Read detailed biography
His first appearance, which occurred 28 years ago, can be taken, tentatively, as the official beginning of an impressive musical career. In 1986 when he won the second place at the child festival "Our joy" in his native Podgorica, Sergej was only ten years old and he did not dream that he would become a pop star in future. His talent was noticed so he became one of the best students in piano classes, in the primary and as well in the secondary music school "Vasa Pavic". During the day, at school, he played Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and at night, at home, he played Peter Gabriel, Beatles, Joe Cocker .

Sergej was definitely “infected” with pop-rock sound, therefore three years later in 1989 his official musical career started with the band "Burning Heart" in which he played keyboard and sang back vocals. Five years later, in 1994, he sang in a full capacity in the band "Amphitheatre", where he began as a keyboardist and back vocal and he later became the lead vocal. Four years later, in 1998, Sergej begins his solo career with appearing at the summer pop festival "Sunny Skale" in Herceg Novi, where he sang the song "You were rose". Early in the new millennium, driven by his musical feeling, Sergej announced a new sound in our pop music.

His first album "Kristina" was published by "Goroton" in 2000. New musical tendencies, which were felt in the sound of his compositions, were accepted even prior to the official appearance of his CD. That summer at the prestigious Budva festival called "Song of the Mediterranean”, Sergej sang the song “ Hours, days, years” and he received applause by the audience and the critics. In addition to the above mentioned song , the following songs "I will stop the time", "Wake me up", "City" were on the first album made by the author himself who set a "new sound" so the songs won all the charts and became the most popular songs of the year. Carried by the good wind and feeling that his musical formula is verified by the enormous number of fans of the new pop sound, two years later, in 2002 Sergej released his second studio album "Be like water", published by "Goroton".

With his performances in 2003 at the Mediterranean Festival in Budva where he sang "I exist as well ", which is still the ultimate hit, and a year later at the festival "Eurovision – Euro song Monte Negro " where he sang "I can not forgive you" he confirmed the position of its musical direction. Next year, in 2005, he released his third studio album "When you need it" published by the record company "City records." This album break all records, both in circulation and the audience: songs "Look into the darkness", "Damn you "," The ring on the table " for two years were in the top of the charts in all the countries of former Yugoslavia.

With his fourth album, "Half of my world" published in 2007 by “City Records”, Sergej Cetkovic definitely placed his music disc into the history of pop music in the Balkans. The fifth CD "2 minutes" published by “City Records” and “Aquarius Records” was released in the year when this well known musician celebrates a decade of work on Balkan music scene. After ten years of professional career singer and composer Sergej Cetkovic can boast the success of the artist and the businessman, the qualifications for top pop star. This fact supports figures, which are related to album sales (CD), visitors at concerts or any other parameter that is taken into account when the music industry is concerned.

His income statement, however, is divided into four categories:
1. Music
2. Discography
3. Concert
4. Media

1) Music balance of his success is reflected in the review of the beginning of his career (2000) when the Balkan music scene shook the new pop standard. To mention a few ultimate hit songs, some of which are already several established itself as "eternal songs":

"Hours, days, years" (CD "Kristina")
"There I exist " (Music Festival - Budva 2003).

"You are happy, I know” (CD "Be my water")
"I don’t want to know" (CD "When you need it")

"Sorry" (CD "Half of my world")
"Two minutes" (CD "2 minutes")
"Know that you are mine" (CD "2 minutes")

2) Discography balance is reflected in the fact that Sergej Cetkovic, after five published CD, is one of the best-selling authors in the Balkans. So far, the data of his discography houses show he sold almost a million CDs and cassettes. With record sales (in 2006), boasts the album "When you need it," which was sold in more than 100 thousand copies. However, the CD "2 minutes", whose sales are in progress, for now, according to unofficial data, record labels, is breaking all records. We will mention the fact that the DVD with concert footage from the Centre "Sava" (from 2006) was sold in over 50 thousand copies.

3) Concert balance will be quite impressive if you name just a few exact data on the tickets sold and the number of visitors who have seen and heard Sergej: in the past nine years, according to unofficial sources, both on concert tours and performances of any kind, Sergej was seen and heard more than half a million people.

The first official concert tour "When you need it" (2005) was followed by the more than 100 thousand visitors. Let us mention some performances: three related concerts, held at Belgrade's Sava Center, watched by nearly 12 thousand people, then Podgorica concert which was attended by six thousand, seven thousand in Budva, Nis with six thousand and Novi Sad five thousand. The second major solo tour, which has almost lasted nearly ten months, saw close to two hundred thousand people. His name is not linked to a single affair, which in today's era of "pistol" journalism is a great success.

"a ballad, a love song, dedicated to everyone who can find the message in it, and find a part of their own story in the song"

Sergej also promised that "it would be a simple stage performance, as I want the song to speak for itself" and he will record his entry in several European languages, among them English, French and Italian. It is expected that Montenegrin entry will be presented on 9 March along with accompanying music video. In it's recording took part numerous performers, alongside with producers and arrangers Marko Milatović and Vladan Popović.

Interview

For many years Sergej Ćetković's name was mentioned in connection with a possible participation at Eurovision. It is not strange since he is one of the current top performers, known and appreciated in the whole ex-Yugoslavia and beyond. In fact, during the Eurovision in Belgrade in 2008, his CD/DVD package was one of the things ESCKAZ team has purchased to enjoy at home.

"Eurovision is a demanding and serious festival. For the past several years I have been on a concert tour promoting my latest CD "2 minutes" therefore I did not have time to devote serious preparations for the Eurovision Song Contest. Six months ago we agreed with the leaders of RTCG and here we are on the same mission. Currently I am preparing for the performance in Copenhagen. It is a huge commitment and we are doing our best as we want our performance to be as good as possible",

says Sergej. He confirmes that the song "Moj svijet" (My world) will be performed at Montenegrin language, as all comments of my audience and comments all those to whom my music will be introduced for the first time go in favor of the final decision. The truth is that song sounds very good in English, however to me and my audience, more emotional and convincing is our version, which we will perform in Copenhagen". Besides English, song will also be recorded later in other languages: "It is also possible that one day I record the song in Russian. Saying that, I want to add that I will soon finalize the negotiations with a young Russian singer Alexander Arakelov to whom I will assign the rights of my song "Ring on the table" which he will sing and will be included on his CD. Speaking about the song itself Sergej says:

"I'm an author... I write the lyrics and record the music for twenty years. Tracks are made in a different ways ... Writing them at night, sometimes in a every day situations such as in the car, in a caffee bar, while watching TV. As soon as I get my ideas and hear the tone I immediately whilstle or sing it in my recoderder. After that, all of us elaborate it in a studio and that is the way how I create my compositions. It is difficult for an author to interpret his songs. The world around me I see in a different, special way. I try not to simplify the song, the lyrics as I do not want phrases but true emotions that I share with my audience".

"These days, I believe that your readers have an opportunity to hear composition titled "Moj Svijet" and "My Love", which we will perform in Copenhagen. The reactions of the audience throughout the region and the messages coming from different parts of the world , at least what came to me , that the reactions were overwhelmingly positive . We recorded a video in a few exotic locations - from the Skadar Lake, along Ulcinj, Bar until Zabljak - the biggest praise came just from a few people in these places where we were shooting . And they asked: "Where is this beauty?“ We recorded in Montenegro, which was virtually untouched nature that we all need to discover", Sergej say.

"We are still working on the stage performance... For sure, it will not be a performance with some fireworks... It will be discreet because I want the music and the song itself to be at front"

Sergej's aim for the contest is to get into the finals. "I know it's modest, but my composition is good and carries a sincere emotion and I hope that the audience worldwide will recognise it". He will be presenting the song in Amstredam on 5th April and in London on 13th April at the biggest fan gatherings, as well as using the opportunity to meet there representatives of press. "So far I heard only the song of Tijana Dapčević, representative of Macedonia. Unfortunatelly l had not have a chance to hear the others but I believe it will be a lot of quality tunes. Eurovision Song Contest was in one moment in a crisis but the situation began to improve".

"Actually, I'm not a typical example of the festival singers and authors. Although, frankly, festivals give opportunity for young singers and composers to appear in public, personally, I do not like competitions. I do not see the festival as a competition, but as the promotion of my music. I've taken part in 1998 at the music festival in Herceg Novi. I grew up with the most important festival in the world - San Remo. I followed of course Eurovision all these years. Two years ago I had an opportunity to be in the audience and I really enjoy the ESC in Baku. Organization of the festival and stage effects really deserves appreciation. A lot of good songs in recent years were born on ESC. Like I said before, any stage performance can not last longer than the song itself and I always vote for good quality song with a strong message. Loreen, in my opinion was the greatest refreshment to the ESC and I mention Zeljko Joksimovic from Serbia who is always up to the task. I've thought about whether I would be able to answer this challenge. I do not doubt myself, at least when it comes to music, but in all that follows this great musical event. Watching my competitive spirit, maybe I should not have to sign up, bearing in mind that like any competition, except with yourself, which is perhaps the most difficult discipline".

Currently, Sergej is working on his 6th album. So far two songs from it have been presented: "Because of us" and "I still love you". The album will be finished next year. "Everyone has their own style. I grew up with San Remo. In Montenegro, we all wathced RAI UNO and so their music is close to us. I believe that I was "infected" by that sound since childhood and I became the author of sound simmilar to Italian pop sound rather than the Balkan’s sound", says Sergej and names such artists as Zucchero, Sting, Joe Cocker as well as Oliver Dragojevic, Gibboni as his influences.

"I greet all the readers and all people of good will. See you in Copenhagen at the Eurovision Song Contest"

This week has brought an intensification of preparations for this year's Eurovision Song Contest for Macedonian entrant Sergej Ćetković. He was occupied on three fronts. After visit from Eurovision team from Denmark, which is responsible for recording of the postcardthe time has come to start the filming of official music video of Sergej and finalize the track itself.

"Wish of my team was that short postcard that these year are made within a series "My country, my flag", we record in Cetinje, on the recognizable Montenegrin scenery. Coincidentally, this city always is somehow 'skipped' when he recorded Eurovision postcard, so we decided to correct this "injustice",

says representative of Montenegro. "I am very pleased with the scenes we filmed, and the final version of the video we will watch on 6th of May", he says to Montenegrin RTCG Portal.

But there was no time for a break. At the very same time as in Belgrade, in a music studio, the song that will represent Montenegro at the contest was being finalized and in several cities of Montenegro started recording of the music video for the entry.

"My part in the studio has ended. Song has been recorded in two languages. It will have English version that will be interesting to listeners across Europe, and soon we will decide which one I will sing at the competition. These days are recorded backing vocals and they will be doing the final mix. At the same time, we've started recording of the music video, produced by RTCG and also by my colleagues from previous projects".

He adds that director and cinematographer Alexander Kerkeres is very enthusiastic on locations that he and producer Ivan Djurovic have proposed. "For the locals this is all very entertaining, and we find exceptional hospitality. Recording has started in Karuči and this will be a nice promotional video from Montenegro for Europe, precisely on the eve of the start of the tourist season," says Sergej.

It was announced that in the coming days recording will be made in Žabljak, in Bar and Ulcinj. As stated by performer, promotion of the song and the video will start soon. "We want to get a pack of an audio and video version of the song, and we will present them to the public at the same time. This will happen in the first half of March on RTCG and later on other digital platforms", explained Sergej.

Sergej Ćetković ends recording of his contest entry in RTV Pink studio in Belgrade. Large number of musicians, as well as producers and arrangers Mark Milatović and Vladan Popović are taking part in the recording.

"I was really pleased to respond to the invitation of the RTCG director Rade Vojvodić and it is an honour that I will represent Montenegro in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. I'm trying to justify the trust in me and to make a good song that will be noticed and will carry me to the finals. The idea of the song has been around for several months, and now it is developed. I'm author of my entry myself. These days most of the time we spend working on the concept of the song and the selection of instruments to record it. My team and I have followed closely what happens on the European music scene and we would like to record a song in as many languages as possible to better introduce it to the audience in Europe. I can say that I am very satisfied with the working version already getting serious form of the track, which sounds equally strong in both English and the local language. I expect it will be presented at the end of February - the audience will have the opportunity to hear the song and see the premiere of music video. I would not like to rush it out - everything has to be carefully done", says Sergej Ćetković in an interview to Hello Magazin.

"In performance I will stay myself. I do not want to change myself to the point of becoming unrecognizable to my own audience. On the other hand, we want to adapt staging to the festival and add a dose of theatricality, which is expected at Eurovision. I hope the audience will like what we are creating these days. As I'm still in the stage of the composition of the song, which I consider the most important, then when it is finished we will proceed to the selection of people who will be on stage with me. My biggest problem is that every project I realize too seriously, so I am literally involved in every part of the preparations. Though I prefer the creative part of it, because it is the best environment, which suits me. Anyway, for me there is no rest until everything is over.

Although my work requires many trips, I have not had the opportunity to visit Denmark before. I have many friends there who invite me to be their guest, and many of our people live in Copenhagen, and there will be an opportunity to visit them. This will be my first trip and I will try to find enough time to visit the city and its attractions. I still remember my visit of Eurovision in Azerbaijan as special guest. It was one of the most beautiful journey I've had so far . We were guests of the first lady of Azerbaijan, like most public figures from the former Yugoslavia, who were invited as guests in Baku. We enjoyed unprecedented hospitality and phenomenal host organization. Our guide, Mr. Faik, made all efforts that the stay in Baku remains in good memory. We had the opportunity to watch the entire festival live in VIP lounges and in the end we were full of impressions and given also farewell gifts and souvenirs".

"Насколько я знаю, на сегодня слушатели уже могут услышать как черногорскую, так и английскую версию песни "My Love".

На сегодняшний день из него представлены две песни: "Because of us" и "I still love you".

Hello Magazin.
