Paolo Meneguzzi, 31 year old singer, guitarist and songwriter from Tessin will represent Switzerland at Eurovision Song Contest 2008. Singer has been selected by jury, made of representatives of Swiss channels SF, TSR, TSI, VIVA Switzerland and radio DRS. He will perform song "Era stupendo", which is described as a romantic ballad with dance elements in the style of 70s. Song will be presented for the first time at Swiss TV on 12th of January, during the broadcast of Swiss national music awards. In 1996, Paolo Meneguzzi has won his first big title: Vina del Mar International Song Festival in Chile with the song "Aria, Ario". Next year he releases debut album "Por Amor", which is followed by "Paolo" in 1998. This brings him fame in South America, but at that time he still was unknown artist in Europe. He debuts at San Remo Festival in 2001 in the young artists section with "Ed io non ci sto piu" finishing 7th. Same year he releases album "Un sogno nelle mani" which was also released in Spanish version as "Un sueno entre las manos". His next album, released in 2003 "Lei e" receives "Golden disc" award. He is back in San Remo in 2004 with "Guardami Negli Occhi (Prego)" finishing 4th and releases re-edition of "Lei e", which now gets "Platinum" and promotes it with tour both in Italy and Switzerland. In 2005 he takes part in San Remo with "Non Capiva Che L'Amavo" and releases album "Favola" which in two weeks receives "Platinum disc", selling more than 200.000 copies. After another successful tour he starts working on the new album. As in previous years, first single from the new album is taking part in San Remo, this time Paolo finishes 6th with "Musica" and right after it same titled album is released. New tour is attended by 250.000 people and live album has been released. With it he makes his total of "Platinum" awards to 7. In late February 2008 Paolo will again take part in San Remo with his new song "Grande". Despite Paolo is considerably popular in Italy and Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, he still is almost unknown in the other parts of the country. Thus Swiss press after last year participation of international star DJ Bobo already called new Eurovision representative "No Name". После очередного успешного тура Паоло приступает к работе над новым альбомом. Первый сингл с него вновь подается на Сан-Ремо и в этот раз с композицией "Musica" Паоло занимает 7е место. За этим следует выход альбома с таким же названием. На концерты его нового тура приходят 250 000 человек, выпускается концертный альбом. Количество "платиновых" дисков в карьере певца достигает 7. В конце февраля 2008 года Паоло вновь примет участие в фестивале Сан-Ремо и исполнит там песню "Grande". Несмотря на свою значительную известность в Италии и итало-говорящей части Швейцарии, в других частях страны его имя практически неизвестно, и после участия в прошлом конкурсе всемирно известного DJ Bobo, Швейцарская пресса уже окрестила нового представителя на Евровидении "No Name".
Different tabloid papers in Sweden and Switzerland, supported by some websites have launched campaign to prove that song "Era Stupendo", set to be representing Switzerland in Eurovision 2008 performed by Paolo Meneguzzi, is in fact plagiarism of the song "It can only get better" performed by 15 years old Amy Diamond from Sweden. Father and manager of Swedish singer Lee Deasismont has stated "The songs are very much alike. All the best in the Swiss song has been taken from "It can only get better". Composer of the Swedish song Tommy Tysper added: "We are going to listen to the songs carefully and decide which measures we can take". Swiss papers approached Paolo, who noticed "I do not know this Swedish singer, so I had to look on the video from Youtube. Well, even if there may be some similarities between the songs - I didn't steal it from her! Actually I also noticed that parts of Amy's song are very similar to song of Avril Lavigne "When You're Gone!" Representative of Swiss broadcaster SF told: "In certain places there can be heard some vague similarities - however in general the two songs are different." It also appeared that though Paolo himself wrote "Era Stupendo" arrangement for it was done by Swedish Erik Lidbom, who also produced Meneguzzi's album "Musica". "Erik is only responsible for production, while I myself composed all songs for the album. I tryst him", rejects Meneguzzi. Expert Poto Wegener from Swiss socitety for copyrights of music works judged the following "Yes, the beginning of the verse, as well as parts of refrain are very simillar. Currently, we do not believe there are enough grounds for disqualification, however if author of Swedish entry will issue official complaint the matter will be decided by EBU comission after Swiss entry will be oficially submitted to the contest. Отец и менеджер шведской певицы Ли Дезисмонд заявил: "Песни очень похожи. Все лучшее, что есть в швейцарской песне было позаимствовано из "It can only get better". Композитор шведской песни Томми Тиспер добавил: "Мы планируем тщательно проанализировать песни и решить, какие шаги мы можем предпринять". Швейцарская пресса обратилась к Паоло, который отметил: "Я не знаю этой шведской певицы, поэтому мне пришлось посмотреть на видео на Youtube. Ну, даже если между этими песнями и есть некоторая похожесть - я песни у нее точно не воровал! Тем более, что мне кажется, что песня Эми частями очень похожа на песню Аврил Лавинь "When you're gone!". Представитель швейцарской телекомпании отметил: "В определенных местах есть некоторая размытая похожесть - но если брать целиком - песни абсолютно разные". Оказалось также, что хотя Паоло и является сам автором своей композиции - аранжировку на нее делал швед Эрик Лидбом, который также продюсировал и прошлый альбом Менегуцци "Musica". "Эрик только отвечает за продакшн, я сам написал все песни в альбоме. Ему я полностью доверяю", отверг предположения Менегуцци. Экспер Пото Вегенер из Швейцарского общества по охране авторских прав на музыкальные произведения сделал следующий вывод: "Да, начало куплетов и части припева достаточно похожи. Однако похожесть не означает плагиат, два человека в разное время в разном месте вполне могли написать похожую музыку, это не такая уж и редкость". Однако, если автор шведской песни подаст официальную жалобу - дело будет рассмотрено комиссией ЕВС после того, как будет официально получена заявка со швейцарской песней.

Switzerland has announced the launch of the selection procedure. There are no rules changes compared to previous years. Thus only artist who have released chartting CD and at least 1 professional videoclip are invited to take part with no citizenship restriction. 22 October is the deadline to submit entries. По сравнению с прошлыми годами правила не претерпели никаких изменений, таким образом заявки принимаются от опытных исполнителей, чьи альбомы находились в топ чартах, а также выпускавшие как минимум один профессиональный видеоклип.
