189 songs had been received by the Maltasong Committee by the official closing date of November 7 2003. The total is down slightly on recent years where the number has been more in the region of around 240. The new chairperson of the Maltasong Committee from 2004 will be Grace Borg.
For 2004, the organisers decided to open up the contest and allow foreign songwriters and composers to join the process which will select the Maltese song for the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest. All singers must be Maltese but backing vocalists and dancers can be of any nationality.
One other major change to the rules is that any performer will only be allowed to sing one of the shortlisted songs, avoiding the situations in recent years where the same singer could be singing a number of songs in the final, sometimes diluting support for individual songs between fans of the singer. Famous Maltese songwriter Ray Agius has withdrawn his songs from the contest in protest at this rule.
The sixteen songs that will compete in the 2004 Song For Europe contest to win chance of representing Malta at the Eurovision Song Contest have been selected. Thirty six songs were performed live for a jury behind closed doors on December 18th. As a result, sixteen songs have been named as the ones which will go forward to the public vote in the 2004 contest. Lyrics of all participating songs can be found at www.maltasong.com

Final will be held on February 14th.

The young couple duo Julie and Ludwig are a vocal pleasure, their compatibility is impeccable. Their voices hit notes that few singers are capable of, and this year they are singing the song "On Again -Off Again" written specifically for them to emphasis the duo's great talent by composer Philip Vella and lyricist Gerard James Borg.
The young couple Julie and Ludwig will represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Festival 2004, after winning the Malta Song for Europe Festival held in Malta at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of February 2004. Julie and Ludwig placed first, they won with an extraordinary number of public votes, televoting result for this duo was more than double the number of votes the song that placed second got.
Julie and Ludwig have been singing as a duo for the past three years. They have participated and won various festivals namely:
· Malta Song for Europe Festival 2004: 1st place
· L-Ghanja tal-Poplu 2003: 1st place
· Discovery Festival Bulgaria 2003: 1st place / 2nd Best Singers
· Malta Song for Europe Festival 2003: 4th place
· Festival Internazzjonali tal-Kanzunetta Maltija 2002: 2nd place / 1st place public vote
Both singers are very well prepared, and have always put their musical career first. At the age of six Ludwig started playing the piano. His singing career started as a choirboy with St. John's Cathedral Choir under the tuition of Fr. Albert Borg OSA. Then Maestro Joe Brown, noticing his talent asked him to play the solo part in the musical Queen of Hearts.
This introduced him to the world of musicals and he has since then participated in various musicals namely, Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Weber, The Ragged Child, Young And Powerful, Some Enchanted Evening, All you need is Love, Beatle Mania, The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Christmas With The Musicals, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Beauty and the Beast were he played Gaston, Music Of The Night and Jesus Christ Superstar were he played Annas.
When only four years old Julie started singing with a local church choir. She began studying the piano and later on lyric singing. When only twelve, Julie participated in a local festival. She was immediately, noted by local composers and she never had difficulty finding their support. Her participation in local festivals has given her the confidence to take on whatever musical challenge comes her way.
She has taken part as a soloist in many musicals such as Tkun Darbohra Mikelang, Diana Queen of Hearts, Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Weber Delicately powerful, The Ragged Child, Some Enchanted Evening, All you need is Love, Beatle Mania, The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Christmas With The Musicals, Music of The Night and Jesus Christ Superstar. It was during one of these musical performance that the couple meet and decided to form a duo.
Both Julie and Ludwig are graduates from the university of Malta. Julie holds a degree in sociology BA (Hons). Ludwig is graduated in education and teaches P. S. D. He also teaches voice training at the Masquerade Theatre Company. They are both still studying lyric singing.
Currently Julie and Ludwig are the resident singers in the popular Saturday afternoon programme "Is-Sibt". They are looking forward to bringing Malta in the top ten placing, once again, and possible be at the peak of the ten, in the Eurovision Song Festival.

Ludwig, son of Austin and Sylvana Galea, was born on the 26th November 1977 and has a younger sister Abigail of whom he is very fond.
In the year 2000 he obtained a B.Ed. (Hons.) Degree in Education from the University in Malta and is currently teaching P.S.D. at Paola Primary School and San Gwann Primary B.
However, music has always been the center of Ludwig's life. Being brought up in a musical environment, it is of no wonder that he started showing interest in music at a very early stage. In actual fact, he started taking piano lessons under the tuition of his adorable uncle Mro. Alberto Borg OSA at the age of six. Finding potential in his nephew, his uncle being at the time Maestro di Cappella, encouraged him to join the St. John's Cathedral Boy's Choir. Ludwig's singing career actually started from there. Eventually, Mro. Joe Brown gave him the first opportunity to be a soloist musical performer in 'Diana - Queen of hearts'. This wonderful experience led Ludwig to take up lyric singing more seriously and since then he has never looked back. Obtaining experience from the best directors (Anthony Bezzina, Alison McKenna, Ray Mangion, Hector Bruno, Johanna Casabene, etc.) in Malta helped him to become one of the best musical male singers on the island.
He performed in many musicals which include:
1999 Diana - Queen of hearts Leading role
Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Webber Singing highlights from 'Sunset Boulevard'
2000 The Ragged Child Leading Role: Lonigin

Like wine, Ludwig's voice matured and improved along the years and eventually started participating even in local festivals. His first appearance was in the year 2000 at the 'Festival ghaz-zghazagh 2000' (engl.: 'Festival for youths') wherein he placed third with a song which he himself composed called 'All you ever need'.
Two years later he participated in another prestigious festival on the island called 'Festival Internazzjonali tal-kanzunetta Maltija 2002' (engl.: 'International Festival of Maltese Songs') along with Julie Zahra, where they emerged as a superb duo together. As a matter of fact, they placed second and won the televoting award with the song 'Adagio' (Music by Rene Mamo, Lyrics by Raymond Mahoney).
However up to now 2003 was certainly one of the best years for this marvellous couple Julie & Ludwig. In the 'Malta Song for Europe 2003' they placed second in televoting and fourth overall with their song 'My Number One' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia). Then in 'L-Ghanja tal-poplu 2003' they won first price and the best interpretation award with the song 'Sebat Ilwien' (engl.: 'Seven Colors') (Music by Mro. Dominic Galea, Lyrics by Mario Fenech Caruana). This led them to go offshore.
Their first experience to go abroad was in Bulgaria. There they participated in the 'Discovery Festival 2003' and apart from being awarded second price out of 24 countries as best singers, they also won the first price with the song 'Endlessly' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia). Some months later, thanks to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julie & Ludwig were then invited to sing in Brussels at the open day for those countries joining the EU.
On the 14th February 2004 Julie & Ludwig won the Malta Song For Europe competition with their song 'On Again ... Off Again' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Gerard James Borg) and will represent Malta in the 2004 Eurovision Song Contest held in Istanbul, Turkey.
Apart from singing, Ludwig has also a passion for teaching. Ludwig adores children and thus, when offered the opportunity to teach voice training at the Masquerade Theater School, he accepted heartily because there he could combine singing with his love for children.
Ludwig's talents let him to be invited on the best local TV shows to sing. And eventually even to present TV Shows himself including:
Kraxx Children's Program
Mini and Minor Children's Program
Baraxx Youth Program (nominated for best light programme)
Raxx Youth Program
Klubzone Youth Program
D-Generation Youth Program
His appearance on TV made him even more popular and his circle of friends continued to grow and grow. Ludwig's big thanks go first and foremost to God Almighty, to his belated grandfather Romeo, his family, Julie and last but not least his loyal and loveable fans.

Julie, daughter of Anthony and Monica (belated) Zahra, born on the 25th March 1982, is the youngest offspring after May and Andrew.
In the year 2003 Julie obtained a B.A. (Hons.) Degree in Sociology from the University of Malta.
Coming from a family of musicians, Julie naturally started taking interest in Music at a very tender age. Her potential and talent in Music could easily be detected and so at the age of four she joined the local church choir and even started piano lessons. As she grew older, she took up lyric singing more seriously and managed to obtain foreign distinction certificates. All this was the beginning of a prosperous career.
At present Julie is mostly occupied with the participation in various festivals. Her passion however remains musical theater, which marked the start of her career and prompts her to teach voice training at the Masquerade Theater School. Obtaining experience from the best directors (Anthony Bezzina, Alison McKenna, Ray Mangion, Hector Bruno, Johanna Casabene, etc.) in Malta helped her to become one of the best musical female singers on the island.
Julie performed in many musicals including:
1999 Diana - Queen of hearts Leading role
Dedication to Andrew Lloyd Webber Singing highlights from 'Sunset Boulevard' and 'Whistle down the wind'
2000 Tkun Darb'ohra Mikelang Secondary role
The Ragged Child Secondary role
2001 Some Enchanted Evening Singing highlights from 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Aspects of Love', 'Les Miserables', 'My Fair Lady', 'Song And Dance', 'Miss Saigon'

Delicately Powerfull Leading Role
2002 All You Need Is Love Singing highlights from 'The Beatles'
Delicately Powerfull Leading Role

007 - The Bond Show Singing 'Goldfinger', 'The Man with the Golden Gun' and 'Tomorrow never dies'

Eventually Julie started experiencing even the festival scene. In actual fact, during these past years she has participated in various festivals in Malta. She is surely very much remembered for the songs 'Hdejk' (Music by Rene Mamo, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia) and 'Eternity' (Music by Rene Mamo, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia) wherein she appeared as a soloist.
It was not until the 'Festival Internazzjonali tal-kanzunetta Maltija 2002' (engl.: 'International Festival of Maltese Songs') that Julie found her singing partner Ludwig Galea. In this second most prestigious festival on the Island they placed second and won the televoting award with the song 'Adagio' (Music by Rene Mamo, Lyrics by Raymond Mahoney)
Then in 2003 Julie and Ludwig sang together again for the 'Malta Song for Europe' placing second in televoting and fourth overall with the song 'My Number One' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia).
Later that year they also won the first prize and the best interpretation award with the song 'Sebat Ilwien' (engl.: Seven Colors) (Music by Mro. Domnic Galea, Lyrics by Mario Fenech Caruana) at the festival 'L-Ghanja tal poplu 2003'.
This led them to travel abroad and participate in another festival called 'Discovery Festival 2003' in Bulgaria. Out of 24 countries they won one first prixe with the song 'Endlessly' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Joe Julian Farrugia) and achieved second prize in the category for Best Singers.
More recently, thanks to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julie and Ludwig were also invited to sing in Brussels at the Open Day for those prospective countries joining the EU (European Union).
Due to all these successes, Julie has very often been invited on the best local TV Shows. Currently she is also a resident singer on one of the most popular shows on the Island. Recently her song 'Eternity' has also been recorded in Maltese for the opening of a local tele series. Besides this she has also been asked to sing the title track 'It-tfal jigu bil-vapuri' (Music by Philip Vella, Lyrics by Oliver Friggieri) for another tele series holding the same title.
For another TV programme about the Maltese Immigrants in the U.S.A. Julie, together with Ludwig, has also sang the song 'Holma Amerikana'. A video for this song showing Julie and Ludwig was recorded and is also being featured in America among the Maltese Communities.
Having achieved so much, Julie would like to thank first and foremost her dad for all his support and dedication and last but not least all loyal and loveable fans.

ON AGAIN ... OFF AGAIN

Composer : Philip Vella
Author : Gerard James Borg

Lyrics

Look at me – I need some attention
I’m a girl – of serious intention
Just like a butterfly
My wings can take me high
To touch your piece of sky
Though I can fly away
Play cool, or run away
I choose to hold your love
More than one night!

You’re everything and nothing in one
(What do you mean?)
Our love goes from the North to the South
(I disagree)
I just can’t understand anymore
What we have in common

(Chorus)
On again - Off again
Like the rhythm of rain
We need to decide
Find an end to this game
Such wonderful times
Many natural highs
Love is a flame that we can never tame
On again – Off again
Why… oh why! Can’t I live without you?
How… oh how! Do I reach inside you?
My love is justified
I simply had enough
I want you by my side
Am I your fantasy?
Mystery? Or destiny?
Do you take me for a ride?
Please, tell me now!

You’re the air, you’re the love that I breathe
(That sounds so good)
You’re the magic that flows from within
(I feel that too)
We come close then we move far away
Can’t we stay together?

(Chorus)

There’s a river between us
And I need you to come across
Reach out for my heart
Keep this feeling so alive
Love grows – We survive

(chorus)
On again - Off again
Like the rhythm of rain
We need to decide
Find an end to this game
Such wonderful times
Many natural highs
Love is a flame that we can never tame
On again – Off again

(chorus)
Off again – On again
Like a flickering flame
That dies in the wind
And lights up again
Such wonderful times
Many natural highs
Love is a flame we can never tame
On again – Off again !
