 Mick Donegan from County
Cork in the south of Ireland started dancing at the age 7 in local primary school and was
taught by Michael Ryan. He was inspired by a fellow class mates’ appearance on TV. His
mother also had some experience in dancing and was helping Mick to correct his faults. He
took part in first championship in the age of 10 and continued his competitive career
(taking part in many national and international events) until I was 16 when he turned full
time pro. However Mick's biggest love was performing. He made stage debut aged 11 in a show called The Booley House, in Ballyduff, Co. Waterford. He performed with this show every summer until became old enough to join The Comhaltas groupe Bru Boru based in Cashel. He did two summers with this show. Age 16 Mick auditioned for Riverdance and ended up touring with their british tour and also doing some promo work in Europe, and was offered a full time contract. At the age of 18 he becames the youngest to perform the male lead in Riverdance show. Later Mick joins a show called Dancing on Dangerous Ground. After that he joined show called Ragus. The next show was called Magic of the Dance, with which he toured Europe for about 7 months. Later he jouns German show called Dancing Feet, where he choreographed Irish dancing section. Mick also worked on the project called Celtic Legends. He part-choreographed as well as danced one of the lead parts in this show. Currently Mick dances with The Celtic Feet Dance Company and tours with Ragus. Mick is also a series regular teacher on the hit RTE' TV show Celebrity Jigs ‘n’ Reels in Ireland. He will be also be entering the Guiness Book of World Records next year after attaining 7 heel clicks in a single jump. When not dancing Mick studies engineering in University College Dublin. |

 At four years old Nicola
Byrne began Irish dancing with the O’Shea School of Irish Dancing. “I never thought it
would be a career, I just did it as a hobby. We took part in international festivals but I
just never thought about it as a career until Riverdance opened up the world of Irish
dancing,” she said.She has been dancing competitively for 18 years, winning 1st place in all major competitions including the World Championships, the All Ireland Championships and the North American Championships. Nicola joined the Riverdance Flying Squad in 1999 to do promotional gigs while still studying in college. Then in the summer of 2006 she joined the dance troupe for its run in the Gaiety and travelled on its Asian tour before Christmas. “I was asked to train in for the lead role” she said. “It is more physically demanding and there is more pressure, but it is most dancers dream to be a lead, so I was delighted, when asked". Nicola’s dancing career has taken her around the world performing at folk festivals and events in England, Holland, Austria, Germany, France, Monaco, Hungary, Norway and North America. She has also performed live on numerous television programmes in Ireland and abroad. She also runs her own dance school in her native city of Dublin. Besides that Nicola was teaching celebrities Irish dancing as part of the reality television show. “It was really challenging but so much fun as well, especially in the initial few weeks as we were teaching from scratch someone who has never danced before. To see someone improve each week was great,” she said. Nicola thinks that the reality show appeared to have sparked a renewed interest in Irish dancing among children. “I think there has been a lot of interest in it after that,” she said. “My friend is a teacher, and the children in school they all loved it and wanted to take dancing classes.” Info: irishexaminer.com |

last few weeks practising their jives and sewing on their sequins, and now Celebrity Jigs
'N' Reels stars Nicola Byrne and Mick Donegan want to bring back the first-ever Eurovision
Dance title to Ireland. The couple have been frantically practising since they were chosen
to represent their country in this ground-breaking competition, reports Daily Mirror. Mick, 26, from Mitchelstown, Cork, said: "Ireland lost out in the song contest so the pressure is on for us to perform on Saturday night as the very first people to represent our country. We are looking forward to the competition as it is very exciting to be breaking new ground for our country." Both he and Nicola have been Irish dancing since they were children but for the competition they have had to learn new skills. "There are two dances involved - a ballroom and Latin dance and then the traditional dance for the country. So for our first dance we've chosen the jive and that is completely new to both of us. We have been working really hard on that all summer because it's a whole different style with different foot placing and different posture. The most difficult part of it is keeping your back loose and having your hands flying everywhere as Irish dancing is a lot more formal. We have to be careful not to flick into Irish dancing when we are doing the jive and vice versa - that's been the hardest bit." And they said the hectic rehearsing schedule has played havoc with their love lives. Mick reveals: "I have had to do a lot of apologising to my girlfriend Briege Craven for the last few weeks. She hasn't seen very much of me but she's a dancer as well and has been away with Riverdance all summer so she understands." And Nicola Byrne said her boyfriend of seven years Kevin Kelly has hardly seen her either. She said: "Kevin's really supportive but I have been dancing non-stop since Jigs 'N' Reels. Mick and I have been rehearsing four to five hours every day and then up until Saturday I was doing Riverdance in The Gaiety as well. I'd love a week off just to put my feet up at this stage. I'm really excited about the competition - I'm a bit nervous but a few nerves are always good." Nicola and Mick will be wearing specially-designed costumes on Saturday night but they have to keep their outfits a closely guarded secret. Nicola said: "They look fantastic - I can't wait to wear them on the night. And because we are used to dancing in front of cameras thanks to Jigs 'N' Reels, we're hoping that experience will give us a bit of a head start. The Irish entry has came from RTE's dance show, Celebrity
Jigs and Reels, which finished it's run on the 20th of May. Five teams from the show's
professional dancers have compete for selection for the contest and jury selected the
winning couple. Mick Donegan and Nicola Byrne set to represent Ireland in the final in London on 1 September. Couple, wearing traditional Irish costumes came up with an intriguing three minute routine combining ballroom dancing with Irish dancing which was performed to southern European folk music, and managed to impress the judges: Jane Gilheaney, director of the Shaylyn Dance Company in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim; David Bolger, artistic director of Coisce'im Dance Theatre, Dublin and representing RTE and Julian Vignoles, Assistant Commissioning Editor, Entertainment. Celebrity version of the show was won by Gavin O'Fearraigh and professional dance partner Dearbhla Lennon. Other participating pairs in Eurovision preselection were Susan Ginnety & Ronan McCormack, Colin Ryan & Paula Goulding, Damien Noone & Rachel Byrne, and Glenn Simpson & Dearbhla Lennon, all of them professional Irish dancers, former or present Riverdance members. The winning couple, Mick & Nicola, will then, over the next three months, prepare their performances, in Irish dance and ballroom, for the competition. RTE' will engage a choreographer, TV professional and costume specialist to assist them. Marty Whelan will be commentator for Irish TV.  In 1st edition of
the show couple Killian O'Sullivan and Nicola Byrne were winners of the show, while Emma
O'Driscoll and Mick Donegan finished 6th. In 2nd edition of the show couple Peter Corry
and Nicola Byrne finished 3rd, while Grania Willis and Mick Donegan were eliminated in
early stage of competition. Mick Donegan is former Riverdance member and currently working
in shows Dancing Feet and Celtic Legends, while Nicola has just joined Riverdance. |
