Bio

Bilal Hassani, born on September 9, 1999 in Paris is a French singer and songwriter and video maker who made himself known through his videos and music on his YouTube channel. He is of Moroccan origin and his father lives in Singapore.

"My musical world is quite eclectic, I grew up with great singers, which my parents listened, like Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, Prince... Then, I forged my own tastes with the R'n 'B of the 1990s which obsessed me all my childhood. Among the contemporary artists, what I listen to goes from Aya Nakamura to Shawn Mendes via Ariana Grande".

Bilal started singing at the age of 5 in front of his family and later began taking singing lessons. In 2015 invited by his friend Nemo Schiffman, finalist of the first season, Bilal Hassani participates in the second season of The Voice Kids. He joined the team of Patrick Fiori, the French participant in Eurovision in 1993. At the show he has performed Rise Like a Phoenix (Conchita Wurst) and Love Is All (Roger Glover) before being eliminated in the battles.

After The Voice Kids, on November 2015, he creates his YouTube channel which is about to reach 800 000 followers. On the he publishes the colorful chronicles of his daily life, but also cover version, including "Djadja" by Aya Nakamura and "Made for now" by Janet Jackson, who have received the strongest approvals of the original singers. His solo releases include Wanna Be (2016), Follow Me, House Down (2017), Shadows, Heaven with You (2018).

It's thanks to another TV Talent show "Together, tous avec moi", the French version of "All Together Now" to be broadcast on M6, that Bilal meets Madame Monsieur, the French representatives at Eurovision 2018, who were part of the jury. The French duo helps him to get signed with Low Wood Records and, writing him song "Roi".

"In creation of my image I followed the footsteps of icons of my childhood like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Prince. I also loved Beyoncé. I was very fond of Disney princesses, especially Pocahontas. Her hyper-long hair fascinated me, I seriously wanted to have the same. Now I have long hair most of the time thanks to a wig. I try to be as sunny as possible, to always be very positive".

On June 23, 2017, on the eve of the Gay Pride in Paris, Hassani came out as homosexual. In 2018 Têtu magazine included Hassani in "30 most influential French LGBT+", describing him as "an icon for French LGBT+ youth". Although he was chosen as France's Eurovision contestant by popular vote, he has faced an intense public backlash. Right-wing senator Henri Leroy demanded his removal from the competition on the basis of a YouTube video in which Hassani, by Leroy's estimation, "trivialized" recent terrorist attacks in France. Hassani said the video had been taken out of context and was designed to celebrate France's 2018 World Cup victory. Further outrage erupted over two posts from Hassani's Twitter account in 2014. One appeared to defend comedian and convicted anti-Semite Dieudonné M'bala M'bala. The other accused Israel of "crimes against humanity" in the Gaza Strip. Again, Hassani went on the defensive, noting he was 14 at the time and suggesting that people he shared his password with might have sent those tweets.

But what has been especially striking, in a country that prides itself on indifference to sexual preference, is the number of homophobic attacks Hassani has endured since his nomination. He has been ridiculed by a prominent French television presenter, and his Twitter feed has regularly featured cyberstalking, racist and homophobic attacks, threats of physical violence, including death threats. The associations Urgence Homophobie and Stop Homophobie joined forces to bring to justice every person who has insulted, discriminated against or threatened Bilal Hassani on social networks.

"Since I started to share moments of my life on the Internet, there are always people who do not like what I do and who can say things very, very, very bad. It started when I changed my look. Most of the time my environment takes care of me and makes sure I do not pay too much attention to these things. I have applications that filter most of these comments, so I see almost nothing. This will not taint this crazy experience that I'm about to live, I will not dwell on the trolls of the Internet. But it's always sad, as a human being, when you feel that people don't like you for some reason. It's like: ‘Come on, guys. Leave me alone.' I represent a France that's this new generation, I feel, that's more outspoken, that's more open to anything. People need to remember that Eurovision is a show that's about music and about cultures gathering up and living through music a moment thats magical."

"I'm a huge Eurovision fan, I watch the contest every year since I was 9, and it was my dream since I was a kid to be part of it, so that I could wave the flag and the colours of my country in the biggest music show in the world. The song "Roi" is very pop, it's a mid tempo ballad with actual sonorities but also R'n'B influences. This track is close to me, faithful to my musical tastes since my childhood. It was born from a sample that Jean-Karl played on the piano. It inspired me to a melody, then a message, about self-acceptance. Emilie helped me with the lyrics. We did this song very quickly, in six or seven hours. But it was not originally meant for the Eurovision. "

Hassani's debut album, "Kingdom", will be released on 26 April 2019.

Stéphane Bern & André Manoukian will be commentators of Grande Finale on 18 May on France 2, André Manoukian & Sandy Héribert will work on semi-finals on France 4.

In addition he thanked the elderly members of the LGBT community for “the work you did for my generation".

Last week, Israeli public broadcaster KAN confirmed that it will be going ahead as scheduled with its planned satirical comedy miniseries – about an ISIS plot to attack the Eurovision – despite purported complaints. "We're planning to air the show, it has long been planned to be part of our Eurovision programming," the spokeswoman said. "The French delegation didn't say anything to us about it – but the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said it had heard that they were concerned." Though the EBU has asked KAN to meet and discuss the future of the project, a spokeswoman for the Israeli public broadcaster made it clear on that it has no intention of changing anything.

Douze Points is currently slated to air in three parts on KAN 11 at some point in May, the same month that the Eurovision will be held in Tel Aviv. KAN said that an exact air date for the show has not been set, and it is still in production.

20/02: France TV threatens to withdraw in protest against comedy series about French entrant
15/02: Official music video released

The singer of Moroccan origin from France, Bilal Hassani, who will represent his country at the Eurovision 2019, admitted being a fan of the Russian entrant Sergey Lazarev.

"Of course, I know Sergey by his performance in 2016. I admired the performance back then, and I am glad to have the opportunity to talk. I am a very big fan, I liked you very much in 2016," Hassani said via the live video link in the program "Privet, Andrey" on the TV channel "Russia 1" (his words in the article have been backtranslated from Russian).

Sergey Lazarev thanked the French artist and noted that they will see each other in Tel Aviv. "We wish you good luck, and the best wish is to perform your song three times!", said manager of the Russian act Philipp Kirkorov. "As much as you can", added Lazarev.

Hassani informed that the entry Roi ("King") for the contest he wrote in collaboration with the duo Madame Monsieur, which represented France at the Eurovision last year and took 13th place. "We together wrote this song," - he said.

The singer was asked if he feels the responsibility, representing France in a difficult period for the country due to the protests of the "Yellow vests." "I don't think about pressure and political context, I don't think that Eurovision is about politics. No, this is the union of all countries that sing together in one voice. And they express together the fact that they are having good time together and they experience amazing, special moment. I therefore have to share music and love, happiness through music and my song, and this is what I'm waiting for, "said 19-year-old Hassani.

The singer noted that he had not been to Russia yet and received an invitation from Philip Kirkorov to become his guest. The host also told Hassani about two dogs that Sergey Lazarev adopted from the shelter. "I really want a dog now. If I have the opportunity, I would gladly take it from your shelter," said the French singer. "Do you want me to bring one to you to Tel Aviv?", asked Philipp Kirkorov. In exchange he asked Bilal to bring him a souvenir with Eiffel Tower.

Preselection

On 21 June France Télévisions has opened applications for the national selection process, Destination Eurovision 2019. Deadline to submit entries has been set on 30 November. Complete regulations are available here. National final is organized again by FranceTV in collaboration with ITV Studios France.

"It is an original creation that we wrote and developed with France 2. We want to make it rise in power and the main move is to the completely live broadcasts. This will allow the public to invest more in the show. And the goal of "Destination Eurovision" is to help publicize the song and create a positive dynamic for Eurovision in its French broadcast. The result is very positive," says Matthieu Grelier of ITV Studios France.

Submitted entries should follow main Eurovision rules and not be made commercially available prior to the competition. Singers should be at least 16 years of age on January 1, 2019. No nationality restrictions are enforced, but performers should have the legal authorization to be in France for the shooting of the programs. Composers also can either be national or international, but must be registered with SACEM or any other equivalent collective society. Applications can be submitted via the FranceTV website. Submissions should include contact details, Photo/Biography and video links for performers. FranceTV reserve the right to select any future candidates to the competition by any other means outside the public call, directly and indirectly.

Over 1500 songs have been considered for the preselection. First selection committee has shortlisted 60 of them, and second has chosen 18 acts to compete in the show. Preselection committe involved both new head of the delegation Steven Clerima and ex-HoD Bruno Berberes, among others.

Garou remains host of French national preselection show however two of the jury members are replaced. Instead Amir and Isabelle Boulay joining Christophe Willem will be André Manoukian - French songwriter, arranger, jazz musician, and actor who is one the judges in the French version of Pop Idol, Nouvelle Star who already commented with Willem on France 4 the semifinals of ESC 2018 - and singer Vitaa, who was co-writer of Mamma Mia by Louka in the season one, has more than million albums sold in her 10 years career and is most broadcast French female singer on radio in 2018.

This year, however, the jury will analyze and share their feelings about the entries in the running but will not vote. Their comments will guide viewers who will be able to vote from the start of the preselection. This time, all Destination Eurovision shows will be broadcast live, so public will be able to vote during semifinals as well. Their votes will count equally with those of the international jury. As last year, shows will also be aired on TV5Monde and TV5 Québec Canada

Presentation of the second season of French selection show Destination Eurovision was held on 6 December by France Televisions and ITV Studio France. In each semifinal of the preselection will perform 9 artists, of which 4 will qualify to the final. With the public, the entries will be evaluated by an international jury of 5 different members in each semifinal and of 10 in the final (so in total, 20 countries will be involved). 1 min extracts of all the songs were released on December 20. First semifinal will go on air on 12 January, 21:00 CET. You can read detailed introduction of competing acts at ESCXtra.

The final of Destination Eurovision 2019 was the third most viewed show on Saturday evening, with 2.14 million people (11.7% share) watching the show live on France 2.

On 4 October, it was announced that Steven Clerima will take over as the new Head of Delegation for France. Steven Clerima has worked in the Entertainment and Music department of France 2 for a number of years as the Program Advisor. Clerima was Edoardo Grassi's assistant in the last three years.

Rise Like a Phoenix (Conchita Wurst) и Love Is All (Roger Glover),

Wanna Be (2016), Follow Me, House Down (2017), Shadows, Heaven with You (2018).

ITV Studios France.

ITV Studios France.

TV5 Québec Canada
