Bio

PÆNDA's musical style is a mix of electronic, hip-hop, pop and techno that manages to never fall into pretentiousness or cliché. The native Styrian started her music project in 2016 and has since been experimenting meticulously with her unique sounds. PÆNDA is building bridges by connecting the worlds of underground and mainstream music. The 31-year-old living in Vienna, Gabriela Horn (better known as PÆNDA or PAENDA) is originally from Styria. At the age of 14 PÆNDA wrote her first own songs and learned guitar and piano in order to implement them musically. When it became clear that the music was not just a passionate hobby for her, she moved to Vienna in her early twenties to study jazz and pop singing. Engagements in several music projects followed, among other things she has appeared in 2015 in the casting show POPSTARS as part of trio Nadja, Gabriela und Pauline, and the same 2015 year she has launched her own project PÆNDA. As a solo artist, she not only started to compose and write lyrics, but also to produce her own music. "As a young girl in the school choir in Styria, I would not even have dared to dream that," said the artist.

Last February, PÆNDA presented her multi-layered debut album "EVOLUTION I". Electropop meets hip-hop elements, virtuoso singing on beats that invite you to dance. Her singles Waves or Good Girl are good examples for her inclination towards blending a subtle form of avant-garde with the fleet-footedness of pop. She elaborates: "My sister is a good indicator: If she doesn't sing or hum the hook line right after I played her a new song, I know that the melody isn't powerful enough." PÆNDA was able to convince on the big stage last summer, when she appeared in the opening act of the British pop star Jessi J before 3,000 spectators in the almost sold out Vienna Arena.

Currently she lives in Vienna, where she composes, writes and records music in her home studio. On studio records, she plays all the instruments herself, in live performances she is accompanied by her sister and a friend. In addition to her music career, she works as a vocal coach for Pop music at the music school Leobersdorf.

PÆNDA is pop. PÆNDA is EDM with some rough edges. PÆNDA is a conscious tightrope walk, right between listening experience and the force to dance. Singer, songwriter and producer churns out tracks that are as colorful, diverse and different as her hair style. Sometimes emotional, sometimes bold and straight from the shoulder; PÆNDA can be weird and rough as well as smooth and melodic at the same time. Her sound incorporates pop with various elements of electronic music. Future bass, hip hop and trap are all woven together, following just one rule: to never lose sight of PÆNDA's characteristic pop appeal. Her live setup consists of a mix of DJ'ing, live vocals, synths and bass, performed by an all-girl live band.

It is clear that PÆNDA wants to legitimately use the big song-contest stage as a promotion platform for her music. Regardless, PÆNDA loves the Eurovision because it shows Europe at its best, stands for cultural diversity and tolerance is the central message. The fact that she was chosen to represent Austria this year fills her with pride and joy. The lively Styrian singer has always followed the Song Contest closely as a fan girl - her all-time favorite interpreters are Loreen and Alf Poier.

"When I was watching the Eurovision Song Contest on ORF in the past few years, I knew that if the opportunity presented itself, I would very much like to become a part of it and compete for Austria. There are so many beautiful things going on in the course of this wonderful event: music becomes a universal language, boundaries dissolve and it is shown that love is colorful, diverse and can not be classified in any drawer. The Song Contest is, so to say, a bridge builder which manages to unite different cultures and religions for a while. Now I'm allowed to sing for Austria and I'm overwhelmed. It really means a lot to me to be part of this message to the world". ORF program director Kathrin Zechner: "With PÆNDA, we are setting an expressive sign in Tel Aviv for the modern, powerful music of Austria. PÆNDA is an outstandingly versatile artist and woman, who not only composes and writes the songs she impressively sings and interprets them, but also produces - so her art lives 100 per cent. It is her own emotions, experiences and her soul that she expresses and with which she will cast a spell over the audience. I am happy and content, especially in the jubilee year of the conquest of suffrage by women that a strong as well as sensitive, young and modern woman represents Austria on the big ESC stage".

"If only you yourself open your personal limits and you set your own limits - then you are finally a free person! On my way to becoming an artist, I have put my own wishes into an action! Just as every person in the course of life from chrysalis can turn to a butterfly. I am purposeful, open and want to change the world for the better. That's why I go to the people - and as an independent person. Equality and justice always start with oneself. Stop wishing - start doing! It is better to do something for it than you wish it!"

PÆNDA has released her ballad 'Limits' on 8 March with an accompanying music video. "Limits" is an "atmospherically charged electronic pop ballad". The song is part of her new album 'Evolution II' that will be out on 26 April on Wohnzimmer Records. Concert presentation of the album will take place on April 23 in Grelle Forelle, Vienna. Limits tells the story of how PÆNDA pushed beyond all limits in her zeal and passion for music – to the point of full exhaustion. "Limits" is a song about the pressure that society today has on man: you always have to be strong, always in a good mood and always perfect. Your own limits are constantly being exceeded until at some point you can not do it anymore and lose access to yourself. The video was shot by Lelo Brossmann in the Unteres Belvedere as part of the exhibition "City of Women - Women Artists in Vienna from 1900 to 1938".

PÆNDA: "Being aware of the moments where I needed a break was a process for me. It was a long and at times difficult road to learning my own limits. I am purposeful, open and I want to change the world for the better. That's why I go to the people - and as an independent person. Equality and justice always start with yourself! And that's exactly why I wanted to publish my song on the 8th of March, World Women's Day"

Her new album Evolution II is brimming with 10 self-penned and self-produced powerful songs, PÆNDA presents herself as more accessible and catchier than before. She left behind the fear of being too straightforward in her style of composing and unfolds as a contemporary pop artist with the right sensitivity for refined melodies and a knack for comprehensible sound structures. The range of topics covers the themes of confidence, self-determination, perseverance and self-awareness.

Album tracks like So Loud, Everything I'm Not or Like a Domino encourage listeners to not get sidelined by society or self-proclaimed advisors, while still leaving room for vulnerability. "There were so many times where someone would try to lead me astray or cause insecurity. Thankfully, I can always count on a few people who truly support me. It was tough, learning how to stay true to and trusting in myself. But it was about time." The album's opener, fittingly titled I Like the Way You Hate Me, is a metaphorical one-finger salute to internet-detractors, while Love Myself is a catchy ode to self-love and believing in one's own abilities. "For a long time, I tolerated too many things and backed down a lot. I learned so much from these experiences. Now I know what I want and what is really important to me." This makes Evolution II an album without compromise, but with a lot of feeling.

Austrian broadcaster ORF has revealed broadcasting details for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

The event was hosted by ORF-ESC commentator Andi Knoll, who again with his "Mr. Song Contest proudly presents" will open Eurovision evenings on 14-16-18 May at 20:15 on ORF eins. After the party, PAENDA has presented her new album "Evolution II" to the public of Grellen Forelle. It will be released on April 26 at Wohnzimmer Records.

ORF Director-General Alexander Wrabetz: "Austria and the Eurovision are a success story since 2014! With PAENDA, we continue to pursue our path and once again start with outstanding local talent. Remarkable, we find that PAENDA is not only a performer of her song but has also written and produced it. I wish her all the best for her big performance. "

ORF program director Kathrin Zechner: "If PAENDA puts all her sensitivity into this year's Austrian entry to the Song Contest in Tel Aviv with her rousing musical passion, then we've all won already. We send her all good wishes for Tel Aviv on the exciting, enriching, unforgettable journey through the world of the biggest TV event worldwide! "

On Tuesday, April 23 Austrian representative PAENDA will present her new album "Evolution II" in the Vienna club Grelle Forelle. Prior to that singer has spoken with APA agency.

"On my first album, I thought everything through ten times. There was the idea behind it: it has to be complex, independent, elaborate. That was different at the second album. Before that, I had a lot of respect for the mainstream and fear that I would be labeled superficial. I've dropped that now. I want it grooving and you're in the song right away. I wanted to do something that I would listen to myself. I'm fully behind the first album! But there are actually some songs on it that I did not listen to immediately after completion - not because they were bad, but because they did not correspond to what I would listen to"

"My original song that I submitted for the Eurovision has been rejected. At first I also thought that it might become more of a song that represents me the way I am most of the time. I was surprised that they chose this song. Then came the train of thought: That's exactly what the song denounces. People always expect me to be the superwoman. But why can not I have such feelings once? I create with my music a space in which my emotions may exist. The song has a strong message, and that was important to me. Meanwhile I think it is the perfect choice"

"My sister will perform the backing vocals on the Eurovision stage. It would be very strange to jump around on stage to the song. So the staging will be quiet. It's hard to say if I'm going to the final. There are a lot of strong songs this year. I do my best and enjoy the music"

Austrian entry, electropop ballad Limits performed by Pænda has been just presented on Ö3-Wecker radio program.

"Limits" is not a pleasant pop song. You have to get involved with the song. It comes calmly, but intensively, is very modern in appearance, almost avant-garde, and captivates above all by the beautiful singing of Pænda, which effortlessly raises to the highest heights and elegantly floats over very reduced beats. In any case, Austria presents itself at the ESC in a very forward-looking, and very modern.

ORF believes that reaching the final should be quite feasible with this song. Especially in the rating of the expert jury, which is indeed characterized by their exquisite taste in music, Pænda should score big - the audience, however, could turn out the one or the other amazement at home on the couch, the points may be rather meager. It would be to wish of the 31-year-old musician that the director of the world's biggest music show placed her appearance in the 2nd Semifinal between two acts that go with shrill, loud, typical Eurovision entry.

Pænda is ready for her big performance in Israel. The stage at the Convention Center in Tel Aviv will probably be taken by herself, musically supported by backing vocalists, who do not necessarily have to be seen in the spotlight. The exact staging will be intensively worked on over the next few weeks. She is not nervous. Rather positively excited, motivated to the blue colored hair tips, and full of anticipation of the adventure of her lives. With the song composed by herself she now has the great opportunity to make a name for herself as a musician all over Europe.

Pænda is a one-woman show. She writes and composes her own songs, she plays all the instruments herself, and she also produces her own songs. And very clever: On April 26, she releases her new album "Evolution II", on which "Limits" is on it, and thus uses - quite legitimately - the Eurovision as a promotion platform. If the plan works, only the sky is her limit.

Contest entry of Austria PÆNDA - Limits will be presented on March 8 at 7:40 CET on Ö3-Wecker radio program.

Preselection

The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) will once more select their entrant and song internally. Head of Entertainment of Austrian broadcaster ORF Edgar Böhm retires at the end of the year. He has not only been responsible for various show formats such as "Starmania" and "Dancing Stars" since 1999, but was also responsible for the children's programming, cabaret & comedy, Opernball & Life Ball and was the executive producer of the Eurovision 2015. One of the last tasks of Böhm will be to decide on the Austrian representation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

Once again, ORF commissioned Ö3 veteran Eberhard Forcher to nominate a number of performers. Forcher confirmed that speculated names of Joe Traxler and Sara De Blue are among of up to twelve contestants who will compete for the internal ORF pitch this year. "In September there will be 3-5 artists / songs chosen, who will enter the final pitch. The official decision, who will represent Austria in Israel will be made in December", he stated. On 14 January, Forcher revealed that representative of Austria at the Eurovison 2019 will be chosen this week. In the final of the internal preselection are considered three entries.

Austrian entry will be presented by Ö3 host and national selection scout Eberhard Forcher during program Ö3 Wecker on Tuesday, 29 January. Reportedly, the singer is female.

Speaking on "Merci Chérie – Der Eurovision podcast" Forcher revealed that he works with ORF staff and a panel of around 15 to 20 experts in both the music industry and the Eurovision field, in particular - and this year, unlike previous ones, the decision of the panel was not unanimous. PÆNDA's originally submitted entry was not convincing enough, but then Forcher noted another track from her "Evolution II" album "Limits". The song has a different feel to PÆNDA's previous music and moves away from her electronic sound - it is not a song he would describe as a "radio-friendly" song, and he is sure it will divide audiences at the contest.

Presentation of the contest entry of the representative of Austria PÆNDA - Limits will take place on 8 March on ORF press-conference which will start at 10:00 CET, as well as in Ö3-Wecker radio program on the same morning. Music video for the entry is currently being filmed.

Vienna Arena.

Треки альбома, такие как "So Loud", "Everything I'm Not" или "Like a Domino", побуждают слушателей не поддаваться на крючки общества или самопровозглашенных советников, оставляя при этом место для уязвимости. " Открывающая альбом песня, под названием "I Like the Way You Hate Me", является метафорическим жестом средним пальцем интернет-хулителям, а "Love Myself" - броская ода любви к себе и вере в свои способности.
