The Shin ("coming home" from Georgian) are: Zaza Miminoshvili (guitars, panduri, songs), Zurab J. Gagnidze (bass, vocals, songs), Aleksandre Chumburidze (dance, doli) and Mamuka Gaganidze (vocals, percussion, songs). The Shin formed in 1998 in Germany, where Zaza Miminoshvili and Zurab Gagnidze have been living since 1994. Mamuka Gaganidze joined the band in 2002. In their native Georgia these musicians are acclaimed among the country’s most elite composers and musicians.
The Shin’s "instrumental theatre" is the sound of Georgia’s musical encounter with the world. In The Shin’s music Georgian-style vocal pyrotechnics, intricate polyphony and instrumental virtuosity meets jazz scat, funk and fusion, flamenco, Ravel and Shakti. Sophisticated, surprising, hip, humorous, and always exhilarating – even at its most sensitive - The Shin’s celebratory musical dialogues know no bounds.

Members of The Shin have composed original works for productions at the Tbilisi State Theatre and for film, television and radio programs in their native Georgia and around the world. They have collaborated internationally with artistic greats like Gia Kancheli, Robert Sturua, Jorge Pardo, Giora Feidman, Chaka Khan, Randy Brecker, Okay Temiz, Theodossii Spassov and many others.

In the last few years The Shin launched several outstanding projects and albums – EgAri (2006), Es ari (2009), Black Sea Fire (2009), created new band in Stuttgart (Open World Project). The musicians participated in numerous festivals in more than 30 countries. In 2009 they received the first place award in the German World Music Contest Creole.

Mamuka Gaganidze (Vocals, percussion)
His parents said that, already at the ripe age of three, Mamuka would spend hours lost in song—he could perform nearly every popular Georgian tune on cue. Mamuka himself recalls frequently performing in front of the mirror in his childhood, imagining a full auditorium and the applause of a captive audience. At the age of six Mamuka began to study the piano and was invited to join the children’s vocal-instrumental ensemble “Nergebi” [The Saplings]. The ensemble toured in Georgia, Russia – the whole of Europe. Determined to start their own band, Mamuka and his friends raised money for guitars and equipment and began to play in the streets, at parties—anywhere they could find an audience. After pursueing a musical career even while he was in the army Mamuka began to study at the Tbilisi State University, first Oriental studies, then cinematography, finally graduating in law. In the 1990s Mamuka met up with his friend Zaza Marjanishvili, who was obsessed with jazz and infected Mamuka with the bug. They founded a quartet which quickly found popularity. Everything went well until 1993, when Zaza emigrated to America and the group fell apart. In Georgia civil war had broken out. Now there was neither room for ideas, nor the opportunity to realize them - the circumstances were grim. But on one otherwise dark, hopeless day, Mamuka received a phone call that would change the course of his life. It was Zaza Miminoshvili, one of the leaders of the Adio group. Zaza invited Mamuka to join the band as a vocalist. At that time Adio was a legend, and to join the band was the dream of many musicians.
And so in 1996 Mamuka found himself in Germany, where Adio was based. During his tenure with Adio Mamuka first realized that in music it was possible, indeed, necessary, to find his own voice, and not to feel compelled to imitate other musicians. Indeed, the musicians of Adio had achieved a rare synthesis of Georgian traditional music and contemporary forms. The ensemble performed at festivals and recorded an album. But precisely at the moment when Adio seemed to be taking off toward a tremendously promising future, it fell apart at the seams. In 2002 Mamuka was invited to join The Shin, which had been founded by Adio members Zaza Miminoshvili and Zurab Gagnidze. Mamuka contributes to The Shin as a vocalist, percussionist and composer. He has played a vital creative role in all of the ensemble’s projects to date.

Zaza Miminoshvili (Guitars, composition)
Zaza was born to a family of writers, mathematicians and artists. At a young age he was already spending hours at the neighbor’s piano, absorbed in his own musical tales and directing an invisible orchestra - all of his own will. His formal musical studies began much later, at the age of fourteen, when his mother first took him to guitar lessons. Several months later he began to play in several ensembles at school, performing western popular music. He enrolled as a mechanical engineering student at Tbilisi State University, then as a Ph.D. student, afterwards he received a Humboldt fellowship for post-graduate work in Germany. But all this was secondary to Zaza. Even in his student years, music came first. Zaza began studying classical guitar with the real master Vladimir Giorgadze, later Zaza studied jazz with Lavrenti Jinch’aradze. In 1990 Zaza and Zurab founded the group Adio. This was the culmination of a long search for a compelling synthesis of traditional Georgian and contemporary music. In 1993 Adio was invited to record an album and tour in Germany; the musicians remained there for several months. Zaza stayed in Germany, where he still lives and works today, gaining invaluable experience as a performer on western stages and working with world-renowned musicians. In 1998 Zurab and Zaza formed the duet The Shin. Vocalist-percussionist Mamuka Gaganidze joined them in 2000. As a member of The Shin Zaza has taken part in numerous international projects and festivals, led seminars on polyrhythm, polyphony and improvisation theory, and shared stage bills with greats Jorge Pardo, Randy Brecker, Giora Feidman and many others.

The Shin launched their latest project, “EgAri,” in 2005. In Georgian, “EgAri” means “that’s it!” For Zaza and Zurab this was the result of many years of experimentation and creative thinking about Georgian traditional music. The project required that Zaza and Zurab work meticulously with musical material, trying at once to preserve its originality and instill it with a fresh sound. This is Zaza and Zurab’s perspective on tradition in general, and on how to ideally practice it not only for an elite circle, but for young and old, for Georgians and for people from many countries who, just now finding out that a country called Georgia exists, respect and even love it thanks to the music of The Shin. Since January 2009, Zaza has been playing a new, unique guitar called JaZZ. This guitar was created respecting Zaza’s special requests by the young luthier.

Zurab J. Gagnidze (Bass, vocals)
They say that Zurab began singing at the age of three. Actually, he didn’t have much choice - almost everyone in his family sang. Zurab could stand listening, transfixed, for hours. He could recognize nearly all the album covers and knew all the best-loved melodies by heart. When he was ten years old, Zurab began to study voice with one of his grandmothers, a Georgian song enthusiast. Zurab spent several months studying with a prominent rock guitarist, and then switched to bass. In the tenth grade he formed his first band. They covered Deep Purple and the Beatles, then when the first jazz-rock bands appeared, they fell in love with Chicago. Zurab enrolled as a student of information technology at Tbilisi’s Polytechnic Institute. The university was rich with musical and artistic life: Each year the Institute held an inter-faculty music festival; nearly every faculty had its own ensemble. Zurab took part in the festival beginning in his fourth year, as a member of the Institute’s big band. Zurab was later invited to play bass in the university ensemble Khomli, whose repertoire included original compositions based on Georgian traditional music. Zurab graduated from the university with honors and began graduate studies in London. One fine day, guitarist Zaza Miminoshvili suggested Zurab that they play together. That moment initiated a long friendship and creative collaboration between these two musicians, and they started to work together in the group Adio. A tour to Germany with that very group ended up lasting till today for Zurab, where he later also joined The Shin.

Alexander Chumburidze
Alexander Chumburidze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia on May 29, 1979. His longing for music and Georgian national dance at an early age determined his interests in life. He started attending dance studio Orbi in 1988. In 1994 he entered the Tbilisi Zakariadze Culture College. Starting 1997 Alexander joined ensemble Erisioni and participated in well-known shows such as The Legend of Tamar and Georgian Legend. Alexander participated in various shows and plays. In 2003 he discovered his interest in pantomime, being invited by mimodrama theatre. In 2008 Alexander founded the ensemble Samaya, where he acted as a stage choreographer and dancer as well. Alexanders has been the member of The Shin since 2009.

Eurovision Song Contest 2014 entry has been selected internally by Georgian broadcaster GPB. Sophie Gelovani and Nodiko Tatishvili, participants of Eurovision 2013, have revealed names of Georgian representatives at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest, on February 4 at 12:00 CET in the Assembly Hall of GPB.

Stage performance and video clip for The Shin & Mariko will be directed by Tamar Photskhishvili (Artist; Designer) and Basa Photskhishvili (Filmmaker).

On February 24 it has been revealed that the title of Georgian entry will be "Three Minutes To Earth" (composed by Zaza Miminoshvili on lyrics of Eugen Eliu with arrangement done by band members).
"It describes the last three minutes of a long walk back to Earth, back home. The song is about feelings and thoughts you have when you return, and it also tries to answer the question how the earth sounds at the moment",

singers explained to Eurovision.tv. In their song folk meets modern music, mixed with country and even quotes from Bach. As the lyrics, vocals and instruments are the core parts of their Eurovision entry, the musicians are keeping the natural sound of it in the studios without applying too many technical changes - it almost sounds like a live performance. Speaking about their plans for the Eurovision stage act they mention three key words: "Sky, wings, and deceleration".

The group and its creative team have set out to give the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 a new and cutting-edge pulse. They are convinced that this Contest as a major event of international understanding should follow the increasingly loud call for sustainable musical quality. For it’s the only way by which the wonderful symbiosis of cultural diversity and harmony of the European idea may become a sustainable constant of artistic and human interaction. And only in this manner the Eurovision Song Contest will be able to steadily persist during the century.

"Shin" means "home" in Georgian. "Three Minutes To Earth" stands for the homecoming of humans. Homecoming. Homecoming into a peaceful world. Homecoming into a green world. Homecoming to good music. Homecoming to the own self. And because all of this will only be possible in one way, "Three Minutes To Earth" stands for the idea and the desire for deceleration. At the same time - because it's music happening here - "Three Minutes To Earth" combines the unique Georgian cultural individuality with catchy jazz-rock and well- tempered pop elements, allowing a Johann-Sebastian-Bach quote in the middle of the creative arc. The overarching Georgian good-wish "MRAVALJAMIER" appears as an additional sympathetic vibration. In addition to the musical perspective "The SHIN & Mariko" already offer by means of their congenial cooperation within this project the one and very important intergenerational perspective of togetherness. The goal: "The SHIN & Mariko" and "Three Minutes To Earth" want to bring the Eurovision 2014 Cup to Georgia. Home. SHIN.

Interview

Our next guests are extraordinary musiciants from Georgia Mariko Ebralidze and band The Shin. First of all, we've asked the Shin to explain, how they were chosen by the Georgian broadcaster for the Eurovision. "We think that the Georgian Public Broadcasting (GPB) has taken an exceptionally enterprising decision for Georgia’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. The GPB opted for internal selection and decided to ask us and Mariko if we would take on this responsibility. It must have had to do with our current positioning in the music scene. We felt honored to represent Georgia and simply said "Yes".

It is the first collaboration between The Shin and Mariko. "Of course we knew Mariko since quite some time from different events, like group concerts. And we have always appreciated her great voice as well as her comprehensive onstage professionalism. So we immediately found this merger especially exciting!". Mariko adds that she has received a proposal from Eurovision producer of GPB Mamuka Megrelishvili to join the project just few hours before the press-conference. "I got this amazing offer and was shocked with their decision", she says. "I was nervous before my first meeting with The Shin, we wanted the song as we dreamed and wished it to be and finally we got exactly the song that we would like to present for Europe"

"Shin" means "home" in Georgian. And "Three Minutes To Earth" stands for the homecoming of humans into a peaceful world, a green world with good and culturally committed music. It should be like homecoming to your own self. In our days all this can only be achieved when lead by a firm idea and great desire for deceleration"

Mariko explains that the "meaning of the song is coming back home, home which is connected to our missing emotions and flashbacks. I feel strength and joy in it. It reminds me the best feelings ever. We would like to say that Wherever you’re - come back home!"

"If we will break into our intimate moments of creativity - There was since long a kind of pending musical concept about "air and flying" jointly pursued with Eugen Eliu, a close friend and fellow whom we appreciate very much as a composer and lyricist too. Beyond this, Felix Baumgartner and his space jump from the stratosphere carried out in 2012 came to our mind: "I’m going home...". Now we decided to venture this epochal space jump too. However artistically, musically and with a different purpose - the deceleration of humans. And we are "The Shin", the homecoming. Thus everything fitted together at once! Eugen is very good in several languages. We asked him if he would support us with the English lyrics for the Eurovision song. And were very pleased when he agreed. So Zaza composed the music, Eugen wrote the lyrics and The Shin made the musical arrangement in every detail. Oh yes - and Johann Sebastian has kindly contributed a little..."

The band says that despite their music is not very Eurovision typical, "the chances to bring Georgia and good music sustainable closer to a very large audience surpassed the risks by far. We for sure don't make music mainly to win contests. But we received, in recent years too, some nominations and awards. For example in Latvia a "1st Award for Outstanding Implementation of National Latvian music", in Georgia for "Best Music Production 2013," in Germany the 1st Place at the "German World Creole Music Contest 2009". We were on the road for the last few years in more than 30 countries, on festivals and contests..."

"First and foremost, we aim to provide heartbeat music and a good stage show for an excellent audience. Our gift, so we hope, should be accepted by the great community of music lovers. As a consequence we'd like to bring the EUROVISION Cup to Georgia, SHIN".

When noted by ESCKAZ that the song has a very special structure, and may be the band should consider to release a long version of the track, The Shin have responded: "When you're making the space jump, you know no more difficulty! Nevertheless, we are certain to publish at least one enhanced version of the piece yet. Musical and textual details are already in the drawer". There will be no rework of the song for Eurovision though: "We stand by our concept and think that the allowed three minutes within the contest are best served. We would only wish the music lovers more of it, but that might come with the next version".

"I think the performance of our entry will be very different and exciting. Also it must be very fascinating for everyone, I hope. As for secrets, everything will be revealed only on the 8th of May", says Mariko. Band The Shin have only again highlighted three keywords "sky, wings and deceleration" as an idea of their stage presentation directed by Tamar and Basa Potskhishvili, adding "Our wonderful audience in the great hall as well as in front of the millions of TVs should look forward with anticipation to our performance..."

"The shooting of the music video for our song "Three Minutes To Earth" took place in an hangar of Natakhtari Airfield. It was exciting for each of us to count the myriad of down floating feathers while acting. Our results were always different, ha-ha-ha...", joke band members. Mariko adds: "It was an amazing unstoppable 12 hours of filming. I was so excited and it was absolute pleasure to work with Basa and Tamriko, who were directors and designers of video. I was a bit tired but this is the job I love and I’m inspired with it so the whole procees was just incredible".

The band is not planning any European promotional appearances. Mariko says: "Unfortunately, we still have some job to do, so we have no time for the promotional tours. I think the first impression from the stage performance by televiewers is far more important than live concerts in various countries before the main Eurovision". The Shin add: "We - who do not belong by origin to the so-called "Big Five" and first have to pass a semi-final - want to trust the fact that music quality performed on the big stage will be decisively at last".

The next project for The Shin besides Eurovision - a release in Western Europe of the album "Extraordinary Exhibition", recorded last year in the large cast with the Symphonic Orchestra of Tbilisi. Band is also working with Eugen Eliu together on a joint project called "ROSE-O" in German language. Whether we may expect more of The Shin and Mariko together? She says: "I'm anyway getting huge experience from even one time collaboration, but of course I would like to continue work with The Shin because fans all over Europe would want to listen something more from us for sure". The Shin agree: "The excellent result of our first collaboration encourages us to the idea of further joint projects. We're checking out all possibilities"

"The Shin & Mariko" will do their best in Copenhagen. We think that music lovers will love our song. People who like to hear music might learn to love our song. Simply come home to yourself and VOTE 4 MUSIC ON MAY 8 ... AND MAY 10. For Georgia with love.

"I am ready for any step forward, any experiment", says Mariko Ebralidze in an interview to Sana.ge.

Singer says that invitation from Georgian broadcaster came as shock to her. Without any prior negotiation, she was surprisingly called and informed that she and The Shin will go to Eurovision. She also admits, that she has never collaborated with The Shin before, only met them several times at group concerts.

She will try to incorporate in Eurovision all the experience she got participating in local version of "Stars Academy", when she had to spend 3 months in a closed space preparing with other contestants for the musical journey, though admits that Eurovision is of a much bigger scale.

Currently, the work on the song has already started, it will be written by the musicians themselves. Performers are having "Skype" sessions discussing and exchanging ideas.

Mariko says though that there are some elements of politics in the contest, but she still has big expectations of her Eurovision performance. She is confident that they will get great folk-inspired entry, which will appeal to European viewers and her ambition is to win Eurovision for Georgia. But most important, is to show real Georgian culture to the audience. For that her outfit will certainly be loaded with ethnic elements, and whole performance should have a Georgian traditional feel.

The Shin & Mariko will start recording of Georgian Entry Song in music studio Scb-music in Stuttgart, Germany, on February 20/21. Mariko will depart for Stuttgart, Germany on February 19.

It has been earlier revealed that stage performance and video clip for The Shin & Mariko will be directed by experienced sisters Tamar Photskhishvili (Artist; Designer) and Basa Potskhishvili (Filmmaker).

GPB's Eurovision producer Natia Uznadze has responded to critics about Georgian choice for Eurovision 2014 speaking to Ambebi.ge.

"It is difficult to talk about chances now. "Eurovision " is a contest in which we can not calculate in advance. But it is a television show with a 300 million audience, so the most important part of it is promotion of participating musicians of their own country. The choice of Mariko and "The Shin" was made by Public Broadcaster of Georgia because the group is well known in Europe, they are promoting Georgian folk songs overseas combining them with jazz elements.

There are many opinions of many different people out there. It is easy to criticize. May be we should adapt Eurovision slogan "Join Us" and refer from criticism? Join us and support Georgian entry, since it is not only the project of "Channel 1", but they will represent a whole Georgia. Even though a healthy criticism is very much acceptable, at the moment we have no song, no scenography, no costumes yet, but only names of the performers, criticism is a bit premature. participants and named prior criticism is premature. People say Mariko doesn't fit the Eurovision format, but what is the Eurovision format? There is no such thing.

We will be looking for the support of Georgian diaspora living abroad, and for support of national juries, who this year for the first time, will be named in advance. We estimate a good chance that juries will like our entry.

Already these days Mariko is discussing with "The Shin" via Skype the elements of their future work, since the group resides in Germany. As soon as they have finished the composition, Mariko will travel to Germany to record song together. Later, they will arrive for 10 days to Georgia and will also have a busy work schedule".

You can also watch video of Natia Uznadze interview to morning program of GPB here.

Mariko Ebralidze will in a few days travel to the German city of Stuttgart, where in several weeks she will record a song together with "Shin". No foreign composers will be involved in creation of the Georgian entry this year. Shooting of a joint video clip, directed by Kakha Bukhrashvili, will begin in Georgia afterwards.

The Shin)

"Three Minutes To Earth" выступает за возвращение на родину людей. Цель: "The Shin & Mariko" и "Three Minutes To Earth" хотят привезти Евровидение в Грузию. Shin.

Sana.ge.
