Rykka (Christina Maria Rieder) was born in Vancouver on 13 March 1986, she has Swiss ancestors and comes from a musical family. She grew up in a small suburb of Vancouver (Canada) called Surrey. Her father was all the time listening to the classic rock radio, while her mother always remembered her jazz choir years, and was teaching Rykka and her two siblings first music lessons. Rykka's grandfather was from Switzerland and migrated to Canada to set up a beautiful Swiss Bakery, he also played a big part in the Swiss Society of Vancouver. That's where she had her first performance with my brother and sister when she was 9. With her first salary as the restaurant chain, she bought a saxophone and a guitar. At 16 she took the first guitar lessons and began to compose music. Later she went on to attend College majoring in Jazz voice for 2 years, leaving before receiving her diploma. From here, Christina became a full time busker and also enrolled into part-time College for Drawing, Painting and Print. At that time, in 2006, she has recorded her debut release "Reason". With savings earned from busking, she left for Asia on a 4 1/2 month solo journey, receiving lessons in both India (Hindustani Vocals) and Bali (Gamelan Percussion). Equipped with her guitar, Christina composed her next album, and thus, "Stars & Satellites" was born in 2008.
In 2009, she moved to Toronto to record her third release. The album was produced with the help of several Canadian producers such as Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother) and Ryan Dahle (Limblifter, Hot Hot Heat) in Vancouver, in Calgary with Russell Broom (Jan Arden), David Baxter in Toronto and Stephan Ritch in Montreal. In 2010, her album "Straight Line" was released in Switzerland under Little Jig Records. In 2011 she had released "Tide You Over", a compilation of works created in between albums, co-writes, B-sides and acoustic versions. Rykka's passion to perform is evidenced by her always-on-the-go lifestyle. From part time homes in Vancouver, BC and Zurich, Switzerland, to coffee shop gigs, to festivals, to the international clubs of Geneva and Berlin, Rykka is on a tenacious quest to bring her music to the audiences of the world. She's already played over 500 shows in her young career, including the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival, Squamish Valley Music Festival, and Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, Germany, as well as a tour of The Netherlands.
Change is a constant for the multitalented songwriter, who started as an acoustic folk artist under her name Christina Maria before reinventing herself as Rykka and emerging with an alternative pop bang. Since then, her restless ambition has driven her underground where she has been writing feverishly using keyboards and drum machines. She has split her time between Switzerland and Canada, sometimes traveling to Los Angeles and London for co-writing sessions. She has been on a wild ride since the release of her 2013 album Kodiak. With Kodiak — her fourth album but first as Rykka — she was making a new beginning. An album that focused on environmental issues, Kodiak rocked on a bed of electronic dance grooves, but it rocked. Songs such as Map Inside or Blackie could be Joan Jett with a foot on the disco floor. Produced by Mother Mother's Ryan Guldemond, Kodiak's mix of rock with pop might have surprised Rykka's listeners. The album was released in Switzerland in 2012 by Little Jig Records, followed by Canadian release under Vissen Record in 2013. Kodiak was nominated for Spiritual Album of the Year (Western Canadian Music Awards) and Map Inside won Best of BC (Shore 104 Radio Station). That same year, she won the prestigious Peak Performance Project competition and made multiple tours across Canada and Europe.
Having stockpiled over a hundred demos, she brought the best of these songs to producer Warne Livesey, with whom she hunkered down in Toronto's Coalition Music studios, located in a building that used to be a convent. The resulting album is Beatitudes, which marks a thrilling leap in a bold new direction for Rykka. Its towering hooks come bolstered by dazzling synths and beats tailor-made for dropping sweat on the dance floor. The first single "Movies" has been released for radio airplay in Switzerland, Germany and Canada. She will spend 2016 on tour, and the album will be out in the fall. 
Nowadays Rykka lives in an apartment in an old farmhouse in Meilen ZH, with her husband, 5 housemates, cat Charlie and a lot of sheep. She has a small recording studio where she records songs and is doing other projects. She is also giving singing lessons. Rykka loves to design her own stage costumes and doing the artistic direction in her music videos. She says she has so many ideas she can bring into her Eurovision participation, so she is waiting for the opportunity to demonstrate and share all of them. Rykka explains that she didn't grew up with Eurovision, only discovering t a few years ago, but she found it to be a wonderful event, as it connects her with other people who are excited by the ESC. As her favourite Eurovision entries she cites Euphoria of Loreeen and Love Injected of Aminata. 
The Last Of Our Kind is a triumphant mega-ballad about standing for love at the end of the world. Rykka wrote her Eurovision song with Vancouver-based songwriters Mike James and Jeff Dawson. James said that while the stakes are definitely high, Rykka is ready for it. "She has a star quality. That's pretty rare, when somebody steps on stage and immediately looks like they belong there," he said. Rykka is not the first Canadian to participate in Eurovision. Celine Dion won the contest in 1988, when she also represented Switzerland. The song was produced by Warne Livesey at Toronto's Coalition Music, and Rykka recorded the vocals in the Swiss village of Belalp. "The Last Of Our Kind" tells to remain faithful and stand up for what you believe. It is one thing to be brave when you are supported by a large group. But when you're alone, in a small community, standing for what you believe needs a lot of courage. It is also about knowing yourself and breaking the inner walls with love, showing your love to the others. I believe in the song and its message. The message is direct and strong, and I am 100 percent behind it. I really feel Eurovision is bringing all the best people together. So many people that I have met have so much passion, I feel like I can really connect with that! It's important for me in my life to find other passionate people and appreciate art and talent. It's so special for me to represent Switzerland as well because I live here now and I truly love it SO much. Switzerland is such an important part of who I am in my heritage and in my life today."

Our next guest is Canadian born representative of Switzerland Rykka, who will be performing "The Last of Our Kind" in Stockholm. "It means a lot to me to represent Switzerland because Eurovision connects so many great people. It's so amazing to meet so many amazing people who are connected to Eurovision in some way. Also, I'm so proud to represent Switzerland because it's really in my heritage and I love it here so much", says the singer. "I had just spent all year working on my new record, and I thought that taking part in the Eurovision would be an amazing adventure. I was right, it worked!". "The message of The Last Of Our Kind is to always stand up for love above all. Stand up for yourself and for people and other beings who can't stand up for themselves. Standing up for love also sometimes means to go against your own ego and really search to find the truth"
Rykka informs her entry was written specially for the Eurovision by her together with her great friends Mike James, Jeff Dawson and Warne Livesey. "The basis of the song took about a day to write, then we fixed things up for a few days afterwards. We wrote it in Vancouver and Toronto and it was produced by Warne in Toronto". There are no further changes planned in the song itself, yet "At this point I can see remixes on the horizon, as well as a music video! And keep an eye out for an acoustic version of The Last Of Our Kind!". The staging for Stockholm will be different from what we have seen at the Swiss national preselection. "Of course there will be surprises! I've had meetings with the team at the Swiss Television SRF and worked on the style and mood and what will happen on stage with them. It was really a team effort, and it was so great to be so involved, I love that stuff!". On the stage Rykka will be joined by three backing vocalists - Tanja Dankner, Nyssina and Brandy Butler. "They're all amazing singers and I'm so excited to have them on board". She also confirms she is working on the dress with LYN Lingerie: "It will be a collaboration. LYN x RYKKA!.
Rykka doesn't think there is a formula for the success at the Eurovision. "I think there is a place for everyone, and that maybe some things work better at a certain time than others. That doesn't mean that something is better or worse for eternity, just maybe at that particular second in time". Singer herself is concentrating her preparations on extra-streghtening the basis of her voice. "Going back to what I learned when I first started singing professionally and really making everything strong". Prior to the contest she plans to visit promotional events in Riga, Moscow and Amsterdam. "I have a lot of new music that is all ready to go!, says Rykka confirming that her newest album Beatitudes will be coming after the Eurovision later this year. "I like to experiment and try out new things. It's fun and important to have a strong image, but once it's set I'm not afraid to change it with the next album or tweak it for tour. I never want to stop growing and if I limit myself it should be to learn more about myself and my art, not the opposite, she says.

Rykka also released remix for her entry produced by Swiss DJ/producer team Sonny Vice & Mark David. The duo revamped the song into a powerful percussively driven Anthem that can easily be considered equal to the original as a fine addition to the package.
Preselection
Swiss regional broadcasters SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR (together forming "SRG") were responsible for the selection of the Swiss entry for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest. In it SRG was looking for performers/songs of an international standard and a quality that is competitive at a European level. Regulations for the national preselection were published on July 13. According to the preselection rules, submitted song must be no longer than three minutes and no shorter than two minutes 50 seconds. Performers must be at least 16 years of age (as at 1 May 2016). The song may not have been published prior to 1 September 2015 on the radio, TV, Internet, by public performance or any type of audio medium, etc. Performers, lyricists and composers do not need to be Swiss citizens or even resident in Switzerland.
The first stage of the selection process was be an Internet vote that is open to performers from throughout Switzerland and abroad. Internet platform is jointly operated by German language broadcaster SRF and Romansh language broadcaster RTR. The entry period began on 28 September 2015 and ended at 8 a.m. on 26 October 2015. 167 entries have been received, out of them 79 were submitted by foreign artists (UK 18, Germany 14, Sweden, Spain 5, Greece, France 4, Netherlands, Italy, Cyprus, Australia, USA 3, Finland, Israel, Canada 2, Belgium, Poland, Slovenia, Montenegro, Lithuania, Moldova, Luxembourg, India 1). Internet users have been voting for their favourite songs online for a defined period (from 2 November, 10.00 until 16 November 16, 08.00). Users were limited to four votes each, which they could spread or give to one performer. This year confirmation of the vote was based on SMS code. An expert jury, composed of 6 professionals from different fields (Sven Sarbach, Head of Show and Events SRF; Martin Bloch, program developer Entertainment department SRF; Tanja Dankner, vocal coach; Yvan Peacemaker, music producer; Michel Birri, SRF 3 host, Denise Vogel, Konzert Production 360* Show Production AG), has also rated the songs that have been submitted. Their opinion carried a 50% weighting.

Applying its own criteria, French language broadcaster RTS has selected six songs and performers to participate in the Expert Check. Preselection process was launched on 17 July, 2015 with entry form published on RTS website. Submission deadline was set on 23 October.

The three top SRF performers, the two top RTS candidates and the top RSI candidate qualified to take part in the big national decider show ESC 2016 – Entscheidungsshow, broadcasted live from Kreuzlingen on 13 February 2016. Tickets for the show could be purchased here. The show was broadcasted on German language channel SRF 1 with the original sound, on Italian RSI La 2 with commentary by Clarissa Tami and French RTS Deux with commentary by Nicolas Tanner and Jean-Marc Richard. As part of this show, artist should have performed not only their own song, but also a cover version of another song, to give viewers a comprehensive impression of the artists' overall quality. This song was selected on consultation with the production team. The final decision on who will represent Switzerland at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden was split 50/50 between the audience televote and the opinions of an expert jury. Members of the jury for the final were: Peter Ramón Baumann (Vice President of OGAE Switzerland), Yvan Peacemaker (producer), Hana Gadze (music editor SRF), Mélanie René (singer, Eurovision 2015 entrant), Flavio Tuor (music producer RTR), Laurent Pavia (music producer RTS), Licia Chery (singer), Priscille Alber (music programmer), Romina Bruschi (singer) and Nicola Locarnini (musician). Special highlight of the final was guest duet of Conchita Wurst with "Die grössten Schweizer Talente" winner Flavio Rizzello with "Rise Like A Phoenix".
Meanwhile, according to the legislation of the country, German language broadcaster SRF has revealed the amount of Eurovision participation fee being of CHF 69,000 (63,500 Euro). To compare, overall cost per episode of the latest series of the Voice of Switzerland was of CHF 819,000 per episode (753,717 Euro). Costs of other Swiss broadcasters may be revealed on a later date.
Rykka (29) was born in Vancouver, Canada, where she grew up in a very musical family. Her real name is Christina Rieder and her forefathers are Swiss. In Canada Rykka went to a music school and, for a long time, toured the country as a street musician. Meanwhile she has also recorded a few albums. Right now the versatile artist lives in a farm house close to Zurich, Switzerland, together with her husband, five fellow housmates, cat Charlie and a flock of sheep. 
Bella C (38) is the stage name of Bulgarian singer Borislava Panosetti. She has lived in Switzerland since 2004 and calls the town of Winterthur her home. At the age of 6, she started her piano and vocal education. From the age of 17 she has worked as a professional singer, musician and entertainer. As a composer, Bella C already participated in the Swiss national selection in 2011, with the song Waiting For Ya performed by Duke. 
Kaceo from Geneva have entered the stage together as a band for the first time in 2013. They have since played more than 80 concerts, reaching all the way to Paris. They convince their audience mainly with their sense of humour, authenticity, and liveliness. The current line-up consists of lead vocalist Nicolas Vivier, Karim Maghraoui (accordion), Luis Pisconte (guitar), Florian Casarsa (drums), and Quentin Mathieu (e-bass). Their song Disque d'Or makes fun of the music business, stating that it's often more about the show than about music as such. 
Stanley Miller, alias Chipper, lives in Madrid but hails from Richmond, Virginia, USA. He studied musical theater at the James Madison University of Arts in Philadelphia. His experience as a singer is based on performances in theme parks, on cruise ships and in productions of the musicals Rent and Hair. In Spain, he gained fame through his participation in the Operación Triunfo talent show in 2008, where he came third. 
Theo lives in Lugano and grew up in a musical family. He lives for music. At the moment he trains to become a multimedia and electrical technician. At the age of ten, Theo started to sing and play the guitar. He has since had a lot of experience performing in musicals, talent shows and concerts in several countries. He recorded his first song when he was 18 years old. 
Vincent Gross grew up in Basel. He has been singing since his early childhood, starting with the school choir. He sings in German and in English, cover versions as well as own songs. In 2011 his brother showed him the first three chords on the guitar, and since then he has always been playing this instrument along with his singing. The first milestone in his career was when Vincent was voted Newcomer of the Year in the show Hello Again, getting more than 30% of the calls. He is about to start studying but hopes to pursue his career as an artist and entertainer at the same time. Месседж ее - прямой и сильный, и я его поддерживаю на все 100%. Я действительно ощущаю, как Евровидение объединяет всех лучших людей. Столько людей, с которыми я встретилась, испытывают такую сильную страсть к нему, и я чувствую себя сопричастной к этому. Для меня в жизни очень важно находить других страстных людей, и ценить искусство и талант. Представлять Швейцарию для меня очень важно, потому что я сейчас живу здесь и очень люблю эту страну. Нашим следующим гостем становится уроженка Канады и представительница Швейцарии Райкка, которая исполнит в Стокгольме песню "The Last of Our Kind". "Представлять Швейцарию на Евровидении значит для меня очень много, потому что этот конкурс соединяет столько прекрасных людей. Так потрясающе знакомиться со многими замечательными людьми, имеющими отношение к Евровидению тем или иным способом. Я очень горжусь тем, что я представлю Швейцарию, потому что она лежит в моем наследии и мне здесь очень нравится", говорит исполнительница. "Я провела последний год в работе над своим новым альбомом, и подумала, что принять участие в Евровидении было бы потрясающим приключением. Я была права, это сработало!". Райкка рассказывает, что ее песня была написана специально для Евровидения ею самой вместе с ее большими друзьями Майком Джеймсом, Джеффом Доусоном и Уорном Ливси. "Чтобы написать основу песни потребовались всего одни сутки, и через несколько дней мы завершили работу над ней. Мы написали ее в Ванкувере и Торонто, а продакшн сделал Уорн в Торонто". Вносить в песню каких-либо изменений певица не планирует, но "На горизонте я могу видеть появление ремиксов, а также видеоклипа! И следите за выходом акустической версии The Last Of Our Kind". Постановка номера в Стокгольме будет отличаться от того, что мы видели на швейцарском национальном отборе. "Конечно, там будут сюрпризы! У нас были встречи с командой Швейцарского телевидения SRF, мы поработали над стилем, над настроением и над тем, что будет происходить на сцене. Это была командная работа, мне очень понравилось принимать в ней участие, это очень интересно!". На сцене с Райккой выступят три бэк-вокалистки - Таня Данкнер, Ниссина и Брэнди Батлер. "Они - потрясающие певицы, и я невероятно рада тому, что они работают с нами". Райкка считает, что на Евровидении не существует формулы для успеха. "Я думаю, что на нем есть место для всех, возможно, какие-то вещи работают в определенное время лучше других. Однако, это не означает, что что-то лучше или хуже в философии вечности, лишь может быть в ту или иную определенную секунду жизни". Сама же певица концентрирует свою подготовку на значительном усилении основы ее вокала. "Я возвращаюсь к тому, что я изучала еще когда начинала петь профессионально, и постараюсь сделать все действительно сильным". Перед конкурсом она планирует посетить промоционные мероприятия в Риге, Москве и Амстердаме. "У меня есть много записанной новой музыки, которая ждет момента, чтобы увидеть свет!, говорит Райкка и подтверждает, что ее новый альбом Beatitudes выйдет в этом году после Евровидения. "Я люблю экспериментировать и пробовать что-то новое. Конечно, это здорово и важно, иметь сложившийся имидж, но когда он есть, я не боюсь менять его для следующего альбома или дорабатывать для тура. Я никогда не хочу прекращать расти, и если я в чем-то и буду ограничивать себя, то это будет лишь для того, чтобы самой узнать глубже себя и свое искусство, а не наоборот, говорит она.

Райкка также выпустила ремикс на свою композицию, спродюсированный швейцарской командой диджеев и продюсеров Sonny Vice & Mark David. Дуэт переработал песню в мощный, основанный на перкуссии, гимн, который не уступает оригинальной версии трека.
Национальный отбор
Швейцарские региональные вещатели SRF, RTS, RSI и RTR (вместе формируя "SRG") отвечали за процесс проведения национального отбора и выбор представителя Швейцарии для конкурса Евровидение 2016. В его рамках SRG искало исполнителей и песни международного стандарта и качества, конкурентноспособного на европейском уровне. Правила национального отбора были опубликованы 13 июля. Согласно правилам отбора, заявляемые песни не должны быть длинее трех минут или короче 2х минут 50 секунд. Исполнителям должно быть свыше 16 лет возраста (на 1 мая 2016 года). Их песня не должна была быть опубликована или представлена до 1го сентября 2015 года на радио, телевидении, в сети интернет, на любом публичном выступлении. Исполнители и авторы песен не обязаны быть гражданами или даже проживать в Швейцарии.
Первой стадией национального отбора стало интернет голосование, которое было открыто для участия для исполнителей из Швейцарии и зарубежья. Интернет платформой совместно оперируют немецкоязычный телеканал SRF и романшскоязычный вещатель RTR. Период приема заявок продлился с 28 сентября 2015 года, и завершился в 8 утра 26 октября 2015 года. В его рамках было получено 167 заявок, из них 79 были поданы зарубежными артистами (Великобритания 18, Германия 14, Швеция, Испания 5, Греция, Франция 4, Нидерланды, Италия, Кипр, Австралия, США 3, Финляндия, Израиль, Канада 2, Бельгия, Польша, Словения, Черногория, Литва, Молдова, Люксембург, Индия 1). Интернет пользователи голосовали за полюбившиеся им песни онлайн в течение определенного периода (с 2 ноября 10:00 по 16 ноября 08:00). У каждого пользователя есть 4 голоса, которые они могли распределить, или дать все одному участнику. В этом году подтверждение голосования осуществлялось по СМС коду. Экспертное жюри, в которое вошли 6 профессионалов из различных областей (Свен Сарбах, руководитель шоу и ивентов SRF, Мартин Блох, программный разработчик отдела развлекательных программ SRF, Таня Данкнер, педагог по вокалу, Иван Писмейкер, музыкальный продюсер, Михаель Бирри, ведущий SRF 3, Денис Фогель, Konzert Production 360* Show Production AG), также оценило все поданные заявки. Их мнение имеет вес в 50% от общего.

Применяя собственные критерии, французскоязычный вещатель RTS выбрал шесть песен и исполнителей для участия в стадии Expert Check. Отборочный процесс был запущен 17го июля 2015 года с публикацией формы для подачи заявок, опубликованной на сайте RTS. Крайний срок приема заявок был установлен на 23 октября.

Три лучших исполнителя от SRF, два лучших кандидата от RTS и лучший исполнитель от RSI вышли в финал большого национального отбора ESC 2016 – Entscheidungsshow, который прошел в Кройцлингене 13го февраля 2016. Билеты на шоу можно было приобрести здесь. Шоу транслировалось на немецкоязычном канале SRF 1 с оригинальной звуковой дорожкой, на итальянском RSI La 2 с комментарием Клариссы Тами и францзском RTS Deux с комментариями Николя Танне и Жана-Марка Ришара. В рамках финального шоу, артисты исполняли не только свою конкурсную песню, но и кавер-версию другой песни, для того, чтобы телезрители смогли составить полное впечатление об общем качестве их исполнения. Вторая песня была выбрана ими на консультации с продюсерской командой конкурса. Финальное решение о том, кто представит Швейцарию на конкурсе Евровидение 2016 в Швеции было разделено между голосованием зрителей и жюри конкурса в соотношении 50/50. В состав жюри отбора вошли: Peter Ramón Baumann (вице-президент ОГАЕ Швейцарии), Yvan Peacemaker (продюсер), Hana Gadze (музыкальный редактор SRF), Mélanie René (певица, участница Евровидения 2015), Flavio Tuor (музыкальный продюсер RTR), Laurent Pavia (музыкальный продюсер RTS), Licia Chery (певица, участница отбора 2015), Priscille Alber (музыкальный директор), Romina Bruschi (певица) and Nicola Locarnini (музыкант). Специальными гостями стали Кончита Вурст и победитель "Die grössten Schweizer Talente" Флавио Риццелло, которые исполнят дуэт на "Rise Like A Phoenix".
В то же время, согласно требованиям законодательства страны, немецкоязычный вещатель SRF разгласил затраты на свое участие в Евровидении, которые составили в прошлом году 69 000 франков (63 500 евро). Для сравнения, стоимость эпизода последней серии шоу Голос Швейцарии составила 819 000 франков (753 717 евро). Затраты других швейцарских вещателей могут быть оглашены позднее.
