friday she and her cousin Carl Espen will give a special performance in night club Garage in Bergen. The concert has been planned for months, and currently latest rehearsals are unerway. "It will be a good mix between slow songs and rock. I'll also play the new single of mine which I'm about to release", says Winther.

Josefin Winther wrote the winning song for Eurovision, and it's basically her concert. Carl Espen will appear as a special vocalist on some of the songs, and obviously will perform "Silent Storm". He has previously worked as a doorman at the Garage, but he has now taken a break from this job. "I've always wanted to play at the Garage myself. So I think it will be great fun", he says.

Winther thinks Carl Espen's victory in the MGP will draw some extra audience to the concert. "I wanted him to sing for the local folks, that's why I have invited him to be a special guest in the concert". She believes the two will continue to cooperate in the future. "I want to write more songs for him. Perhaps in conjunction with the album, but this is not decided yet", says Winther .

Carl Espen also appreciates the cooperation. "It will be very nice to have Josefin there. She has a strong relation to my MGP victory, and everything that comes with it", says Carl Espen Thorbjørnsen.

MGP Vivi Stenberg.

Music Norway
