First rehearsal of Czech Republic

Desiree on Sun, 04/29/2018 - 13:52

As one of the favourites to win this contest the Czech Republic is one of the most anticipated rehearsals. Mikolas is in the centre of the stage, with his backpack as always, and joined by two dancers and at least one female backing singer, who is hidden and taking over some parts of Mikolas' singing to give him some air. No leds is no barrier for this song as with a few screens and some extra pink walls and podiums they manage to recreate the atmosphere of the video.

However, it's not all overwhelming as you would expect from a big favourite, there are some good shots where the screen divided in three and of course we have the signature dances with some added acrobatics but the shots from the dancers are a bit awkward.

Capucha & The Dowsers Society

Andy on Sun, 04/29/2018 - 13:37

Since Eurovision week is not only about Eurovision music, but also learning more about the culture of the hosting country - we have used our free evening to travel from Lisbon accross Tajo river to Barreiro city to attend concert of rock band The Dowsers Society in a quite unique setting of Associação Desenvolvimento Artes e Oficios - Center of Crafts and Arts. The support band was Capucha from Spain.

Sadly we have counted only 50 members of the audience at the concert, despite the very high quality music output of both band. Capucha offered mostly indie-alternative with blues-rock tendencies and their songs had a tendency to start slowly getting heavier to the end. All but one songs were in Spanish, with one song in English. Band also got a lot of memorabilia - caps, T-shirts etc. You can listen to them at: https://capucha.bandcamp.com/ and two clips below.

The Dowsers Society is quite interesting band with also blues, psychedelic and stoner influences and is practically on the world class level. The interaction with 3 members is perfect. The set has included 11 songs, few of them instrumentals and all in English. And they also brought their albums (7 Euros) and mediators (1 Euro) - the band also drawn few albums for fans attending the concert. Unfortunately we had to leave 1 song short to catch last ferry to Lisbon and got back to the city at 2am. You can watch few videos below and listen more at https://thedowserssociety.bandcamp.com/

The first rehearsal of Belgium

Desiree on Sun, 04/29/2018 - 12:07

Wow, this is good! Sennek delivers the best vocals I've heard on this song live. The staging, as well as her dress, are black but it suits and it's finally something different after all the blue / red / yellow stagings we have seen so far. Speaking of the staging, it's probably the most basic one Hans Pannecoucke has delivered so far. It's just Sennek on stage, she walks around a bit.

However, in this first one through there is one big 'but' - and that is the start. The idea of showing just the eyes and then opening up the rest of her face and her is nice, but the cameraman should have a steady hand and not the shaking we saw now. Then again, first rehearsal, first run, a lot of time to improve.

Also, I can't really see it well now, but it seems to me she is the first act to use the 'satellite' stage in the middle, bringing her closer if not among the audience which will hopefully help her connect to the audience.

Belgium First Rehearsal

It’s all in the eyes…and Sennek’s eyes are all we can see as the performance begins. Eventually the lights show us more of her face, then all of her figure. It’s only the second half the song when the strobe lighting gets going. Vocally competent but restrained somewhat – she seems to understandably be saving herself for the days to come. Think we’ll see it build as the week goes on.
