Hanna Pakarinen - Leave Me Alone

Hanna Pakarinen is Sony BMG’s candidate. “Thanks to Lordi’s success, you can participate in the contest with your own music, not just Euro pop. The event has become fun and exciting. I’m all for trying out new things!” Hanna says. Growing up in Eastern Finland near the Russian border, Hanna started her career by singing in local rock groups by night and driving a forklift truck at a paper mill by day. Her lucky break came in 2004 when she took part in the TV talent show "Idols", the Finnish version of the international hit format "Pop Idol". It didn't take the Finns long to fall in love with this talkative, friendly, and completely unpretentious small-town girl with the big voice. In other words, Hanna won "Idols" and signed with Sony BMG because she sang like a true diva but acted utterly unlike one. At 25, Hanna is now a veteran of the Finnish music scene, the country's best-selling English-language solo artist, a huge concert favourite, and one of Finland's best-loved celebrities. Even after her Gold and Platinum albums and countless hit singles she still continues to grow musically: on her new album "Lovers", which also features "Leave Me Alone", she co-wrote most of the songs. Max Mannola, ESC Fans Finland, specially for ESCKaz: "Now leave me alone, I wanna go home" said Hanna Pakarinen with a glimpse in her eyes to close the winner press conference in hotel Caribia in Turku. She felt happy with her victory, but the lack of time and many other press individuals interviewing her made it difficult to get any comments. She smiled with her trophy and a rose given by Jani & The Jetsetters, which in their song was meant for the bride. Hanna could not say herself about plans on promo tour, video or single release, so I had to interview the director of Sony BMG Finland, Mr Kimmo Valtanen. He confirmed that a separate preview video will be made, and that the single will now be released internationally and will be available on iTunes as well. There were not any plans about a promo tour yet. Mr Valtanen sounded like it might not be necessary, as he believes "Muhammed will come to the mountain". Some hours later, Hanna appeared again in the hotel's restaurant, as most of the artists. The Hotel Caribia is an interesting place for holding a national final: it is a big hotel with bars and a restaurant at the ground floor, everything in a big open space. Journalists, hotel guests and the audience people are numerous and the hotel's sometimes too narrow corridors were very crowdy. But the place is also practical for everybody for waiting for your friends comfortably sitting at small tables in the corridor. The system of this Finnish national final was slightly shorter than last year, as the super-final did not include 6 songs but only 3. These three were this time Hanna Pakarinen's "Leave me alone", Lovex's "Anyone anymore" and Thunderstone's "Face in the mirror". Hanna and Lovex had been the favourites since many weeks, while Thunderstone came a bit as a surprise. However, Thunderstone managed to pass Lovex in popularity, by getting 33 % of the votes versus 23 %. Hanna Pakarinen got 44 % of the votes and got the honour to perform the host song of the ESC 2007 in Helsinki. The Finnish ESC site Viisukuppila, like in last years, awarded the fan prize to the artist chosen by poll voting. Johanna Kurkela got the honour of being the fan's favourite with 608 points, miles ahead of Lovex (476 points) and Hanna (329 points). The prize was given on the stage, before the "real" final results. Interval act performer was the Finnish veteran singer Danny, performing his song from the national final in 1975, "Seikkailija" (Adventurer) which came second. Also the comedian Simo Frangen with his slightly humoristic Eurovision News, and the accordion man Mr Piiparinen entertained the audience via video. Short comments on every song: HANNA PAKARINEN Leave me alone - white dress over black shirt then taken off, wind machine and stage charisma. Quite usual song but needs a strong performer like Hanna is. Finnish Idols will perhaps never find any as strong performer than she - now ESC is waiting. BEATS AND STYLES See the signs - fortunately, the male singer Asmo Soivio had calmed down a bit, but the confusing song was without hooks and got a very bad placing in the results. JANI & JETSETTERS Musta sulhanen - pleasant sad country folk song about the groom who takes away the bride from her wedding… but far too static performance for a host song in ESC. LOVEX Anyone Anymore - very strong intro and nice dresses stylistically, teenagers' favourite, performed normally but perhaps the melody was not strong enough for everybody in Finland. JUKKA KUOPPAMAKI Levita siivet - this old schlager veteran is very sure on stage but does not move much. Finally his folk-like song was not alone getting older people's votes. JANN WILDE & ROSE AVENUE Rock'n Roll Dreams - this colourful peacock was one of the surprises of the final, punk rock nostalgy seemed to touch many people after all! KATRA Tietaja - not far from Tarja Turunen's style, really! gave a strong rememberable performance with red light full of mystic atmosphere. LAURA Take a chance - like a midnight cabaret show from a cruising boat, professionally made. HUMANE Plane away - not the strongest ballad, though well performed. The bass singer in the end wakes the song up, and many people said he and the woman could well have performed without Kim Herold, who is not a strong singer. THUNDERSTONE Face in the mirror - very professional heavy rock, but the problem with this song is that it cannot appeal to others than hard rock fans, which on the other hand seem to be numerous in Finland, as this managed a 2nd place! JOHANNA KURKELA Olet uneni kaunein - the Performance of the night, every second of this opera drama was enjoyable, with the bed on stage and the superbly beautiful Johanna dressed in white. Maybe it did not look as superb on TV, or did her fans vote less times than they should have? KENTALA Left my heart behind - not much to say right after Johanna, but it was a decent closing soft rock entry with grand piano on stage. By the way, Kentala was the winner of the fake voting in the rehearsal! Система финского отбора в этом году была немного укорочена по сравнению с прошлым - в суперфинал вышли только 3 песни, а не 6. Ими стали композиция Ханны Пакаринен "Leave me alone", Ловекс с "Anyone anymore" и хэви-металл группа Тандерстоун с песней "Face in the mirror". Изначально фаворитами считались Ханна и Ловекс, попадание Тандерстоуна в число суперфиналистов стало сюрпризом. BEATS AND STYLES See the signs - к счастью, солист Асмо Соивио немного утих, но странноватая песня без особых фишек не стала популярной и заняла весьма низкое место JANI & THE JETSETTERS Musta sulhanen - приятная печальная кантри-фолк композиция о женихе, который забирает невесту с ее свадьбы... но выступление было черезчур статичным. LOVEX Anyone Anymore - очень сильное вступление и стилистически сильные костюмы, фаворит молодежи, неплохо исполнено, но возможно мелодия оказалась не столь сильна, чтобы впечатлить всех финнов. ЙУККА КУОППАМАКИ Levita siivet - ветеран шлягера, который выглядел очень уверенно на сцене, но не слишком много двигался. В итоге его поп-фолк песня не смогла собрать достаточно голосов старшего поколения. ЯНН ВАЙЛД & ROSE AVENUE Rock'n'Roll Dreams - это красочно оформленное выступление стало одним из сюрпризов финала, ностальгия по панк-року видимо все-таки коснулась многих людей! КАТРА Tietaja - не слишком далеко от стиля Тарьи Турунен, выступила весьма уверенно в мистической атмосфере с красной подсветкой. ЛАУРА Take a chance - профессиональное шоу кабаре. HUMANE Plane away - не самая сильная баллада, хотя и очень хорошо исполненная. Бас-солист в конце немного пробуждает песню и многие считали, что он и солистка могли бы вполне хорошо выступить вдвоем, без Кима Херольда, который не является столь сильным исполнителем. THUNDERSTONE Face in the mirror - очень профессионально сделанный хэви, но основной проблемой этой песни было, что она не аппелировала к другой аудитории. Но, как оказалось, фанатов хэви в Финляндии настолько много, что группа смогла занять 2е место. ЙОХАННА КУРКЕЛА Olet uneni kaunein - лучшее выступление вечера, можно было получить удовольствие от каждой секунды этой опеной драмы с кроватью на сцене и очень красивой Йоханной, одетой в белое. Возможно, на телеэкране выступление выглядело не столь эффектно, или ее фанаты недостаточно проголосовали? КЕНТАЛА Left my heart behind - после Йоханны особенно не запомнился, но в общем это неплохая софт-рок композиция с фортепиано на сцене. Кстати, Кентала победил в тренировочном голосовании на репетиции!

Saturday 3rd of February. - 3rd Finnish semi-final in Tohloppi studios in Tampere ESCKAZ reporter spent his Saturday in Tampere, where the Finnish 3rd semi-final was held. Interviews of the competing artists (Johanna Kurkela, Kentala and Lovex) as the nostalgy interval act performers were made in the afternoon, before the flood of teenager girls, Lovex's fans, whose screams in the studio did not leave a mystery to anyone about who had the "home advantage" (Lovex is a band from Tampere!). Fortunately, the artists did not compete against each other yet (wait for the Finnish final) but let their 2 songs find the difference between each other. Johanna Kurkela's first song, "Olet uneni kaunein" (You are my most beautiful dream) had the most special stage performance, using candle light and a big bed where Johanna touches but then pushes away her lover from the dream. The song is about a longing for something you can never get… Also the rocker Kentala (2nd in Finnish final 2005) used candles and a grand piano in his song "Left my heart behind", which also went through. The four other performances were more ordinary, the ones of Lovex however getting the most "Wild and violent" (name of their 2nd song) support, as already mentioned! Lovex made a strong campaign for voting for their first song, "Anyone, anymore", which succeeded quite brilliantly with 84 % against 16 %. The other eliminated songs were thus Johanna's "Jossain metsan takana" (Somewhere behind the forest", an almost ethnic soft rhythm with special lyrics, and Kentala's irony about the "Merry-go-round" of the music industry. The first nostalgy performer was the Finnish grand old Romany music lady, Anneli Sari, who performed her song from the Finnish final 1974, "Jaahyvaiset" (Goodbyes), a great ballad from old times. Paivi Paunu and Kim Floor closed the show with their ESC song 1972 "Muistathan" (You remember), the musical style of which the book "ESC Companion" pretends very faulty being Israeli, while the acceleration of the rhythm in the end is well-known Russian style! Artists said their opinions about ESC rules. Kentala does not like at all the "singback" rule, he would want to play live! Orchestra would of course still be great, said Johanna and Anneli Sari. Lovex guys were rather disturbed by the 3 minute rule, as each song needs an extra version for ESC. But Kim Floor summed it all up: "These are not the big questions of life!" All the artists had at least some own favourites or memories of ESC history. Johanna declared that Katri-Helena has always been her favourite, while Kentala mentioned "Huilumies" (ESC 80) as his favourite song - an opinion which subscribed shares! Lovex guys mentioned many ESC songs, such as Bye bye baby (FI 94), Yamma yamma (FI 92), In my dreams (NO 05), Hasheket shenishar (IL 05), Dima Bilan's Never let you go (RU 06) and Nightwish's Sleepwalker (FI selection 2000). Anneli Sari mentioned La la la (ES 68) and Isabelle Aubret's songs, while Paivi and Kim had not followed ESC so regularly. But Paivi had a statement to make: "It was good to be ESC artist in the old times, as you could walk free in town, there were not so hard security measures…" We will find those artists and 9 more again in the Finnish final in Turku, the 17th of February. Интервью участвующих артистов (Йоханна Куркела, Кентала и Ловекс), а также с участниками интервал акта - бывшими финскими исполнителями Евровидения, были сняты днем, до того, как все заполонили девочки-подростки, поклонницы группы Ловекс, чьи крики в студии не оставили сомнения о том, на чьей стороне будут "помогающие стены" (Ловекс - группа из Тампере!). К счастью, на этот раз артисты соперничали не друг с другом (подождите еще финала), а только их две песни соперничали между собой. Первая композиция - Йоханна Куркела "Olet uneni kaunein" (Ты моя самый красивый сон) была показана со специально подготовленной постановкой, используя свет свечи и большую кровать, где Йоханна прикосается и потом выталкивает своего любовника из сна. Песня также о поисках того, что ты никогда не сможешь получить... Рокер Кентала (занявший 2е место на финском отборе 2005) также использовал свечи и фортепиано в своей песне "Left my heart behind", которая прошла в следующий раунд. Другие четыре выступления были более обычными, без особенных шоу элементов. Группа Ловекс правда получила настоящую "Wild and violent" поддержку, в соответствии с названием их второй песни. Однако, поскольку группа постоянно призывала всех голосовать за их первую композицию "Anyone, anymore" она вышла в финал, набрав 84% голосов. Выбывшими песнями стали "Jossain metsan takana" (Где-то за лесом) Йоханны, практически этник с соответствующим текстом и ироничная песня Кенталы "Merry-go-round" о музыкальной индустрии. Первым исполнителем из серии ностальгии была финская бабушка цыганской музыки Аннели Сари, которая исполнила песню с финала финского отбора 1974 года "Jaahuvaiset", отличная баллада из старых времен. Завершили выступления Паиви Пауну и Ким Флор со своей песней с Евровидения 1972 года "Muistathan", музыкальный стиль которой книга "ESC Companion" описывает ошибочно как израильский, хотя ускорение ритма к концу песни скорее свойственно российской музыке! Участники Ловекса отметили несколько песен - Bye bye baby (1994), Yamma yamma (1992), In my dreams (Норвегия 05), Hasheket shenishar (Израиль 05), песню Билана Never Let You Go и композицию Nightwish Sleenwalker (отбор на Евровидение 2000). Jani & The Jetsetters - The band has adopted a term ”surf schlager”, mix touching lyrics with an original, retro-style widescreen sound. Jetsetters blend pop, rock and schlager into a sound that is both fresh and old-fashioned. Jetsetters have a backbone of a traditional Finnish instrumental rock band, but their new-generation music and lyrics along with modern production techniques make the whole interesting. Hanna Pakarinen is a Finnish pop singer who was the first winner of Finland's version of Idols. Before she won the Idols (Finland) she worked as a forklift driver. Pakarinen also had previous musical experience in a band called Rained. Her 2004 debut album “When I Become Me” has sold over 55 000 copies, and her second album “Stronger” (2005) has sold gold. Hanna’s best known hits are “Stronger Without You”, “Kiss Of Life”, “Fearless” and “Love Is Like A Song”. Thunderstone were formed in 2000. When THUNDERSTONE's 2002 self-titled debut hit worldwide audiences the buzz proved to be loud, the feel-good album easily etched itself into the annals of quality Finnish heavy metal. Inspired by their own ability to leave a mark on the scene, THUNDERSTONE returned to Sonic Pump to record their sophomore album, The Burning. The album not only coalesced the band's collective personality through faultless production, but captured a grittier and more uninhibited performance by vocalist Pasi Rantanen. Tools Of Destruction - the band's third album recorded at Sonic Pump - is where you'll also hear THUNDERSTONE's accumulated live experience. Jukka Kuoppamaki is undeniably one of Finland's most successful musicians. This living legend of Finnish popular music started his music career in the late 1950's as a member of the singing group Neloset. His first solo album, "Mita kansa haluaa" (What the People Want), was released in 1965. In 1971 and 1972 he won the famous Rostock song festival, he has taken part in the Eurovision national selection in Finland five times. In 1971, he came in second with the song "Uinu poikani vain" (Sleep, My Son). Katra is one of the newcomers. She studies classical singing and also plays the piano. Her background in dance and gymnastics comes through in her live performances. Katra has previously been seen in many other bands, including Lovex and Essentia. She played the synthesiser and sang background vocals in both bands. Katra’s music is about the mysticism of classical antiquity and powerful emotions. Kentala - In 1996 participated in a national band contest as a composer and performer with own group Wee People. In 2004 the Slangar sisters from Deekay Records invited him to write a song with their housewriter Janne Hyцty. Laura Voutilainen was born in Jyvaskyla on May 17th, 1975. She formed her first band, Kevytlinja, when she was 15. Released in 1994, her debut album, “Laura Voutilainen,” has thus far sold 135,000 copies. Laura’s second album, “Kaksi karttaa” (Two Maps), was released in August 1996 and reached gold record sales within three days. Laura’s Christmas album, “Lumikuningatar” (Snow Queen), was released for Christmas 1997, “Etelan yossa” (Mediterranean Nights), was released in the 1998. In 2002, Laura after winning Finland’s national selection round by a landslide represented Finland in the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest in Tallinn. Released in 2003, the album “Paivakirja” (Diary) included lyrics also by Laura herself. In 2005, Laura released the album “Tassa hetkessa” (In This Moment) on her own label. Song titles and running order for the Finnish semifinals was revealed by YLE. It is interesting that after the announcement by YLE it has appeared that both songs of Jan Wilde and Rose Avenue "Soft is selling" and "Lover Lover Lover" are already widely available online, released as promos in 2005 and were publicly performed prior to October 1, 2006, also breaking the rules of Finnish selection as well: 3. The entries in the Finnish national selection must not be publicly performed or comercially released prior to February 11, 2007 Update: Jan Wilde confirmed via his website that both entries were disqualified. It is expected that band will enter two new compositions to the contest. Band was given time by the end of January to submit new songs, and artist already confirmed they have received some suggestions from Swedish authors. This line-up, although clearly better than e.g. in 2005, however contains several quite unknown artists. One could have expected more "big names" to be interested to represent Finland in the home contest. There are only three super-famous artists: Hanna Pakarinen (Idols winner 2004), Laura Voutilainen (ESC 2002) and Jukka Kuoppamaki (musical career for almost 50 years). The host country's national final should be an event in which many legendary artists are interested, but this field brought only one ESC veteran artist. So Finland will not have any "national institution" as home artist like Greece did with Anna Vissi; this would have meant for example somebody like Katri Helena or Paula Koivuniemi… but instead, Finland might very well show some new talent for the European public. Among the others, Eurovision and pop fans seem to know Beats and Styles, Humane and Lovex from before. Those who like more romantic music are pleased about the presence of Johanna Kurkela, who also may compete about the older generation's voices with Jukka Kuoppamaki. Katra is among the more unknown names, but her group has been even compared to Nightwish due to the classical singing style. Jani & The Jetsetters, Jann Wilde & Rose Avenue and Thunderstone seem to be the most unknown to Eurovision fans, but Thunderstone of course has a completely different fan field. It was surprising there is only one real heavy rock band in this line-up, but according to inside sources, at least one other such group did cancel its participation in the last minute. The language field will be a bit less equal than last year, but again more equal than in the years 2002-2005. Four artists at least (Jukka Kuoppamaki, Jani & The Jetsetters, Johanna Kurkela and Katra) will sing in Finnish, and also Laura might sing one of her 2 songs in Finnish. by Max Mannola, ESC Fans Finland	Хотя состав исполнителей отбора этого года и значительно сильнее, чем, например, в 2005 году, однако, в нем примут участие несколько практически неизвестных артистов. ESCKaz through help of Max Mannola managed to talk with few participants right at the revelation event, with more extended interviews to follow. Jukka Kuoppamaki's comments: "I have modernised my music style, which can be heard in the song arrangements. I expected that here would be many rockers, and I am not at all sad that I am he only representant of my music genre, as this raises my opportunities. And of course I will sing in Finnish. I miss the old times when all the songs were in the national languages. English should not be a "must", as large numbers of people in every country, especially more Eastern ones do not understand even English. For the international market, I would not sing in English, I prefer others covering my songs in their languages instead. I also wonder why some countries borrow singers from abroad without any contact to the country they represent. Geir Ronning at least had his wife from here, but Estonia borrows Swedish women without any connection there. I guess EBU is also working hard with these themes, as they encourage artists to sing in their own language." The guys from Thunderstone say that despite they are heavy-rockers, they have followed ESC a lot, and they have liked e.g. Katri Helena, Herreys and Carola. "And also Kojo, he was unforgettable!" From this field's artists, they prefer Laura's music. And they are glad that hard rock is now finally accepted to the contest. One of the more interesting-sounding newcomers, if we look at music styles, can be Jann Wilde & Rose Avenue: according to themselves, their music is a mix of "camp and glamour from 70's, punk from 80's, David Bowie, pop and theatre". The leader Jann has followed ESC quite a lot and his preferred artists have been a.o. Johnny Logan and Brainstorm. Мне также непонятно, почему многие страны приглашают иностранных исполнителей, чтобы они представили их на конкурсе. Finland has announced no change in the way Eurovision entry will be selected. 12 artists will be invited, each with 2 songs that they will perform in semis. Best song of each artist will qualify to the final. Semifinals will be held on January 20th and 27th, February 3rd and 10th with final on 17th of February. Finalists will be named on November 6th.

Полуфиналы пройдут 20 и 27 января, 3 и 10 февраля, финал пройдет 17 февраля. Финалисты будут объявлены 6го ноября.
