Czech Republic - First rehearsal

Eran on Sat, 05/04/2019 - 08:43

Czech band, Lake Malawi, is on stage. The lead singer is jumping around wearing, yellow sweater. Backing vocals are very strong. Lead jumps around, while the camera shows him and the other band members in colorful squares. Red and Yellow are the colors this year for the Czech performance. Ironically this song starts with "Can you hear it?" after the Cypriot mute performance. yes, we can hear you, dear.

Czech Republic First Rehearsal

Martina believes in her song and it shows. A very sensual performance that might be a bit too eccentric and introverted for some viewers. She is a jazz singer after all.
I'm not quite sure the staging helps selling that image. The bronze (or is it copper?) pantsuit might be a bit too shiny for a song that would need a stripped down classical presentation. Colours of yellow mixed with purple also seem like a mismatch and I don't quite get the overall concept at the moment. But Martina seems like a lovely girl and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her that Europe will think differently about the visual aspects of the performance.

Fika time

Yes I know I said Fika

I got distracted though, Czech Republic is on. Now I am not a huge fan of this to be honest, but she really delivers the vocal, a few technical issues on the first run through, but after that she seemed perfect and owns the stage - not always easily achieved by solo artists when on a big Eurovision stage

That said I do get Norway 2015 moments from this, a great semi gothic feel to the song, but not quite reaching the masses for the win

First rehearsal Czech Republic

Gabriela is the first to kick things off and she's proving to be in top form already.

Vocally this lady's sounding absolutely perfect. Not a single note is sounding out of place. The camera slowly zooms in during the first verse, while Gabriela walks down the stage. Apart from that it's a pretty static performance, but her song I stand lends itself for that.

The backdrop and LED floor has been filled with the colours and patterns used in the official video with main colours being purple, blue and magenta. That's perhaps the only criticism there is on the staging for the moment. Vocally you can't fault Gabriela, she is standing right there with her song.

The camera work however at times is a little sloppy, so I hope they manage to sort that out. Not sure using different angles really works for the ballad. The other minus point, is that perhaps the overall colours are a little bit too overpowering. So I hope they play around with the lights a little.

But what a voice! Sincerely hope, Europe votes en masse for the Czech Republic!
