Softengine is band from Seinäjoki, Finland made of 5 guys aged 16-19. The band was formed on a summer day in 2011, when Topi Latukka and Kasimir Kantonen have decided to proceed with the idea they have been brewing for some time in their minds. Eero and Ossi were immeditately asked to join in, completing the line-up. The early style of the band was alternative(indie)/rock/pop. The band has started activities moving to the studio, since Topi already had number of ideas for the tracks. In Autumn band also starts live performances and by the end of 2012 they gave about 30 gigs.

First self-produced single of Softengine came out in September 2011. Song "Endless Waterfall" becomes very popular in local circles. The self-published album follows up in February 2012, including 11 entries. In Spring band takes in several local competitions, most important from them being "Lions" in Jyväskylä Lutakko where they reached finals, and "Nuori Kulttuuri Sounds" in Turku.

In Autumn keyboardist Henri Oskár joins the band, since bringing new elements to the sound. In Summer of 2013 band gets opportunity to perform in "Mars", the biggest music event for indie-bands. After it another change in the line-up is made: founding member Kasimir Kantonen leaves, being replaced by Tuomo Alarinta. Band spends rest of Summer and Autumn in practices and preparation of a new music material.

The success of the band and long list of gigs they have played, made them a Finnish indie-stars. In January 2014 they have signed a multi-record deal with Sony Music. Lead singer Topi Latukka describes: "I was in my friend's house watching Breaking Badia, when I received a message from the record company's Facebook page. We were invited to a meeting to talk about future plans. We were all super excited just with a mere fact that a record company has demonstrated it's interest in us. We then went with the band to record few demos and after that Sony has proposed us a record deal.

It's an incredible feeling when you have been trying for many years to pursue a dream and made hard work for it without knowing whether you can really achieve anything, and then it finally happens".

The band aims to create originality mixing influences of Coldplay, Musea, Disco Ensemble, and 30 Seconds To Mars. "We want to catch our listeners with both acoustic and electronic elements. Constrasting themes and ideas of our songs will emphasize energetic and explosive dimensions", says Tomi Saarinen.

At the national preselection Softengine won both semifinal and final voting, getting 10 points from jury members Redrama, Aija Puurtinen and Tomi Saarinen, and 8 points from heavy metal singer Toni Wirtanen.

The decision to enter the UMK was made at the last minute and it took the boys ten days to finish their entry Something Better. It is composed by singer Topi Latukka and the lyrics are by Latukka and keyboardist Henri Oskár.

"We were jamming and playing funk at our training facility ten days before the deadline of the UMK. The next day at work it dawned on me that I could make a real song out the jam. I planned a chorus in my head and presented it to the others in the next practice. We tried a simplified version of the chorus and that turned everyone on. So we decided to forget about the funk part. We went to my grandparents' cottage to work on the lyrics. That and sauna bathing took a couple of days. After that we recorded, mixed and mastered a demo of the song. We finished it in the nick of time on the day of the contest deadline.

To cut a long story short, the lyrics are about an old man who reminisces about his life from childhood to the present day. He has always been dissatisfied with his life as it seems that he has never achieved anything and has not done anything out of the ordinary. In his old days his wife dies and he realises that what they had was "something better" than what he could have achieved and that he should have cherished the moment.

At the Eurovision Song Contest Softengine will concentrate on their strength, the irresistible live energy of a young rock band. The group looks forward to a unique experience and represents Finland with self-assurance. "We just go there and play a three-minute gig with full blast". Besides the Eurovision Song Contest, the boys will be busy recording their debut album and gigging through the summer. One of the high points is a concert in their hometown Seinäjoki at Provinssirock, one of the biggest and oldest rock festivals in Finland.

Read Q&A with the band
How did Softengine get started?
Three years ago me (Topi) and my friend decided to form an indie band. We asked fellow musicians to join us and went to my grandparents' cottage to create a mutual sound. After diligent songwriting, practising and gigging, the band found its present line-up in the summer of 2013.

Where does the name of the band come from?
We all think about things a lot, maybe even too much, and we wanted that to show in the name of the band in some way. We developed a “Softengine” stick figure, who instead of a head has a motor there. The word ”engine” stands for too much thinking and ”soft” for the gentle, aimless and philosophical nature of these considerations. All the lyrics in our songs are written from the standpoint of this figure.

How would you describe your music?
It is pop/rock with indie, prog and electric dance music influences.

What is the story behind ”Something Better”?
We had a funk jam in our training facility ten days before the deadline of the UMK, the Finnish Contest for New Music. The next day I got the idea to make a real song out of the jam. Topi planned a chorus in his head and presented it to the others in the next practice session. We tried a little simpler version of the chorus and it turned everybody on. We decided to leave the funk out.
Topi, Henri and Ossi then went to Topi’s grandparents' cottage to work on the lyrics. That and sauna bathing took a couple of days. After that we recorded, mixed and mastered a demo of the song. It was finished in the nick of time, on the deadline day of the contest. To cut a long story short, the song is about an old man who reminisces about his life from childhood to the present day. He has always been dissatisfied with his life as it seems that he hasn't achieved anything or done anything out of the ordinary. In his old days his then wife dies and that makes him realize that what they had was ”something better” than anything that he could have accomplished and that he should have always cherished the moment.

What was it like to win the UMK Contest for New Music?
It felt fantastic and unreal. We still sometimes forget what we have done.

What do you expect from the Eurovision Song Contest?
It will surely be a unique experience. We hope that we will get a lot of new listeners from abroad.

What is your relationship with the European Song Contest?
For many of us the Eurovision Song Contest has been a family event. The whole family has watched it together almost every year. Our own Eurovision favourite is Loreen's ”Euphoria”.

What does it mean to you to represent Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest?
It's a quite heavy responsibility. We have to do our job well, so that Finland can be proud of us.

What can we expect from Softengine's performance?
At least we will try to stand out from the rest of the field. We will play an energetic show and nothing too planned or theatrical. We just go and play a three-minute gig at full blast.

What can we expect from your forthcoming album?
It will be versatile as a whole and include interesting elements both in music and lyrics. At least there will be good songs, catchy melodies, ethereal sounds and contemplative lyrics.

What are your plans for 2014?
We will work on our debut album, practice a lot, plan the Eurovision performance and play gigs.

What is Softengine like on stage?
We don't use any background tapes, so we have to bring along dozens of various instruments which we use in many different ways. That makes the show interesting. We are also very energetic on stage and want to touch our audience.

What do you want to say to Eurovision fans all over the world?
Vote for us if you want a different kind of Eurovision winner. We would also like you to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Spotify. We value every fan!

Interview

Our next guests are representatives of a most rockish nation in the history of Eurovision - Finland, band "Softengine" which will be performing song called "Something Better" in Copenhagen.

Lead singer of the band Topi, explains their name: "We wanted a name that describes us as a band, so we created a character called “Softengine”. It is a stick figure whose head is replaced by a motor. It reflects a person who thinks too much". In the beginning of their career they took part at a local Lions Club band competition and won. "We like the competitions because we get honest feedback for what we do", says band members. So it was Topi again, who first had the idea to take part in UMK, the national Finnish Eurovision preselection.

"We had seen an announcement online about it. We voted within the band whether to take part or not, and 3 of 5 voted for taking part. We had 10 days time before the deadline to compose, write lyrics, arrange, mix and master the song. We got everything done the last day!"

"Ten days before UMK deadline we were jamming and playing funk at our training facility. The next day at work it dawned on me that I could make a real song out the jam. I planned a chorus in my head and presented it to the others in the next practice. We tried a simplified version of the chorus and that turned everyone on. So we decided to forget about the funk part. Me, Henri and Ossi went to my grandparents' cottage to work on the lyrics. That and sauna bathing took a couple of days. After that we recorded, mixed and mastered a demo of the song. We finished it in the nick of time on the day of the contest deadline".

"The lyrics are about an old man who reminisces about his life from childhood to the present day. He has always been dissatisfied with his life as it seems that he has never achieved anything and has not done anything out of the ordinary. In his old days his wife dies and he realizes that what they had was ”something better” than what he could have achieved and that he should have cherished the moment.

The understanding of the possibility of victory came only when jury has revealed their points at the national final, "I can’t remember much of that situation, it was so unexpected!", Topi says. Band members think that a good song and being different from other participants helped them to win the national final. Will it also bring them luck at the international Eurovision? "It would be great to make it to the final. That would be a great promotional concert", Topi says.

They went to the studio to improve the song a bit after the national final: "We worked on the chorus melody a little, paid attention to the pronunciation, added some details and made the overall sound a bit better". The stage performance will more or less remain unchanged. The music video for the song was shot at a horse track. "There was a small stage where we played the song a lot of times. It was really cold but lots of fun!"

"We are working on the album all the time. It will be very versatile, it shows that we are not just a rock band. I don’t know yet when we will get it finished, but we try to be as fast as possible"

The album is produced by Sony Music, and band are very thankful for their record label: "They have helped as a lot already, we would be lost without them!" Due to their busy schedule, band unfortunately will not have a time for the promotional tour. "I guess precontest promotion does matter as well, but the most important thing is how you perform at the Eurovision stage". However, Topi says he had a chance to listen to some of the entries taking part in the contest, and his favourites at the moment are Greece and Armenia.

"If you haven’t heard our song yet, you can go to our www.softengine.fi and check it out. We hope you like it! You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram"

Toni Wirtanen.

Apulanta
  • Redrama,
