Global.Kryner has released debut
CD in April 2004. It became gold a half year later. Global.kryner is well-known for
arranging cover-versions of Anglo-American Pop and Jazz-songs in the style of Alpine folk
music (played with traditional instruments (trumpet, clarinet, accordion, guitar and

| Global.Kryner’s ‘Cosmopolitan
Karawanken beat’: an international style that draws on “the music of Oberkrainer” “Their musical approach is going down really well at jazz festivals and in the folk music scene. They’ve done well to hit upon such an idea.” So said the Suddeutsche Newspaper in August 2004 just after Global.Kryner had introduced themselves by playing a midnight gig at the Munich Lustspielhaus before a curious audience of a just 100 people. The months leading up to that performance had been an incredible time for a band made up of five men, one lady, and a total dedication to what Richard Schubert described as ‘Cosmopolitan Karawanken beat’. Out of nowhere, their first CD – released in April 2004 – made it into the top 40 of the Austrian charts. Various radio stations (such as Bayern 1, Bayern 4 Classic, FM4, O"3, O"1, Radio ‘Multikulti’ in Berlin, and the mainstream station Radio One) were all introducing the public to this crazy band from Vienna. After their appearance at the Tollwood Festival in December 2004, a journalist from TZ Munich was totally amazed, saying, “Their music makes you dizzy and puts a rocket up you. These six full-blooded Austrian musicians are so unbelievably good with their infectious enthusiasm and way-out arrangements that they brought the completely sold-out Tollwood-Amadeon Tent to the boil!” Global.Kryner’s first year was a white-knuckle ride through the German and Austrian media landscape and consisted of live concerts to full houses: from ORF-Musikantenstadl to ARTE-Tracks; from ZDF-Messages of Love with Marianne & Michael to the Jazz Festival in Freiburg; from Wenn die Musi Spielt to jazz summer in Graz in front of 4.500 visitors; and from Expedition Austria to the Lent Festival in Maribor. Nobody has managed such a balancing act before. So it was only a matter of time before the renowned magazine ‘Der Spiegel’ mused at how easily the exquisite, up-tempo arrangements with accordion, clarinet, trumpet, guitar and trombone reconciled alpine swing with folk music, jazz and pop. |
From an artistic point of view,
2004 ended successfully for the Global.Kryner but 2005 continued in the same vein. After
conquering concert halls and both jazz festivals and folk music TV shows, they also won
the Austrian contest to perform at one of the biggest pop spectacle in the world today,
the Eurovision Song Contest 2005. With their unconventional, catchy Salsa-Polka-Pop tune ‘Y Asi’ (lyrics by Christof Spork and music by Edi Kohldorfer), the so-called “Underdog Group” will compete as Austrian representatives at the Eurovision Song Contest this May in Kiev. The song doesn’t use any drums and is bilingual: lyrics are in Spanish and English. So it’s with good reason that the ‘Stuttgarter Zeitung’ wrote in November 2004:”With their cross-border musicality, they have gone far beyond parody. They make music that draws on an abundance of pure sound, forging links between jazz clubs, beer tents and pop music. In their kingdom of joy, musical borders do not exist. Global Kryner are having a whale of a time, making us all giddy with their music. No-one has made music in such a wild and boisterous manner for a long time. | - Hello, dear Christof and other
members of Global.Kryner, and our congratulations for you winning Austrian national final.
How do you feel now, being selected a Eurovision singers? - It is a great feeling to have been chosen as Austria's representatives. We call ourselves "Country of Music" and indeed have lots of good musicians, especially in our band (laughs). - How did you get the idea to participate in the Austrian preselection this year? Were you invited or approached National broadcaster yourself? - We were invited by ORF, our national broadcaster. They are trying to establish a more competitive and thus more successful system of preselection than we have had in the past years. - Was anyone of you making attempts in previous years (may be in other bands) to submit entry to National preselection or it is your first Eurovision attempt? - No, not at all. Our band consists mainly of renown jazz and folk musicians, and musical comedians, who till a few months ago mainly interpreted (existing) music, which is not compatible with Eurovision regulations. Being different from a conventional pop band is what makes us interesting. - Was it difficult to win this time? Were you expecting that your song will be chosen by voters and jurymembers? - It was indeed difficult, because Alf Poier, who ended up on sixth place two years ago in Riga, was the big favourite this year. - Which song from yours you really prefer - winning one Y Asi, or maybe Dreaming? Were this songs written specially for the National selection? - We like both, but we prefer the winning song "Y Asi". I think, it is the more European song. We sing in English and in Spanish, which for Austrian musicians is an almost revolutionary thing to do. Both songs were written especially for the national selection. - How can you characterize your song ? - It's a song about a Cuban girl, immigrating to Austria and falling in love with an Austrian. It's a simple story, in fact, it's almost the story of my Cuban wife and me, but at the same time it contains quite some symbolism concerning Austrian culture and self-confidence. - And how do you call it's style? It is difficult to judge, is it charleston meets copacabana meets alpine? :) - We would call it: Salsa-Polka-Pop. - Can you describe your song presentation to those who have not watched the NF? And also the role of each member of your band in the presentation of the song? - Our singer, Sabine, a 22 year old girl and great talent, tells the story. She may be seen as the Cuban girl, but at the same time she wears a typical Austrian dress. Our trombone player executes the bass and represents the Austrian, the Cuban girl falls in love with. The other four members of the band play trumpet, clarinet, accordion and guitar and move quite a lot on the stage. - How can you judge other songs at the national preselection? Did you like any of them? - I think the general level of the Austrian preselection music was o.k. - What is your opinion about Alf Poier? Do you agree that you have beaten him on his ground - thus making more funny and entertaining presentation than he did? - Alf Poier is a very successful comedian. As a musician I don't want to judge him. His show was quite impressive. Our show was more entertaining perhaps for those who prefer music to comedy. - Are you usually following the Eurovision contest? What do you think about previous Austrian representatives? - That's quite a sad story ... - What will be your aim in the contest, are you looking for win? - On the one hand we compare it to the Olympic Games. On the other hand, our ambition to win or at least to be one of the top five grows every day. But let us start with the preselection on May 19th. - What as do you think can make your song stand different from the other competitors? This year a lot of performers went for the show songs, and how you are planning to make your song one to remember? - I think the concept as well as the music of Global.Kryner stands for itself. - Have you already heard other participating songs and what is your opinion on them? - I am sorry but I haven't heard a single one yet. - What are your preparations plans? - We have too much going on to make elaborate plans ... Lots of concerts, the new CD, a video and quite a few TV shows. - Will you be adding some changes into the arrangement? - If it is allowed to do so, maybe. We are happy with our song and the sound mix. But we always try to improve. - Will be your stage presentation at the Eurovision similar to the one you had in the National final, or it will be different? - I think it will be quite similar. - Are you planning some promotional tour? - I'm afraid not. Global.Kryner has lots of concerts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland to perform. - Have you already been thinking about the idea of preview video, or you are going to sent live performance from NF as preview? - We will produce a preview video, of course. - Let's speak on your career. You are a basicly new band on Austrian stage. Do you think you are already popular? - Our star rose ten months ago with our first CD which gained gold status a few months ago. Since then we have played lots of concerts in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland - You were concentrating first on making covers of different hits in Alpine style, will there now be more original songs in your repertoire? - Global.Kryner started with cover songs only a year ago. Y Asi and Dreaming were ourfirst original songs. But our concept is open to any language and music style. The second CD we are working on right now will have mainly the same concept as the first one. There are still lots of great songs to cover. But our long term strategy has always been to do original songs. The national preselection "forced" us to do so. And Austrians loved our first try. That was quite surprising to me. - You tried to perform in different styles, what are your favourite ones? - The concept of Global.Kryner is very clear. We play a globalized version of the "Oberkrainer sound ", which originated in northern Slovenia and was the predominant popular folk music style of the Alpes during the sixties, seventies and eighties. But we mix it with jazz, salsa, reggae, rock, pop, even classical music. The only precondition: We have to like the song and it has to fit to our groove and sound. - Can you name us your favourite world singers? - There are too many to mention them all. - Do you follow music industry of The Austria? Do you think it is close to European level? - We are getting closer. We have wonderful musicians, more than most countries can call there own, but we lack the self-confidence to do our own stuff. - And our usual question usually asked by our visitors - can you name us any singers you know coming from ex-USSR, Russia, Ukraine? - As my main field of interest has always been South America and the Carribean, I am an expert on music from there. But I also love almost any kind of folk music coming from countries east of Austria. Still I don't know much about Eastern European popular singers. I am sure my friends know some. Наша группа состоит в основном из джаз и фолк музыкантов и музыкальных комиков, которые до последнего времени исполняли ковера на чужую музыку в своем стиле, что не подходит конкурсу Евровидение. Но наверно это наше отличие от обычных поп групп и заинтересовало наших организаторов. - Было тяжело победить? Вы ожидали что вашу песню выберут жюри и телезрители? - Да, было нелегко, прежде всего из-за присутствия Альфа Пойера, который занял 6 место в конкурсе в Риге два года назад и который также был одним из фаворитов этого года. - Какая вам самим песня больше нравится - победившая Y Asi или Dreaming? Были ли эти песни написаны специально для участия в национальном отборе? - Нам нравятся обе, может быть Y Asi чуть больше. Я думаю, что это более Европейская песня по стилю. Мы поем на английском и испанском, что для австрийских музыкантов практически революционный шаг. Обе песни были написаны специально для национального отбора. - Как вы можете охарактеризовать вашу песню? - Это песня о девушке с Кубы, приехавшей в Австрию и полюбившей австрийца. Очень простая история, и кстати - это практически история моей жены кубинки и меня, но в тоже время она содержит много символичных намеков на Австрийскую культуру и уверенность в себе. - А как вы можете охарактеризовать ее стиль - это что-то типа смеси чарльстона-копакабаны и альпийской музыки? - Мы называетим это Салса-Полька-Поп. - Расскажите о вашем выступлении для тех, кто не видел его, и о роли каждого участника группы в нем? - Наша 22 летняя певица, Сабина, очень талантливая - рассказывает историю. Ее можно считать кубинской девушкой, но в тоже время она одета в народный австрийский костюм. Наш тромбонист поет бас партию и представляет того австрийца, в которого влюбилась кубинка. Остальные четыре члена группы играют на трубе, кларнете, гитаре и аккордеоне и много передвигаются по сцене. - Что вы думаете о других песнях национального отбора этого года? Вам понравились какие либо из них? - Я думаю, что общий уровень отбора в этом году был весьма высоким. -А что вы думаете о Альфе Пойере? Вы согласны с тем, что вы победили его на его же территории - то есть предоставить более смешное и завлекающее шоу? - Альф Пойер очень успешный комик. Как музыкант я бы не хотел судить о нем. Наше выступление было вероятно более интересно для тех, кто предпочитает музыку комедии. - Вы следите обычно за конкурсом песни Евровидения? Что вы думаете о предыдущих австрийских участниках? - Да, это очень печальная история выступлений... - Какова будет ваша цель на конкурсе, вы стремитесь к победе? - С одной стороны мы рассматрим конкурс с точки зрения девиза Олимпийского движения. Но с другой стороны - желание попасть минимум в пятерку растет с каждым днем. Но сначала надо преодолеть барьер полуфинала. - Что, как вы думаете может помочь тому, чтобы ваша песня запомнилась зрителям? В этом году многие конкурсанты готовят шоу выступления, чем вы хотите выделится? - Я думаю, концепцией песни, ну и самой музыкой Глобал.Кринер. - Вы уже слушали какие нибудь песни конкурсантов из других стран? - Нет, к сожалению, абсолютно ни одной из них. - Каковы ваши планы подготовки? - У нас слишком многое происходит сейчас - концерты, запись нового альбома, видео, и множество ТВ шоу. - Будете ли вы менять что-то в аранжировке? - Возможно, если это разрешено. Вообще то мы вполне довольны нашей песней и ее звучанием, но всегда стоит попытаться сделать еще лучше. - Будет ли ваше выступление на Евровидении похоже на выступление на национальном отборе, или оно будет отличаться? - Я думаю почти не будет. - Готовите ли вы какой-либо промо тур? - Боюсь что нет. У нас уже расписано много концертов в Австрии, Германии и Швейцарии. - Вы готовите видеоклип в качестве превью или пошлете запись выступления в национальном отборе? - Нет, конечно это будет новое видео. - И давайте немного поговорим о вашей карьере. Вы практически новая группа на австрийской сцене, считаете ли вы, что уже достигли популярности? - Мы начали подъем всего 10 месяцев назад, когда вышел наш первый альбом, позднее ставший золотым и с тех пор мы отыграли множество концертов в Австрии, Германии, Словении, Италии и Швейцарии. - Первоначально вы больше занимальсь исполнением коверверсий на другие песни, теперь в вашем репертуаре будет больше оригинального материала? - Мы начинали год назад с ковер версий. Y Asi и Dreaming были первыми нашими песнями. Но наша концепция подходит для песен на любом языке и любого стиля. Мы сейчас работаем над вторым альбомом и у него будет такая же концепция как и у первого. Еще же осталось много хороших вещей, которые можно перепеть. Но нашей долгосрочной стратегией конечно было исполнение собственных песен. И национальный отбор подтолкнул нас к этому. Странно, что первый блин не оказался комом. - Вы пытались играть в различных стилях, какой ваш любимый? - Концепция очень проста - это такая глобализованная версия "Oberkrainer sound" который появился в северной Словении и стал доминирующим Альпийским стилем 60-80х. Но мы смешиваем с джазом, солсой, регги, роком, попом и даже классической музыкой. Единственное условие - нам должна нравится песня и она должна соответствовать нашей манере и звучанию. - Можете ли вы назвать ваших любимых исполнителей? - Их слишком много, чтобы перечислять. - Вы следите за музыкальной индустрией Австрии? Думаете ли вы что она действительно европейского уровня? - Мы постепенно выходим на него. У нас много талантливых музыкантов, чем может похвастать далеко не каждая страна, но у нас нет особой уверенности в себе и своем творчестве. - И наш обычный вопрос - знаете ли вы кого-нибудь из исполнителей стран СНГ? - К сожалению, я прежде всего слежу за музыкой Южной Америки и Кариб. И я люблю практически любой вид фолк музыки из стран, расположенных восточнее Австрии. Но к сожалению, я не могу назвать кого-либо из вашего региона.
